TK
For Immediate Release January 30, 2019 REDSKINS NAME ROB RYAN AS INSIDE LINEBACKERS COACH LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have named Rob Ryan as inside linebackers coach. Ryan is entering his 20th NFL season after spending the 2016 season as the Buffalo Bills assistant head coach/defense. Prior to joining Buffalo, Ryan held defensive coordinator roles with the New Orleans Saints (2013-15), Dallas Cowboys (2011-12), Cleveland Browns (2009-10) and Oakland Raiders (2004-08). Ryan led a defensive unit in New Orleans that ranked No. 4 in the league in points-per-game and No. 2 in the league in passing defense in 2013. In the 2013 postseason, the Saints defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs and entered the game with the league’s No. 2 ranked offense. During his two-year tenure as the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator, Ryan worked with OLB Demarcus Ware who posted 10-plus sack seasons in both seasons. Ware finished No. 2 in the league in sacks in 2011 with 19.5, the second most in a single season in his 12-year NFL career. Ryan spent the 2009-10 seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. His unit ranked No. 13 in the league in points allowed in 2010. Ryan was also instrumental in the development of rookie CB Joe Haden who posted six interceptions and finished tied for the fifth most in the league that season. Ryan got his first defensive coordinator position in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders and held the role for five seasons from 2004-08. In 2006, his defense finished the season No. 3 in yards-per-game. He worked with CB Nnamdi Asomugha who posted eight interceptions in 2006 and finished tied for third in the league that season. During his tenure with Oakland, he also worked with DE Derrick Burgess who posted 10-plus sack seasons in 2005-06 and led the league in sacks in 2005 with 16.0. Prior to joining the Raiders, Ryan served as the linebacker’s coach with the New England Patriots from 2000-03. Ryan was part of a defense in 2003 that ranked No. 1 in the league in points allowed and No. 7 in total defense. During Ryan’s four years in New England, the team captured two Super Bowls, defeating the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI and defeating the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Ryan got his start in the NFL coaching under his father, Buddy Ryan, as the defensive backs coach with the Arizona Cardinals from 1994-95. He was the position coach for Hall of Famer Aeneas Williams who registered 15 interceptions during the two seasons under Ryan. Williams’ nine interceptions in 1994 were tied for first in the NFL that season. SkinFanInMinn
Are we actively looking for people with gaps in their football resume? Maybe some kind of NFL coaching 2nd-chance program?

Malapropismic Depository
Just now, zskins said: Well he did coach for the Patriots and he did stay at Holiday Inn. And got a Super Bowl ring. We've been sending our Ex's to teams who bring them to Super Bowls (lately Joe Barry), so the least we could do is get back a coach who has a SB ring. evmiii
Wouldn't want him as Defensive Coordinator, but I'm ok with Linebacker Coach. The guy has been around enough he has to know something about defense and linebackers. Should be entertaining on the sidelines.

dballer
As with Horton, coached this position for 2 super bowl winning teams. Tons of experience. For a position coach, i like the hire. Along with Tomsula, just a TON of coaching experience on that side of the ball. Not saying it's going to equate to a good defense, but it's not a bad look to try. Peregrine
Wow, so once again we are hiring someone who hasnt coached in years because nobody wants them. We are like a rehab program without any counselors. Those liking this move I suspect are purely doing so off of his well known name, not after having actually looked up his history and record. Rob Ryan is a terrible coach, even at the LBer level. As a 12 year DC his defense averaged being ranked 22nd in the league in points allowed(about the same in yards), and 26th in turnovers. In fact, in 9 of 12 years they were 18th or worse in points allowed, with this good season being 16th, 13th, and 4th. Even as a LBer coach he was 20th or worse in yards for 3 out of 4 years, 17th or worse in points 2 out of 4, for a grand total of 2 top 12 seasons in his last 16 years of coaching the defensive side. Rob Ryan is a terrible coach.
The Hangman- C_Hanburger
Someone who can help Manusky???? That much experience has to be a good sounding board. I know Rob plays with aggression..I *think* the gripe was Too Aggressive/Too Often. Gregg II..maybe https://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2013/02/rob_ryan_would_bring_an_attack.html Bottom line..Manusky needs help and this may be it
theTruthTeller
Ironically, it was the 47-14 loss to the Redskins which caused him to be fired as DC in NO.

WelshSkinsFan
Pretty sure if we hired McVay back as HC with Josh McDaniels as OC and Vic Fangio as DC the majority of posters would be slamming the hire. I am still concerned about what kind of roster we will have for next season but I feel very good about the coaching moves that have been made.
