Podcast Recommendations

Heisenberg

Recommended Posts

After realizing I was starting to have major fatigue from DC-area sports talk radio I've recently started listening to podcasts to occupy my time during my daily commute home, etc.

My current favorite is Pardon My Take which is a very nice change up from typical sports talk. Does anyone have recommendations for other good podcasts to check out?

Wait Wait Don't Tell Me is a quiz-show based comedy podcast that can be hilarious depending on the panel.

Courtside with (Seth) Greenberg and Dakish is a good College Bball podcast.

More Perfect is a podcast about interesting legal topics, like election law and gerrymandering and such.

I listen to a lot of podcasts.  Some favorites:

From Vox:  The Weeds, and The Impact, and Worldly.   All great.

Freakonomics

Radiolab

Stuff you should know

2 recent ones that are very very good but not ongoing long-term series are Heaven's Gate (10-episode deep dive into the heaven's gate cult that had the mass suicide in the 90's) and Slow Burn (very detailed history of Watergate.)

Obligatory nod to Joe Rogan.

Church of What's Happening Now with Joey Diaz  http://joeydiaz.net/podcast/

This guy's podcast is pretty good, but this one in particular is great.  I've listened it to about 5 times over the past couple months:  https://findingmastery.net/david-goggins/ .  Navy SEAL & Endurance Athlete David Goggins on Being the Hardest Human Alive

How Did This Get Made?  A podcast about terrible movies, it's pretty funny.

Back when I had a commute, I made the switch to podcasts pretty much full time.  Couldn't stand listening to 5 minutes of sports talk radio to have to listen to 4 minutes of commercials.

I love this podcast.  It has 2 of the guys from The League.  I nearly died listening to the one about Roadhouse because I was laughing too hard to drive properly.

The Ricky Gervais Show is technically a podcast I think but I don't think its on podcast apps since it became an HBO show. You can find it on Youtube. It's ****ing hilarious.

I am a huge fan of Freakonomics and Waking Up by Sam Harris. Waking Up usually has a lot of great guests from many different fields.

This is my favorite episode of the Ricky Gervais show (NSFW):

I like Crimetown.. good show, it takes a specific city and delves into it's connections to organized crime. The first season was about Providence Rhode Island .. holy smokes what a den of snakes.

And obviously, i'm going to recommend The Bang Radio Hour.

http://bangradiohour.com/

It is not esoteric.

It is not thought provoking.

It is not politically correct.

It is not what some might consider mature or dignified.

It is sports, (football) but it is not stats and numbers and takes on sports for the most part. We're not imparting information or giving insight. No wannabe ESPN talking heads.

It is Michael Irvin tripping all over his tongue trying to say "Juju Smith Shuster".

It is God stopping in to discuss the game and who his favorites are.

It is unbelievably ridiculous fans who make unbelievably ridiculous videos of themselves and post them for the world. (My favorite this year: Speech Impediment Giants fan compwaining about Ben Macadoo On the Sidewines and how Wandon Cowwins can't cover. Episode 311)

It is vulgar, juvenile, and i think prettty damn funny. 13th season and going strong.. And the current episode is a good one to jump in on. (You can hear how wrong i was about the Chiefs, and how badly i can sing..)

If you have been around long enough to remember my cartoons, this is an extension of that,, in fact, there are "audio cartoons" inserted into the show like this week's How The Raiders Handled The Rooney Rule bit. We do an email segment with listeners invited to write in and ask a Question of a Character.. either one i've done or someone i've never done.. I never know what is coming so I have to do it off the cuff, and it can be fun. This latest episode features a question to (my version of) Bill Cowher. I spit all over the place.

It's fun. Give it a shot, Leave your maturity at the door and have a few laughs.

A lot of mine are hobby-specific, so if anybody wants Magic or D&D podcasts let me know, but I'm assuming that's not what you're after.

I like 99% Invisible and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me a lot. Really almost any of the NPR stuff is great, it's just a question of what you want to listen to.

For general nerd culture The Wizard and the Bruiser is a fun one. Each episode they dig into the history behind something, usually with a nerdy slant. They've done Dungeons and Dragons, The Muppets, The X-Files, Spider-Man, etc. They play pretty fast and loose with profanity and lewdness at times, so be aware around kids/co-workers.

Going the other direction, Wow in the World is a kids science podcast that's great to listen to on family car rides or over breakfast, etc.

For comedy, another vote for How Did This Get Made, which is incredibly funny.

Bang Radio Hour.  I've been listening for a few years now.  It's legit hilarious.

Judge John Hodgman is also pretty entertaining (couples/friends take their petty disputes to the internet court of John Hodgman).

This American Life is great.

I also like Nerdist.  Chris Hardwick is an insightful interviewer, and will sit down with someone for an hour and have a real conversation with them.  Gets some pretty big name guests

See what all the fuss was about with Serial.  It really was that good (season 1, anyway).

I like the Tony kornheiser show. They loosely cover sports, politics, daily news, DC area stuff, and his life which I find hilarious. It's definitely not for everyone but I like it.

If you like learning about random thing... try the npr one app for your phone. They have a ton of shows, and each has a ton of segments covering all kinds of topics... if you just thumbs up the ones you like it'll bring you more like it. You can find 2 minute long segments up to an hour I believe.

I saw something a few months back, it was like millennials reacting to Roadhouse.

They absolutely lost it during the final fight scene when the guy says "I used to **** guys like you in prison!" and then Swayze tore his throat out.  It was hysterical.

Star Talk Radio.  Neil DeGrasse Tyson interviews a person about a thing, and then Neil discusses interview with comedic co-host (usually Chuck Nice or Eugene Mirman) and specialist guest.  Sometimes Bill Nye guest hosts, though less frequently now that there is a spinoff podcast, Star Talk Allstars, which is basically Star Talk Radio but with science people other than NDT as host.

I'll echo Bliz on Nerdist.  Chris Hardwick has some pretty good interviews conversations with people in the entertainment industry.

In the same vein as Nerdist, I really like You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes.  Similar in concept to Nerdist (and a part of the nerdist podcast network), but with Pete Holmes.  Guests are usually more comedy focused, but he can get eclectic with scientists (one episode he underwent a brain scan during the podcast) and even had Aaron Rodgers on.  Can be interesting when he has a science guest on as Pete is very inquisitive and a recovering Fundamentalist Christian, so you have the juxtaposition of the part of him that wants to learn about science and the part of him that wants to believe.  YMIW also tends to run long.  2-3 hours is normal.
