i'm sure republicans everywhere would be just as silent if President Clinton did the same for her daughter Chelsea

I wonder how it works for spouses.  If I was POTUS, I'd want to confide in my wife about a lot of things, partly to get an outside take on things and partly just to vent.

I think all Presidents talk to their spouse about classified material and it's perfectly fine. Now if you try to grant their spouse a security clearance it would rightfully cause a **** storm. You're just giving this most likely unqualified person unfettered access to our secrets. Will they end up freelancing like Jared and give up secrets to foreign autocrats?

I had a bunch of regulars who are always good to me yesterday, so I told our hostess to seat the other servers and skip me a couple rounds.

Gotta keep it fair.

This isn't about politics any more...it's only tribalism. Hell it probably always was, it's just that now it's so bloody obvious that they have rejected every conservative principle.

Just want to point out that this too is not a both sides issue.

Look at Franken. The Dems eat their own. They are quick to the trigger, to condemn and disapprove of their worst actors. I think Virginia might be the exception to that or maybe it's the exception that makes the rule. The problem with Virginia was it wound up being a perfect storm of everybody being rotten. Then again, the initial reaction and the reaction of many still is, "He's a bum." Where the Republican reaction to Moore, to Kavanaugh, to Trump is "We adore him and they are faultless. We refuse to acknowledge the most obvious truths spitting in our face."

So while tribalism is a problem. I think it is a grape-sized problem for liberals (look at Bernie vs. Hillary too, for example) versus a watermelon-sized problem for Republicans... at least in terms of their public denunciation. I suppose there is some hope in that Arpaio and Moore both lost. Maybe in the quiet moments of the voting booth they can admit to themselves how scummy many of their own are.

Well we already know more people will likely be voting for Trump's opponent in 2020, it just needs to be more people in the right combination of states this time.

As far as tribalism, I agree, but I think there has always been an element of that in politics if we're being completely honest. The difference now, and over the last 30 years has been right-wing media reaching more people.  It's poison for your mind.  It was one thing when Rush Limbaugh was the king, but the stuff you hear from online rags like The Blaze or that  CRTV (is it CCTV?) make Limbaugh sound like Rachel Maddow.    The other key is that Trump has managed to successfully conjure up a victim-complex for himself.  "Everyone is out to get me"   It has been so effective that a large portion of the country is simply unwilling to see what is in front of them with their own eyes.  It's all a "deep state conspiracy" against an honorable man.

The one guest who flustered Tucker Carlson so badly that Fox wouldn't air the segment?  He hit it on the head.  The right-wing punditry is doing this because of money.  Most of them know better.  They know it is a ruse.  Even if they truly believe in "conservative principles (I question that highly)* they know Trump is not the guy, however they also enjoy being paid and made into millionaires for spreading misinformation.  They make a good living for doing so.  The masses are being told how awful (not-actually)-Socialism is by a bunch of talking heads who directly benefit from policy that keeps tax rates on the wealthy low.

Trump promised to shrink the trade deficit. Instead, it exploded.

Quote

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that — despite more than two years of President Trump’s “America First” policies — the United States last year posted a $891.2 billion merchandise trade deficit, the largest in the nation’s 243-year history.

The trade gap with China also hit a record $419 billion, underscoring the stakes for the president’s bid to reach a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping as soon as this month.

The department’s final 2018 trade report, which was delayed by the partial government shutdown, showed that the United States bought far more in foreign goods than it sold to customers in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. The shortfall topped the 2006 record of $838.3 billion, set as the housing bubble was peaking, and marked the third consecutive year of rising deficits.

So tired of winning.
