Sports Illustrated: U.S. Supreme Court Overturns Federal Ban on Sports Gambling

The United States Supreme Court agreed on Monday to allow New Jersey's bid for sports betting at its casinos and racetracks, effectively ending on a prohibition on a $100 billion industry and striking down restrictions on wagering outside of Nevada.

 

The ruling could allow as many as 25 other states to seek similar allowances.

True, but they don't ban alcohol because some people have drinking problems. This is good news and actually protects Americans by preventing us from using shady bookies or offshore books that can screw us over if they so choose. 

 

I would like to see some legislation coincide with this to raise gambling addiction awareness and monitor that as the legalization is rolled out.

The Pamunkey tribe just bought a bunch of land pretty close to Richmond (New Kent) and are exploring opening a resort/casino, but not necessarily on that land. I would love to go check out an actual brick and mortar sports book and casino without hours of driving or a cross country flight.

When I was a younger person, I had built up a war chest of about $10,000 in an offshore book.  My strategy was always to bet against traditional powerhouses that were having bad years, and that was when RichRod was running Michigan into the ground and Notre Dame was terrible.  This takes advantage of the degenerates who don't follow sports closely, but HAVE TO BET because they are degenerates and think "Michigan is always good."  I built $500 into $10k in about a year.  

 

One weekend the book just closed and kept all of my money.

This is actually a falsehood. Its like when marijuana got legalized, you didn't just suddenly see everyone turn into stoners. For the most part the same people who smoked weed before, are the same people smoking it now, just doing it legally. Same thing will happen with sports betting, you're not gunna see a country full of degenerate gamblers.

 

I'm all for this. A shame I don't really bet anymore, but maybe I'll start again now...

Here is the real problem with gambling. States are in a race to the bottom here.

 

Whatever passes will almost certainly force spooks books to be attached to some current gambling space. Either a casino or a sports book. And eventually they wll all just canninbalize themselves again. Video slots were going to be the cure for WV's blues. And for a while Mountaineer Park, Wheeling Island, and Charles Town did big business. Then Maryland Pennsylvania got in the game. When someone can gamble in downtown Pittsburgh as opposed to driving 90 minutes to Newell, West Virginia, well you lose a big chunk of your business.

 

This may help whatever is left in Atlantic City as the sports books in Vegas are definitely an attraction to a certain class of gambler - a lot of whom live in the northeast. But, whatever it makes, it will take from Vegas.

 

I think we had the right idea when gambling was a destination event.

 

Not to mention, that this will put my cousin out of business before he's made his tenth million. ****s.

The jury is still out as to what legalization of pot has done.  Lots of studies being done, for you to claim a falsehood is arrogant and / or stupid.

 

I would also point to the lottery.  One of the biggest taxes on poor and working class people of all time.  But at least it fills education coffers rather than casino moguls, so theres that

Prohibition of victimless crimes doesn’t make sense. People do it anyway, usually in worse situations, and people who don’t more often choose not to for reasons other than legality. 

 

Just make sure the casinos have have to allocate some of their profit for social food, and avoid being sucked into social welfare to pick up the people that can’t handle it. Have an out - if the only outcome is rich casinos and societal problems, then end it. 

 

I hate government dictating things but the truth is a sizable portion of our country can’t control their soda intake. So...

From what I've gathered, the legalization of marijuana has only been good. Crime rates have gone down and the money made off the taxes can go towards helping education, infrastructure, etc.

 

I don't really put the lottery in the same class as sports betting. Just about anyone can play the lottery since you're basically just picking random numbers. People who aren't interested in sports aren't going to bet on sports. Really, the only people who will bet on sports legally are the same ones doing it right now illegally through any number of offshore gambling sites.
