To clarify, that's not really what happened.

 

When I first started here, this board was about as right leaning as it now appears left leaning. Over the years, there have been some farther right types that have left or been asked to seek alternate message board arrangements, because they couldn't handle appropriate discourse (Sarge comes immediately to mind).

 

However, until recently, there have been just as many, if not more, further left types that have met the same fate (Midnight Judges and chomerics would be two examples). 

 

What has happened gradually over the past 10 years or so is that many of the right wing types here are now what you would probably describe as part of the left mob. Bang and Mad Mike are two prominent examples. Mad Mike actually had a thread where he passionately defended W for invading Iraq over WMDs.

 

I already noted that I don't really enjoy political arguments, so I will leave it as an exercise for the reader to determine the most likely reason these conservatives suddenly look like liberals.

We've taken a step back in race relations lately, but that's still nothing compared to what we did with trail of tears or screaming at black kids going into a whites only school for the first time.  We have to acknowledge progress instead of saying its not good enough because there's no silver bullet for race relations in this country or anywhere.  It doesn't matter how bad we want it, it won't happen overnight and some countries are absolutely further ahead then others in this regard.

Yeah I remember when I first joined the forums in the 2001 era, there was a much heavier GOP/Conservative/right-wing etc etc presence in most political driven posts.  Some of them left I assume, the ones who are left are stuck defending Trump as that is now the main driving force of GOP policy.  That is nobody's fault but the GOP base.  They could have soundly rejected his nonsense during his campaigning. Hell, even after he won, they could have backed away from his rhetoric and given political cover to the portion of the GOP that is not down with him.  Instead it's been the complete opposite.  It's been defend Trump at all costs, and it's rubbed off on the rest of the GOP like a disease.

Police brutality was a problem when police were originally slave catchers. It was a problem during the Jim Crow/housing discrimination period. It was a problem during the Civil Rights movement. It was a problem during the ascension period. And it is a problem today. Same with wealth inequality. Same with schooling. Same with access to health, upward mobility, etc.

 

I don't care about what other countries have or have not done, I am demanding more from the country I live in and am a citizen. And knowing the history of this country, I will not be holding my breath because it won't apologize for its original sin as a nation.

In all my 30 some years of working, I have only two close friends from those years and both are of the same political bent as me. I routinely worked with right to far right ex military and I never considered them friends, only work acquaintances. And personal discussion topics were never brought up.

 

I am not personally friends with any person who espouces the Republican party platform. I don't believe in anything in that platform. And the culture of hate and divisiveness that Trump and his minions have opened up is anathema to me.

You mean something like Obama sympathy not apology for US nuking Japan in World War II, or an actual speech?  Does it have to be in PDF format?  

 

I'll respect how much that matters to you so hopefully you respect mine. They could apologize until they are blue in the face, action still needs to be taken now, in the meantime, and after that.  That's happening, even Trump signed a Criminal Reform bill.

 

My dad keeps telling me this isn't the 60s in regards to race relations and police brutality in this country, I believe him, I wasn't there.  I know the DOJ's Ferguson report would've never happened in the 60s, though.

If this is all it took for you to lose friends of 15 years then you should question alot more than what "the left has come to".

I haven't stopped talking to someone simply because they voted for Trump, that said there are people I will not do business with because they continue to support that prick and his racist, nationalistic, pseudo-Christian, ideals.

My social media profile is highly active for my business etc, and I won't unfriend someone unless they are just overboard, I will however quickly unfollow someone if they're repeating that bull****.

As far as the criticism of @Force1958 goes, we do have a thread about understanding Trump supporters. Maybe more of those comments could go there and we return to more comments about Trump cabinet members, policies, etc. in this one.

 

I mean I've been guilty of responding to some statements myself, but this thread shouldn't become about any one member. I think there is value in having him defend a specific position or explain why he supports it (for example, I asked if he supported the planned use of eminnent domain by the President to forcibly remove US citizens from their homes to build his wall,)  but some of this other talk seems off base. 

 

I actually was curious about people's response to the McCabe interview yesterday and not only the aspersions cast on Trump, but Sessions too (though it really isn't a surprise that Jeff Sessions let racism guide his thinking).
