I don't think Dustin is as lucky as people think. He's going to have a looooooot more extra points to kick than he had here. Good luck, Dustin. You'll need it.

He's going to kick so many extra points, he may get a stress fracture.... Great going, Dustin!

Maybe he was just missing them because he's out-of-practice. He'll get more in San Diego LOL!

Great example of be careful of what you wish for

You gotta complete the transaction.  Nobody wished for Hopkins to be gone and for Rivera to replace him with the worst kicker available.  Get the Ravens practice squad guy.

Jake Verity.

I don't see anything impressive about his resume that says he would have been an upgrade over Hopkins.

Who was the "right guy" ?

Who is available that was a better kicker than Hopkins ?

If there's no answer to that question, then the decision to cut Hopkins, was a bad one.

I think Blewitt is a better kicker if you want a high draft pick. He doesn't even give himself a chance to screw up and make FGs half the time.

Somewhere, there is a right guy. Maybe he's in Europe playing Futbol. Maybe he's an incredible college kicker. Maybe he's a retread who will succeed on his second shot. It was clear through the preseason and regular season that Hopkins was unsteady. More, it was clear that the coaching staff lost faith in him and kept forgoing kicks because they didn't trust his leg. In a world of 6 billion human beings, Dustin Hopkins is not the thirty-second best kicker.

The fault is manifold. The biggest problem was not bringing in a challenger during the preseason when Hopkins was struggling. The second is a failure to find a better replacement. Blewitt was an odd choice. Maybe he works out, but early returns are awful.

As TK said, problem might have been Cheeseman, not Hopkins.

So getting rid of the LS was a bad choice.

Are less prospects out there kicking footballs?  I remember growing up it being a common thing for kickers to be cut after a bad game or two, hit the market and usually find another team.  It was like a constant turnstile of NFL caliber kickers who just were cut after experiencing a bad streak of luck.  I ask that because I was in favor of Hopkins being cut, but in my head I must have had an outdated view of all the available talent out there ready to be signed.  Not that I figured we would sign a career long kicking cornerstone, but someone NFL caliber at least.  If this new kicker was the best guy they could find to bring in, how were these deficiencies in his game not seen by scouts?

That's possible, too.

Careerwise, Hopkins has been average. Maybe a little better. But he always had a penchant to miss a handful of easy kicks every year. He'd also choke on big kicks. So, given his rough start in 2020, his awful preseason in 2021, and his uneven start in 2021, I don't blame the team for looking elsewhere. I blame them for not finding someone better.

Real life NFL kickers don't have convenient ratings like Madden. There is no easy "this dude has good kick power and kick accuracy, let's sign him". It's as much of a guess as any other position, but a whole lot quicker to sort out. The dude is good, or the dude is bad. 2 down, a few hundred to go.

Kickers are like your girlfriends.

You'd love them to be as hot as Scarlett Johansson, do sex like a pornstar, raise your kids like your mom did, do coooking like a 3 star chef, and so on. But those aren't in your range type of girl. There's what you're dreaming of, and what you can really get.

After time you learn that finally, what you have isn't perfect, but it's not that bad for a guy like you.
