I think this is reasonable. He did mess that play up. But he also carried the team down the field as well. Every quarterback in the history of football will make mistakes. Howell is no different and has overall played well on the first drive.

As an aside: Atlanta is overthinking their gameplan.

The issue is if he has one bad play per drive.

That kills drives.

1 bad play per quarter is acceptable and going to happen unless you're a top 5 QB.

Howell's issue is he has too many bad plays per game.  But I don't fault him, he's in his 7th game.

Talk to me after 20 games. If it's still happening, it's a problem.  Right now, it's a learning experience.

You should get 3-5 yards on a 2nd and 10 run because the defense should allow that in order to prevent the pass.

We can't move anybody and then run into the back of our own players backs.

It's horrendous.

That may track logically, but it’s not true. A run on 2nd and 10 after an incomplete pass is literally the least efficient play in football in modern football. Partially because it’s so predictable, because after an incompletion on 1st down most OC’s know that if they also get an incomplete pass on 2nd down (and thus must also pass on 3rd and 10) then they’ll be accused of abandoning the run. So running on 2nd and 10 to just log a rush attempt is something that defenses have come to expect. And so passing again is actually the best option. Stats bear this out every year in recent history—it’s just not the situation to try to run the ball
