The reason that it is an open issue in the legal sense is because it's never come up. No previous President has ever found themselves in this position and seriously considered doing it. I am constantly reminded of things this guy has said/done that I've already forgotten because there simply is not enough space in my memory to hold it all for immediate retrieval. It's so quaint to think back about how dumbfounded I was when Sean Spicer was lying about something as inconsequential as crowd size. Like, sure, it was shocking to hear a Presidential staffer lying despite obvious photographic evidence, but at the end of the day, it was a lie about the size of a crowd. Now the lies are literally about whether the entire national intelligence apparatus can be believed and like, whether legit treason happened.
