GhostofSparta
My wife and I were having this discussion the other day. I realize that it's hard to be objective about who is the best, because like most music your taste is influenced by your childhood. I grew up with Indy and Star Wars, so for me the obvious answer is John Williams. I don't think Spielberg is nearly as big a name as he is despite his talent if John Williams didn't do most of his scores. She, however, grew up watching Tim Burton movies so she's a huge fan of Danny Elfman's music library. So I was curious how the opinion of the Tailgate would break down on this kind of question. And noticing that many of these composers are tied pretty closely to specific directors, I wondered if that more than anything else would influence people's opinion. d0ublestr0ker0ll
John Williams. Love the Star Wars Trilogy soundtrack. Battle of Hoth is my favorite movie piece. Hans Zimmer is the man too. The Dark Knight Trilogy soundtrack is my second favorite. There is this 2 minute part in Bane's theme that I've been deeming "The Pinnacle of music" lately. Sorta tongue in cheek, but sorta not. It's unbelievably perfect, to me.
PokerPacker
I gotta go with Danny Elfman. He's so versatile. I do like the works of guys like John Williams and Hans Zimmer, but they can be a bit derivative. Listen to Holst's Planets and you may notice some stunning similarities to the Star Wars sound track, or to the Gladiator theme.
DM72
From Jaws, to Star Wars, to Superman, to Indiana Jones, to Home Alone, to Jurassic Park. There's John Williams and then there's everybody else.

zoony
The answer is John Williams. He will forever define the Hollywood score. Everything from the NBC Nightly News to Indiana Jones and Star Wars... hes just untouchable That said, i thought Trent Reznors score for the Social Network was incredible, and i always enjoy stewart copelands scores, mainly because he is stewart mother****jng copeland
LadySkinsFan
John Barry, especially the Somewhere in Time music.
Springfield
The only composer to make me catch major feels is Hans. So, Hans for me.
twa
I agree with Mcsluggo...... Morricone
Captain Wiggles
John Williams. Though John Barry and Alan Silvestri are two of my favorites as well. Two directors worth mentioning that ain't half bad at songwriting are Mel Brooks and John Carpenter.
757SeanTaylor21
I don't know about the best composer but the best composing is the gael from last of the mohicans by dougie macLean
Mr. Sinister
Hans for me. But you simply cannot have a list of movie composers without the great Ennio Morricone
Momma There Goes That Man
Hans and Williams easy. My Spotify is just loaded down with nearly all their work and both can dive between heavier action pieces and nuanced subtle reflective pieces so well. Taco Bell
I think that for all intents and purposes John Williams is the best, but I agree, Morricone is the 2nd best by a significant margin...The Mission has one of the best themes in the history of humanity. Zimmer while clearly an amazing composer, doesn't make themes that stick with you after a single listen the way that Elfman, Silvestri, Vangelis, the aforementioned top two, or even John Carpenter (good call on that one clietas) do, which takes away some personal points for me. nonniey
Why isn't Ennio Morricone an option, he was Segio Leone's choice for his movies and IMO the best movie composer. Edit: Never mind McSluggo beat me to this.

elkabong82
It's clearly John Williams. So I voted for who I think is 2nd, which is tougher. I went with Alan Silvestri.
shakinaiken
No love for James Newton Howard? Composed a lot of the scores for Shyamalan's films. Most beautiful being The Lady in the Water soundtrack and The Village soundtrack. Unbreakable as well. Look them up on YouTube for confirmation. Burgold
I don't think of Leonard Bernstein as a movie composer, but the man was a genius. Went with Williams because Superman, Indy, and, of course, Star Wars are iconic instantly recognizable classics.
