Alex Smith Trade Thread (Details Inside)

Im Meh on Smith over Cousins, mainly due to the age. What really makes me angry is us trading one of our best young players, and the best slot DB in the league, for a 33 year old QB. Mind boggling. Ill tune in for the games on Sunday but I have to step away from this team until the season. So done with Bruce Allen. I wouldnt trade Fuller for Alex Smith straight up, let alone WITH a fricken 3rd round pick.

You do have to be concerned by this teams willingness to create a problem that they are seemingly unable to fix. We went from 2 1000 yard receivers to none in one offseason. We went from GREAT depth at corner to ok.

Lord knows whats next.

Depends what you think it would have taken to make Kirk sign here. If you share my opinion of him not wanting to be here then the difference is immaterial. If he signs for Denver on a discount because he thinks they give him a shot of a SB then the saving comparison is not right because he wouldn't have signed the same deal here. If he signs somewhere nobody wants to play like CLE then I can imagine he will sign for a similar number to what it would take to get him here and you can draw that comparison, if you accept the premise that he would have signed here over a fresh start anywhere else in the league. I think the only way he would have signed here is on the franchise tag, so I put the saving at 10.5 million and stability long term.

Why wouldn't Kirk want to sign here?  Why wouldn't he sign for a fair-market deal?

Guys, guys.  This is just the first move of the off-season for the Redskins.  Many more to come.  No one knows what other deals/trades may be in the works, what free agents we may be targeting, who we may draft.  I'm eager to see how this all plays out and remain optimistic.

It's like someone who doesn't know how to drive, gets behind the wheel, and gets into a fender bender.  Then you say "guys, there's plenty more driving, this is only the beginning". The only move that would make this understandable is if they had an under the table deal with Kirk and Denver, getting something back from Denver.  Any cap space they saved from the salary differential will likely be lost in replacing a slot corner, paying Breeland more, and replacing their 3rd round pick with a FA.  This move is beyond stupid, and anything they do later does not take away from it.

What it all boils down to is this.  Allen thinks this team is close.  He has an unwarranted belief in his talent evaluation skills (and that of his scouts) and figures a healthy team and good draft gets them over the top.  It speaks to his arrogance (which we already knew).  Why he thought we needed a Scott McCloughan type at one time and now decided it's unnecessary (not hiring a new GM) is beyond me, unless he feels that staying in a Holiday Inn qualifies him.

Love D.J Swearinger on the field, but off the field I just get tired. I don't like him speaking out that way. I feel like he is always kicking stuff. What do you think that happens when you throw people/organization under the bus.

Yeah! Just shut up and do your job no matter how unhappy you are with the direction of the ship!

Give me a break. He wants to win. Everyone knows this was a **** move. I respect him for calling them out.

Some team is going to make Kirk Cousins the highest paid player in football. I'm glad it's not us and anyone who comprehends football should be saying the same thing. Alex Smith = Kirk Cousins, both are above average game managers but only one of them will be getting paid accordingly.

Whether you think Kirk/Smith is a wash or not is irrelevant to the discussion.

Alex Smith is a confirmed above average game manager entering the twilight of his career.

Kirk Cousins is an above average game manager that has ascended each year he's started and is 4 years younger and could still have some more left in the tank.

Where I really disagree is on being paid accordingly.  Alex Smith is getting 3 years guaranteed money at 23.5 per.  That's a whole lot of guaranteed money for an above average game manager that you've never seen in your system with your personnel.  Not only that, the Skins paid through the nose to make this happen.

A level of incompetence in management whereby Bruce Allen makes--I don't make this multi-sport analogy lightly--Ernie Grunfeld look like Theo Epstein in comparison.

When you unpack the layers of fail in this debacle it will end your fanhood.  Don't forget that we're also going to have to let a franchise QB walk for nothing in your calculation.  Could have traded him last year and drafted DeShaun Watson.  Could have held off on taking a bad deal for Smith to try and tag and trade Kirk this offseason.  The Smith trade was an awful desperation move performed so that an unworthy front office might keep their jobs another year.

Man I'm trying not to think about it or else I will throw something and likely get escorted out of the building :ols:

Ask yourself this...

Why does he feel the need to speak out that way?  Why are numerous other players outright expressing their displeasure or dropping it to reporters?

Are they just stupid, disrespectful, malcontents?  Or are they professionals that know what professional organizations look like and DGAF what these jokers think about what they are saying?

Yeah, he's not the only one saying it. Just being more direct that's all.

Because he has given zero indication that he has any interest in that? He refused to even come to the table last year, he "wants to test FA before talking to us this year" etc etc. There's obviously some bad blood between him and some members of the FO. He indicated he would play for us on the tag again but in terms of LTD - We can't pay him the most money, we don't offer him the best chance to win a SB, and he obviously doesn't really care all that much about the franchise so what makes you think he would sign a fair market deal?

Brandon Scherff and a 3rd rounder for a 30 year old injury-ridden Richard Sherman.

Joe Banner should not make you all feel good about this.

Man, I couldn't agree more! People seem to love his "passion" but I think most of what he tweets is an awful look for a captain. He's supposed to ultimately take accountability for his unit's performance...yet he preferred to call out coaches and players for their preparation AFTER a bad game. He's supposed to lead his defense even as players come and go...yet he complains when someone gets traded.

I just think he should be 1) handling this **** behind closed doors if he truly has a problem with teammates or coaches and 2) owning the outcomes as a captain. I look at a true leader (even though I hate the guy) and can't imagine Ray Lewis ****ing and moaning about Friday preparation on Sunday night after a game. He'd ensure that his teammates handled their **** in time to succeed in the game.

I can't help but believe that had go in this with a maximum amount they were willing to give up for Alex Smith.  I don't see a scenario where we didn't get in return one of there young talents along with Alex Smith for what we gave up.

I will bleed for this team til I die (doesn't mean I will invest in them much), but seriously **** this FO and all its boneheaded glory!  They don't know anything about football or business!

Ball security (AS 5 Int, 4 Fum - KC 13 Int, 8 Fum) and his downfield passing is better than Kirks and that's what Jay criticized at some point this year

Well, those numbers are very misleading - Kirk had, by far his worst year with fumbles behind a decimated oline in a year he had to hold the ball longer due to poor receiver play.  Kirk’s also a better downfield thrower even though Smith had 1 better year.

But yes... Smith is better with ball security.  Good point.

Personally, I’ll take better td %, more yards, better completion %, better 4thq comeback %, better aypa, etc.

I do think Smith is a good fit for this offense.  Boneheaded trade though with Fuller thrown in.  We got weaker at our strongest position, gave up a young, cheap player, and lost our highest rated player on the team at one of the most important positions.

I had really hoped the PR angle wouldn’t win out, but it did in a big way.
