Your Thoughts, Opinions, ideas and positions to target through FA or Draft.  With most of Mocks I've saw on NFL Network etc... they have us taking Witherspoon or Porter Jr w/the 16th pick, if that holds true then CB would be addressed more then likely....so I'll stick w/CB in this post.

Here are a few names available the Free Agent route:

Murphy Jr. (Cards)

Ya-Sin (Raiders)

Peterson (Vikes)

Jones (Pats)

Peters (Ravens)

Sutton (Steelers)

Bradberry (Iggles)

Dean (Bucs)

Nothing or nobody real exciting to me except maybe Jamel Dean of the Bucs but saying that it's my opinion none of these above mentioned guys are any more then William Jackson 2.0 so if it's me, and Withersppon from Illinois is there at 16, then I'm grabbing him and counting my Blessings and/or Joey Porter Jr but even being a PSU guy I'm still not knowing if at 16 I'm pulling that trigger

Thoughts?

We need to pick up a veteran QB, preferably someone with WCO experience (Reid offense would be best) to help with our install and to step in if Howell bombs. Any ideas? Just based on talent I like Jacoby Brisett. Gardner Minshew? Andy Dalton?

Other options I have heard are Bridgewater and resigning TH

My favorite of the lot is Brissett, he will come at a higher cost than others

Dalton has history with Zampese and of course, so does TH

I could see Minshew at a lower cost of this group.

There will be others released

I think they will focus heavily on the OL along with a vet QB first. Then maybe LB. Be interesting to see what they decide with Holcomb

Going to be interesting to see how things play out with some of our own FAs.

Payne - LTD or tag (and possibly a trade, though I doubt it)

Holcomb - would be nice to find an upgrade, but he’s also a been a pretty solid player for us.  If we had a guy waiting in the wings, I wouldn’t bring him back, but we don’t, so…

Reaves (RFA) - ST ace, but he’s also our 5th on the depth chart (and the team seemingly wants to address S in the draft).  Maybe he gets the right of first refusal tender?  I could see letting him test FA too (similar to McKissick last year, though hopefully better executed, lol)

Cam Sims - not too sure why we’d bring him back except for the fact that our other depth guys haven’t shown much

Obada - I thought he played pretty well for us, but he’s also older and might have earned himself a pay raise.  I think DE is a sneaky need/chance in the draft.

Schweitzer - solid depth piece

Larsen - possible re-sign, but mainly (IMV) only if we decide to cut Roullier loose

Eifler (ERFA) - got some good reviews in camp, so I assume he’ll be back

Hudson (RFA) - right of first refusal tender?  Or maybe a short term deal that costs a bit less?  I could see waiting to see what the draft brings or signing a starting level LB in FA

We have to assume we are on a budget either due to Danny’s financial issues or because he’s selling the team.

So, we are likely not participating in the early free agency rush where the big contracts are signed.  I think it will be quiet early on. The only big move we make, is franchising Payne.

We need a backup qb. Someone good enough to push Sam and start if needed.

We need o-linemen in free agency and draft.

Maybe a TE or CB, unless we decide to draft them.

Also linebacker.

I think he 100% stay. Rivera loves him. Re-watch the video when they told him he was going to the pro bowl. He’s stay without doubt IMO.

The ideal for me, ‘major’ QB investment aside, would be getting Payne locked in on a LTD and snagging Orlando Brown Jr for LT. However, some less ‘flashy’ targets I could see us showing interest in :

QB - Andy Dalton, New York Jets (very cheap vet #2 behind Howell)

TE  - Austin Hooper, Tennessee Titans (if we cut Thomas)

WR - Parris Campbell, Indianapolis Colts (injury risk, high upside, close with Terry Mc)

G - Dalton Risner, Denver Broncos (versatile IOL, durable, priority need)

CB - Byron Murphy, Arizona Cardinals (wildcard guess)

Gonna need more OL in the draft, plus a LB I would say. Unless we target within the division.....

T.J. Edwards, Philadelphia Eagles

Leighton Vander Esch, Dallas Cowboys

Facts.

Really wish Snyder would work something out to get Orlando Brown out of Kansas City anyway, we need oline help and it would be at least one starter who's semi-familiar with the new OC.

