Someone wake me up when more than half of a half of a percent of the population of Texas thinks this is a good idea.

I remember some poll not to long ago that had 15%-20% Texans (somewhere around there) supporting succession. I will try and find it.

The funny part is that The Republic of Texas was a terrible place. Texas was desperate to join the US because life was terrible as its own country. The history has been greatly romanticized by many here.

Here's what we can do. Allow Texas and say Oklahoma leave the country to become the new nation of Texasohama. Those who want to leave the U.S. can move into this new nation and those in those 2 former states who want to remain as part of the U.S. can then be relocated elsewhere in the U.S.- the full cost of relocation paid by the new nation.

California is split into 2 to get us back to 49 states and then Puerto Rico becomes the new 50th state.

We want to split Virginia into the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of North Virginia. Also, I like the idea that Austinites want to remain in the US, because that's where I'm moving next year.

Roughly the membership size of NAMBLA wants to secede? Not sure thoughts are warranted

What does a group that loves practicing same sex perversion on minors and used to march in Gay Pride parades

have to do with people who do not agree with a potential extreme left bordering on Socialist Nation if thinks go Obama's way?

Interesting dynamic. New U.S. gets that texas oil, florida beaches, and some good car plants, while the old U.S. gets Hollywood, Silicon Valley, West Virginia coal, and Vermont maple syrup.

And u guys get the cowboys while we keep the 'skins. Bam

When the tough gets going... Texas, et al. start a running.

Love all the crap they were spouting four years ago about being "real" Americans shown to be absolute bull. I understand for many this is an election hangover, but as bad as Bush was I never considered abandoning ship.

Shame on them.

Dana Milbank of WashPo: Let the takers go to solve our fiscal problems

The Confederacy of Takers

President Obama’s opponents have unwittingly come up with a brilliant plan to avoid the “fiscal cliff.” They want to secede from the union.

If Obama were serious about being a good steward of the nation’s finances, he’d let them.

...

Among those states with large numbers of petitioners asking out: Louisiana (more than 28,000 signatures at midday Tuesday), which gets about $1.45 in federal largess for every $1 it pays in taxes; Alabama (more than 20,000 signatures), which takes $1.71 for every $1 it puts in; South Carolina (26,000), which takes $1.38 for its dollar; and Missouri (22,000), which takes $1.29 for its dollar.

You know, this is mass idiocy at its best. Grow up you bunch of sore losers. I mean, I could see the outrage if this was the first term that he was elected to, but it's just a re-election of the same guy we've had in office for 4 years. You should be used to it by now. Just do the same thing I did and ride it out for 4 years. I didn't vote for either party in the last 2 elections and voted independent thrid party. But I'm not going to succeed from the union or move to Switzerland any time soon. Man up ya bunch of wusses!

we should just ship all the petitioners to canada or somethin

Canada is too good for them. Plus they have socialized medicine. Send them to Mexico or the Sudan.

I think Uganda is on their level on social issues.

First of all, not of these "requests" are official. When the actual states ask to break from the union, wake me up.

Second. It's the law. States can not legally break from the union.

and Third... these people are morons.

Which reminds me... speaking of morons....A special note to "the Donald"... You want a revolution? Great. If it happens, I'm coming for you. :evilg:

I'll take a free trip to Mexico....I need a vacation

where do I sign?

You sign the petition, haven't you been paying attention? :ols:

But I think you are missing the point... this is no vacation. You get to move there. Just think... you wont have to deal with all of those pesky regulations any more. Just don't drink the water. :evilg:

Why is this story being so widely reported? Same thing happened in 2000 and 2004 and I don't remember the mainstream media reporting of the "Jesusland" sour grapes idea from the left. Anyway this isue was settled in 1865, the Constitution is a binding document that binds any and every state to the Union. Any attempt at a real succession will be met with force (i.e In the United States there is no such thing as a peaceful secession).

I was wondering the same, people do this after every election. But, I don't think the White House had that online petition thing set up before that's why this is different. I guess.

Texas has been doing this for the past what? 150+ years.
