      ES Coverage: Giants vs Redskins

      12/9/18

      DEFEAT!!!

      Giants 40 - Redskins 16

Greetings friends, JimmiJo here, and I am joined by my shivering partner, Spaceman Spiff. Together we will bring you this all important NFC East divisional matchup between the Washington Redskins and New York Giants.

When I was last with you the Redskins had command of the division and there was optimism to spare. Since, devastating injuries to quarterbacks, linemen, and cornerbacks has left this team losers in 4-of-5 contests.

But there is still everything to play for, and if they can manage a victory today and the Eagles to the same Washington will once again have a share of the lead.

      I can dream can't I?

On paper, the future looks grim. A continued collapse will start the questions about the future of personnel and perhaps leadership. Yes, we can certainly point to injuries as the primary reason the team is struggling. But the record earlier in the year was masking some issues with the squad. No real arial threat. An inconsistent running game. And a defense that has been anything but consistent.

But these are questions for another time. Today, it is just two teams looking for a win.

      See you at the half.

The Redskins declared the following players as inactive:
o   No. 12 QB Colt McCoy
o   No. 32 RB Samaje Perine
o   No. 46 RB Kapri Bibbs
o   No. 52 LB Ryan Anderson
      o   No. 63 C Demetrius Rhaney
      o   No. 66 G Tony Bergstrom
o   No. 99 DL Caleb Brantley

I was happy to see players like Josh Johnson and Byron Marshall in the game. The marquee guys did not earn the right to play following the disastrous first half. It was historically bad.

Never before had the Washington Redskins trailed by as much as the 34-0 deficit they entertained today at the half.

I remarked to one of the writers that in 13-seasons I had never seen this team so outplayed as today. The offense led by Mark Sanchez was throw-up in mouth bad. At no point did you feel like they would or could score.

I tweeted before the game that it is time for Daniel Snyder to replaced head coach Jay Gruden. Yes injuries are the headline. But the offense was poor before the injuries.

No aerial threat and an inconsistent rushing. They only seemed to score 20-points per game.

What they did do well was hold on to the ball. And the defense was a takeover machine the first half of the year.
But turnovers tend to even out.

So I was more than glad to see those ‘backups’ play. All they did was show they should have been playing in the first half.

Especially Johnson. Take a look at your Redskins’ starter the rest of the way. From his first snap the offense looked different. There was energy. There was life.

      And there was threat.

Johnson played with more command, accuracy and imagination than Mark Sanchez. He looked much more the accomplished quarterback.

A word on Josh Doctson. You are an idiot. Without the stupid penalty you are not letting the safety out-position you to make the pick with 5-minutes left.

Following this game, staring at the standings and considering possible scenarios for getting in the playoffs is fools’ gold. It is all about assessing who it worth keeping for next year.

I don’t believe head coach Jay Gruden is going to make the list. Nor should he. He has had nore than enough time to do something here. He had Kirk Cousins’ starting over 3-full seasons.

      He had his chance.

I tweeted before the game team owner Daniel Snyder should let Gruden go and bring in Mike McCarthy. Washington Post writer (and friend) Rick Snider made a great counterpoint to that idea:

“Why would McCarthy want to come here? He has better options,” he said.

That sure feels like the truth. And if so, it may explain why Gruden is fast becoming one of the most tenured coaches in the league.

This was my last game for this season. I would like to thank Extremeskins and the team for the opportunity this year. I will see you guys next year.

Let me go on the record now and say I do not think Jay Gruden's position here is secure. Not with the likes of Mike McCarthy available.

This is gonna sound like another joke, but I'm half-serious, or at least half-intrigued at this point.

Is it possible to sign a member of your coaching staff, as a backup player ?

Interesting fact - our current QB Coach is not very far removed from being an NFL backup QB - and he even backed up Tom Brady.

And he's the same age as Alex Smith.

Again, only half-serious. It's not that far-fetched though. We'd just have to fire him as a coach, then sign him as a player :)

Sanchez won’t last 6 quarters behind this patchwork line.  We need to sign 3-4 guys to finish the season.

And probably 3-4 new O linemen since we lost another guard for the season tonight.

The leg breakings are contracted hits. Who is behind it? All the RG3 supporters on ES who secretly just can’t believe it’s over.

On this note, maybe go with "Fresh Meat" for the next guy.. and then II, III, IV for the QBs starting next.. and next.. and...

Hard to imagine any one guy surviving more than a half anyway.

The positive here is that Bruce won't have any problem pronouncing Kurt.

He might call Mark "Mork"

Or "Merk". :)

Honestly when I first responded I thought it said 2019, but I let my post stand.

For this year, my first choice would be to sign Kurt Benkert off the Falcons PS. Young guy with at least a hint of upside, could at least be around for next year's camp. Sign whatever vet to back up Sanchez for a couple of games until Kurt learns the offense a little. I don't really care who.

Honestly, this is the best approach. I don’t know if it’s the guy in Atlanta or some other guy. But sign one of these bums off the street and sign a young guy off a PS to learn. It’s almost a guarantee the last game or 2 will be meaningless. What’s the point of having Sanchez, Bradford, Manuel, Yates, or whoever out there in meaningless games. Most likely they will be cut at the end of the year. If you can find a young guy, maybe he has a shot of sticking around.

At this point, it doesn't matter who they sign.

If we go 1-3 to end the season, which would be a miracle, we may get a top 10 pick.  Personally, and I mean this, I hope we go 0-4.  No reason to do anything stupid and trade away what little talent we have or sign someone who will drive away even more fans than this putrid team will in the next 4 weeks.  Get some bodies with some experience to replace Sanchez when he gets injured and call it a season.

If Snyder really wants to make a statement, he needs to fire Jay and Bruce this morning.

Is Keanu Reeves available? I hear Shane Falco has the heart to lead a team of scrubs.

I'd look at Cardale Jones or Connor Cook, maybe JT Barrett, at least to finish the season.

Cardale is a monster at 6'5, 250. WIth our Oline, he could probably take the hits better than anyone else lol

Sad thing is, Colt was getting the ball to guys before they were breaking their route. The PI to Crowder pass was what jay's offense is predicated on. Find the right match up, then release the ball before receiver is out of his break and if the timing is right, its a completion even against good coverage. I know Colt only had a handful of passes (4-4)  and Im not saying we win if Colt didnt get hurt .. but it hurts seeing Colt getting his chance, Jay maybe feeling some relief he has a guy who will at least let it go and trust his receivers and what the coaches are asking him to do ..

Nice having Crowder back. He had 4 catches on 4 targets, quiet second half (for obvious reasons) but its nice having a guy who has a feel for the game, can get open and give his QB a target.

I was a former groundskeeper for the skins...

Unless they pay me cash up front even I wouldn't touch this offense with a 10 foot pole

Mark Sanchez went to back to back AFCCG's on the back of a strong defense and an aging HOF RB.

Just saying.

Do you know where the Redskins can find a strong defense on short notice?

I go with colt next year.  Cheaper alternative.  He is already signed.  Work out a settlement deal with Alex or trade.  Might be tough coming off injury. Will have to pass physical.  Draft young prospect in first two rounds.  Will Grier.  Drew Lock.

Fire Allen.  Fire Manusky.   Elevate Kyle Smith to GM.  Let him hire d coordinator.  Jay has clearly failed here three times.

Jay has always liked Colt like a son.  Didn't want to really pay Kirk.  But couldn't sell brass on Colt.

Allows rookie to sit first year like Mahomes and Trubiski.  Which really seems to help young qbs.

Last year of Jays contract.  Make assessment on him.

Otherwise you gotta clean house totally.

My short answer:  Colt.
