Listening to Finlay yesterday and today

Preston Smith - gone

Haha Clinton-Dix -- gone

Josh Norman -- stays.  That surprised me since everyone was saying he was gone prior including Finlay but he said he thinks they have too many holes to move on from.

forgot what he said about Crowder but on him listening to others they might try to keep him

On the radio this morning (I think it was on ESPN980) the vibe is that you can keep Crowder on the cheap since he didn't play the whole season.

Last offseason, I was of the mind that maybe you keep Reed for 2018 in the hopes he is healthier and more productive (and could help Smith adjust), and then try to trade him.  I’d see what we can get for him.

I would actually consider offering Crowder and Smith 1 year deals (the former I’d be fine with a LTD).  They both had down years, so similar to the aforementioned Reed situation, it let’s them try to put up better numbers to boost their market, and gives us some leeway to replace them.

I would be tempted to let Crowder walk.  I think that is why we drafted Trey Quinn.  We cannot afford to let Preston Smith walk...PERIOD.

Re. Crowder/Quinn - I feel the same.  But.... on both sides of the ball we need speed, and Crowder is closer to fitting that bill than Quinn.  I definitely like Quinn, but I see him as closer to a better version of Ryan Grant.  A guy you can trust and sub in anywhere.

My my biggest problem with bringing Smith back has less to do with Smith actually.  I want them to try to find that stud pass rusher, and with Smith in the fold (along with Kerrigan), I think they stand pat at the position.

Smith’s a solid player for sure, but a pass rusher that truly concerns OCs and qbs means shorter routes and the ball coming out quicker, which means a lot more leeway for our questionable secondary.

JMO of course.

Norman staying would be a major surprise, but Gruden kind of implied he'd be back so maybe that's the case. I'd expect him to want Crowder back, as for Preston Smith, I think somebody will come in over the top with a deal too rich to even consider matching. Gruden was also fairly positive about Clinton Dix, so not sure at all on that one too.

So is there alot of edge rushers coming out in the draft? ya sure p Smith is no jj watt or v Miller or Kalil Mack but I think he's good enough to keep around of course this depends on any coaching changes or changing of schemes..idk I guess we could do better than p Smith but I've gained to like him do to the big plays he's made to win us games..or maybe I should say plays that have sealed the win.

I dunno. I thought Smith really disappointed this season. He's always been uneven, but I didn't see him flash much at all. You would have thought he'd have taken advantage of the better line play. I can't see re-signing him based on production.

I am okay with Norman coming back.  He is going to have to be the step up leader in a young secondary. He is not great but he is not awful either.  I think he had some being torched moments back there but he also made a few critical plays.  Hopefully he will be more consistent next year but we can't afford to let him go.  Dunbar will come back healthy.  I like him back there. I would love to see us draft in a 1st round safety.    Jonathan Abram if Deionte Thompson is off the board.    There are some decent safeties in the 2019 draft.

We also need to find a replacement for Smith in the second round.

We need to pick up a decent receiver. We have a number of compensatory picks this year.   Earliest I would do it would be the 3rd or 4th round.   We also need some fortification on the line.

Probably won't resign AP but could you imagine him, Guice and Chris Army Knife back there?  They can all catch the ball.  i would like to see us be faster and run more play action in this upcoming year.

Ya true out side of the home game win over dallas he's been pretty quiet...how much play time has he had ..any chance of putting up a fancy chart thing that shows how many snaps he had this year?

Both Quinn and Crowder turned in the EXACT same combine speed of 4.56, only one of them is $millions cheaper than the other

Just let all of the unrestricted free agents go, avoid signing any FA's before the deadline, and collect more comp picks for next year.  None of them were major contributors, and this next season wont be one of playoff contention anyway.

That also allows you to NOT spend cap money, save it up, and roll it into 2020.  If we were to cut Norman, Reed, Brown and McGee, just resign one of our linemen FAs and fill spots, we would likely have around $25-30 million to roll over into 2020, where we would then, with the next HC and GM, have roughly 90 million in cap space, 10 draft picks, and a high 1st rounder to grab a QB with.

Except Quinn didn’t even last a quarter in his first pre-season game without injury.... and then I believe he last a half in his first-regular reason game (before going on IR).

I’m not down on his talent... because I’m not even familiar with it. But that’s a pretty dubious start

Why cant we?

Who else is going to rush the passer from the linebacker position?  Kerrigan will be 31 years old and he is not going to play forever.  Ryan Anderson is a bull rush linebacker who can't cover.  We need Preston Smith.  He was outstanding last year and he had a bit of a down year.

It would be much easier to replace Jamison Crowder than Preston Smith.  I like the versatility Jamison provides with punt returns, playing the slot....but I think Trey Quinn can do the same thing.  We don't have anyone on the roster who can do what Preston does, besides Kerrigan.

If we can let Orakpo go, we can afford to let Preston Smith go.

Rak was a one dimensional bull rush specialist and was a very stiff hipped linebacker who was not very good in coverage.  Preston Smith to me is a stud of an athlete trapped in a huge body.  I would be excited to get Preston back for 8M.  It seems like I like Preston more than most....I just think he's still growing as a player.

I don't know. Who could you line up with Kerrigan, Ioannidis, Allen and Payne and expect to produce 4 or less sacks. Four sacks? We can't replace that? Let him go.
