Teams aren't always right but they're right more often than they're wrong when releasing players, especially ones that have been on their roster for at least two seasons. Maybe they thought he still had developmental potential and were hoping to stash him on their practice squad but more likely than not they just saw the writing on the wall that he was never going to be even an average linebacker so it was time to cut bait. The likelihood that he's a valuable starter for us this year is NOT astronomically low because our LBs ARE ranked collectively astronomically low compared to other teams.
