Oh i gotcha.  Yes, it makes it a much more difficult question in terms of "what he should have known."

I don't have an answer to your specific question.  The answer to your general question as to why what he knew matters, the answer is mens rea.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mens_rea

That makes sense, "is it reasonable to assume someone should have known that".

Definitely a big grey area but there are times when you just wouldn't know

No, again, I get it. But intent and knowledge matter IN MY OPINION.

And, yes, I realize this entire discussion is on the illegal side of the law...so anyone can trump anything I say with "he broke the law" but...

If he patronized that place KNOWING ABOUT THE TRAFFICKING, then it's completely unacceptable. Otherwise, it's a little more gray. Should we be held accountable for child labor in Asia if we can't completely trace back who made our sneakers?

I get you TD. Fair enough.  He's a ****ed up dude IMO..

Well, I don't know the actual laws...but am strictly speaking on how I would view it.

If he went into that place, asked for whatever, went into a room, and had some girl come do whatever he ordered...I wouldn't really pin on him her age or how she got into that environment. I mean, by the letter of the law he shouldn't be doing it anyway (hence the charge), but he's not actively coordinating the trafficking of underaged girls.

If he knew what was going on and that's part of the draw for him...well, then to me that's 100x worse.

The thing is, even if he didn’t know it, his actions contribute to this. It’s like Childporn or something along those lines.

On the surface, you are watching child pornographers which is obviously disturbing. However you are contributing to the exploitation of a child and probably paying for it.

I need more information on what he knew.  Given his wife is dead and dude is in his late 70s, I care more about whether he knew they were underage then him paying for strange.

We really need to end the prohibition against prostitution, these women coulda been gone to the police if they werent worried about being arrested themselves, that's huge part of what feeds the worst of the parts of the sex industry, not being able to ask for help because what they doing is illegal as well.

I hope this forces the conversation.

Of course...and I get that. I know that even if he was completely ignorant to it, his actions contributed to the propagation of it. I guess I would just judge him differently if he knew vs. if he didn't.
