This is the difference between a regular person who lies occasionally in certain situations (everyone does or has) and usually for specific reasons, and someone who is a compulsive/pathological liar. Pathological liars lie about everything and without needing any impetus to do so. They lie about big things, they lie about small things, they lie when they feel they need to, they lie when there's absolutely no reason to do so. Like saying "Where was I earlier? I went to the dry cleaners", when they actually went to the grocery store...and the person they're telling that to couldn't care less one way or the other where they were so there's zero reason to lie about it.
