He looked good in preseason.  the list of QBs who have done that and turned out to be garbage in games that count is way to long to list here.  If he did look like his former self lets remember that his former self was a below average NFL starter who may well have not made it to a second contract in Minnesota even without the injury.  Fact is the Vikings could have kept him pretty cheaply this season but were happy to let him walk and back up the Brinks truck for Kirk, I would not entertain Teddy as anything more than a backup.

That was a starter, made a pro bowl in his second season, then got injured horribly. Came back, got released, signed with jets and was neck to neck with darnold and looked better than him..looked way better than alex smith has looked with us.

So we are stuck with paying him even if he holds a clipboard on the sidelines for 2 more years unless he retires? Can't we say he cannot pass a physical?

Every cent of his deal in 2019 and 2020 is guaranteed for injury. If he can't pass a physical because of his injury we owe him is money regardless and the associated cap charge.

Take a detailed look at his numbers during the two seasons he played for the Vikings.  He made Alex Smith look like Brett Favre when it came to taking shots and he still managed to turn the ball over a horrific amount.  He certainly had potential and could have improved but after 3 years without meaningful action it is hard to see him as anything more than a long shot.  I would not have a problem with bringing him in as a Free Agent on a low value contract to compete for a job but I would not want to give up anything to get him.

Fact is, in the 5 years since he was drafted the game has changed a lot and so has the QB position.  Look at guys like Mahomes and it is clear that the future of the position is going to be in dynamic playmakers like Tua at Alabama.  Bridgewater would be a stopgap at best, we need to roll with Alex or Colt for another year and maybe look to flip some veterans for draft ammunition in 2020 when there are likely to be 3 very exciting options at the top of the draft and then swing for the fences.

It's funny to go back and read some of that stuff about our new backup QB.

https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/Snyder-Still-Sniffing-for-Sanchez.html

To Jason Campbell, all this talk about the Redskins' infatuation with USC quarterback, Mark Sanchez, must feel pretty dirty.

Lil' Danny Snyder, a sucker for glitz and glamor, seems intent on chasing the QB of the future through the draft, even if it means trading up. Sound familiar? Sure it does, the Skins traded up to get Campbell too; now he's yesterday's news.

So with more substantial positions needed to solidify a team that has a chance of winning next year -- positions that can be found via the draft, why continue down a path of ill-advised draft day decisions?

Screw the Skins' poor track record. Screw the risk of drafting a QB so high when flops in recent history have cost NFL franchises so much (Akili Smith, Cade McNown, David Carr, Joey Harrington, Alex Smith, Ryan Leaf and Heath Shuler just to name a few). And screw the fans, who, by a resounding 91%, don't think the Skins should trade up to take Sanchez (via WaPost Redskins Insider poll).

Meanwhile, Campbell's trust in the organization must be plummeting faster that Six Flags' stock...oh wait, that was delisted from the NYSE. Guess J.C. won't be joining the Danny and Vinny show for any recruiting helicopter rides when Sanchez visits Redskins Park this weekend.

Finding a scent to Sanchez probably doesn't involve pawning Campbell off on another team. So even if Danny Boy gets his way, the one they called "Lips" will most likely be the opening game starter. (Zorny wouldn't be wacky enough to throw a kid with 16 college starts into the fire, would he?)

For his own sake, Campbell needs to wipe clean behind him past poor play, ignore the stench of plotting for Sanchez, keep a stiff upper, and focus on being the best QB he can be.

The Redskins, despite appearing to have more pressing concerns along the offensive and defensive lines and at linebacker, are among many teams interested in acquiring Sanchez with their top pick in the two-day draft, league sources said. Earlier this month, Washington failed in its pursuit of Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, who was traded to the Chicago Bears.

...The Redskins hold the 13th overall selection in the draft. They have only five picks, none in the second or fourth rounds.

Sanchez -- in part because of his charisma and commanding presence -- made a favorable impression on owner Daniel Snyder, NFL sources said, during his visit with the team last week, and other teams also have Sanchez listed high on their draft boards, so the Redskins might have to trade into the top three to pick him.