Signing two like I'd like may be a pipe dream without new ownership settled, so that first round pick better be oline at well, imo.

Don’t want a first round OL if no first round quality OL are on the board. So no thanks to pre-selecting a position to draft.

I'd love to add RG Isaac Seumalo (Philly).  Oline will be a top priority, and I think seumalo will be a great value.  He had a great season, is entering his prime, and Philly will have to let some guys walk.  We can still take oline if BPA presents an opportunity, and with cosmis G/T flexibility (I hope they don't give up on him at RT), then I think seumalo will be a great first step in putting together a solid unit.

Ok...

Are you saying there's no one worthy in the first round?

WalterFootball has at least 5 going in the first round in their latest mock draft...

https://walterfootball.com/draft2023.php

Trade down if we have to, oline should be higher priority then CB, imo.

Walter football is awful.

In my opinion, there are three tackles. Paris Johnson is the best. Then Dawand Jones and Wright.

There are two guards: Torrence and Skoronski.

Only one that is worth 16, imo, is Johnson. And he’ll be gone by then. Dawand might be.

Noted.

Kiper has at least three olinemen going in the first round and Daniel Jeremiah has 5, so I'll give this until the combine to see how it fleshes out:

I've warmed to BPA in the draft over the years, case by case for me still, but this year, and I'm not going to be happy if I feel like oline isn't visably getting resources devoted to it that it sorely needs. That doesn't mean reach.

Gotta wonder if Bienemy looks at the FA TE list and goes for one of them? Evan Engram...Irv Smith?

Tempting, really is, but I hope we be mindful with our resources given how many players are on rookie contracts, including our likely starting QB.  One after the other they are going to get paid, so I hope we don't act like we have more money then we think we do.

I'd be shocked if we didn't take a TE in the draft or at least some better depth in free agency, but we have plenty of weapons between our top 3 receivers, Gibson, and Robinson, that a big pick up at TE just feels like a luxury.

Logan is almost done, but fine for 2023 as long as he stays healthy.

If another team signs Hudson (RFA) I understand we would get right to first refusal.

If they let him go do the Commanders receive a 5th round pick as compensation as that's the round he was selected or do you get squat?

I don't really expect this to occur but can't recall. Thank you

Assuming 1st and 2nd round tenders are out the window, we can tender him with right of first refusal in which we just get a right to match, but no compensation if we don’t match.  Or, more likely, we use the fourth option - an original round tender and get back a 5th as you suggest.

Got it. I couldn't find that part, thanks skinny!

I figure he is back especially after the way played at the end of the year. He and Howell had big final games.

No problem mate.  I’d say there’s a good chance he’s back, though I do wonder if they try to sign him vs tender him as the tender is something like 2.5mil.

Speaking of linebackers, I still maintain they ought to cross train Shaka as a backer.  Can’t imagine he’s going to turn into more than just a back end depth DE (possibly a good STer though), so why not take advantage of the versatility.  Potentially helps the team and should also help him in terms of longevity in the league (IMO anyway).

$2.5? ugh that's a ton for him.

I was thrilled when Shaka was drafted late, thought he was a steal. Would love to see them use him more!

Thoughts?

From a roster-construction standpoint we already have a decent chunk of $$ allocated to Fuller and I think he's got 1 more year left on his deal. So it could make sense to bring in a FA and spread that $$ out over several years where we don't have $$ allocated to CB. But I think a CB in the draft could make the most sense since it's a deep class and I doubt we really make any splashy FA signings outside of OL. I could see a LB since Davis is on a rookie deal. Maybe a mid-tier reclamation at CB would work. Someone in that $5-6m range for 2-3 years. And that might fit best with the most likely scenario in the draft ... that we go OL-OL-CB with the 1st 3 round picks. If we emphasize OL in R1, then it would make sense to draft a R2 or R3 CB to add to Fuller + St. Juste + mid-tier FA CB.

Of course FA comes first. And you don't want to go into the draft NEEDING a position (or at least several positions).

If we traded Payne for a 2 and 4 or even got a mid to late 1 for him, that would open things up a lot more in the draft and FA. With a 1, 1, 2, 3 or even a 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4 you would have plenty of ammunition to grab 3 starters, including a CB.