...Snyder pushed to complete a trade for Cutler in an attempt to finally solve the team's decades-long pursuit of a franchise quarterback, league sources said, believing poor quarterback play was among the main reasons for Washington's 2-6 second-half collapse after a 6-2 start last season. The Broncos instead accepted the Bears' offer.

Thats personal.

I mean, reporters are asking players how they discipline their children, so you can't fault the guy for asking the tough questions.

If Smith never plays again, his guar’d 2019 15M salary AND his 2020 16M salary that is currently guar’d for inj-only will count against Skins cap in those yrs. Only way to avoid 16M is to cut him before 5th day of 2019 free agency; has to pass a physical to cut him & avoid 16M

So if he can't pass a physical by early March 2019, we get hit with the $16m in 2020 as well.

So we could potentially be up for a dead cap hit of $52.6m over the 2019 and 2020 cap years in just 3.5 months time.

Can he recover and prove himself fit by then if they want to move on?

Let's go with Angela Rypien... because, Rypiens have taken us to the promised land.

That picture is from 2013.  I'll pass.

Serious note, nobody should be counting on Alex Smith in 2019.  Maybe he'll be back in December, maybe with heroic effort it could be November, or maybe he misses the entire season.  We need to have a real starting QB going in to training camp, someone we are OK with starting for 16 games.

Or we could tank the season for draft position.  Whatever.

That is some vintage Dan Snyder Redskins Buffoonery. If Bruce isn't gone after this year it has to mean that Alex Smith was Snyder's idea. Snyder/Bruce/Vinny what's the difference? Around 60 Million guaranteed for 6 wins that had almost nothing to do with the Qb. Unbelievable if it was any other team doing it.

We've now matched the idiocy of the Browns by busting on 1/2 a dozen firsts for QBs and one upped them by also blowing it repeatedly with trades for QBs as well.

If this team was a rubiks cube they just broke all the pieces off, proudly proclaiming "watch this", and then still collectively failed in putting it back together correctly. Again!

As predicted, this is like the moron version of the already moronic McNabb trade. Doubling down on the idiocy of not believing in your own multiple franchised QB, while getting nothing for him,  by majorly overpaying a 14 year journeyman Qb. Gotta love the confidence to re-sign a guy who has shown you nothing, but was discarded by Harbaugh and Reid for unknowns on SB caliber teams, after years and years of proving beyond any doubt that you and everyone you surround yourself with are buffoons.

As always, this team provides the comedy. Never much to actually get excited about but always guaranteed limitless chuckles. If there was any hope, it'd be sad but let's get real here, these guys have no clue and are overwhelmed by their incompetent overconfidence which makes them truly believe that somehow things are gonna be different this time.

That is the trademark of a Dan Snyder run organization. Bruce is just the front, which is also hilarious because he's a failure, just like Vinny but what else is Danny to do? He's gotta play with his toys even if all he does is set them on fire.

Dude, just sell the team.

20 years of basically a Dan Snyder "Hold my Beer" routine on repeat.

Wile E Coyote at least held up that sign when even he realized he ****ed up.

The Redskins might just as well stick with Colt as the starter next year. None of the alternatives are any better. Low-round draft pick in a weak draft who won't be ready by opening day, or a third-tier veteran on a cap-friendly deal for one or two years. I say draft a project in the middle rounds, focus on DBs and the OL in the upper rounds, and let Colt do whatever he's going to do next year.

That assumes, of course, that Bruce and Jay stick around for another year. If Snyder blows it all up, then there's no telling what the next regime will do. Alex's cap hit will leave whoever's in charge with some difficult choices.

Bruce Allen's "solution" for not signing Cousins has left the Skins franchise in a long-term quandry.

At this point, let's hope that McCoy can play a full season (health-wise, performance-wise) and then the Skins can look to the draft for a QB after the 2019 season ends. That's because this upcoming draft seems very poor for decent QB prospects.

Maybe in the upcoming offseason , there'll be a decent FA backup QB  available at what the Skins can afford ....but right now it's not too likely.

Bottom-line:  The results of Allen's "all-in" on Smith was reminiscent of the Haynesworth fiasco --except this time the Skins won't be able to wriggle their way out of these cap implications.  So we're now down to "In McCoy and Sanchez we trust"?  😐
