According to Schefter and PFT: Skins planning to cut Cobra Kai

The guy replacing him, Dustin Hopkins lost the training camp battle to Zach Hocker in New Orleans. Zach Hocker was drafted by the Redskins last year and was released. Hocker went 4-4 yesterday for New Orleans.

This team sometimes makes your head hurt.

I have him on my fantasy team lol.

Good young kicker, strong leg....cut him.  Of course.

I posted this in the tweet thread.

Here is the link to the Skins kicker stats. Sort by FG%.

For those who don't want to click, FG% for kickers with over 45 attempts:

Forbath   60/69      87%

Suisham  81/101    80.2%

Hall         54/69      78.3%

Conway   52/69      75.4%

Gano       59/80      73.8%

Blanton    44/60      73.3%

Murray    35/48       72.9%

Lohmiller 175/245  71.4%

Moseley  263/397   66.2%

Forbath is the most accurate kicker in team history by a significant margin.

figures lie ...

he's also a short range kicker ... which limited his attempts to 'makable' distances ... which meant we punted when other teams take the 3 points.  He attempted 1 >= 50 yd FG last year and missed it.  His KO's are consistently returned unless he kicks it out of bounds.

He wasn't "THE" problem ... but his was certainly a position that could be improved ... cheap shot I know ... since there's few positions on the Skins that couldn't be significantly improved

....and this was the "upgrade" over Bazooka Joe. We're cursed I tell ya. Maybe give B-Mitch a shot at coaching ST?

I'd be on board for a guy who's coached before.

Neither of the two we've brought in since the passing of the Danny Smith plague had ever coached before.

Hopkins drilled field goals from 27 and 21, but he’s also boomed every one of his kickoffs for a touchback.

But he’d have loved to hit the 55-yard attempt, no matter how long it seemed.

“I have to,” Hopkins said. “I expected to (hit it), and I was disappointed when I didn’t.”

Not sure I can agree with this

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/drivestatsdef2014

Shows what the defenses average starting line of scrimmage drives were last year when Kai was kicking off.

...

average is one thing but what's the standard deviation?  The Skins are routinely returned and they are routinely gashed by returns.  You should also consider FG distance.  Kai isn't a realistic option for 50yd FGs ... so the Skins punt when the opposition gets 3 pts.  Loved the consistency but hated the blocks (remember those), hated the punts from the opposition's 32 and hated the monster KO returns.

The team just now realized Forbath can't kickoff?!?!?!?!

Color me confused by this move.

come on now ... you had to know that was coming after the revelation that Griffin isn't a pocket passer

We have not figured out our kicking problem since Lohmiller was cut.  But honestly, I'm surprised Lohmiller and Moseley were this "bad".  I get kickers have gotten infinitely better over the years, but I absolutely do not remember Lohmiller missing almost 30% of his FG attempts.

The Redskins should carry two kickers. A long distance/kickoff specialist and Forbath. Forbath has been one of the best kickers in the NFL on mid-range / short kicks, but he has no business kicking anything longer than ~48 yards or so. We never should have gotten rid of Graham Gano.

I'm way more behind this move than I was against the cutting of Gano. Gano had a leg out of this world and his low percentage was because we had an OL that couldn't stop his kicks from getting blocked. Kai has missed too many makeable FGs to be considered our all time most accurate kicker. Remember the Eagles game last year when he missed one as well? He's just too inconsistent for a guy who can't kick it over 50 or kick it into the end zone.

Sure we could get Way to kickoff, but then we're asking him to perform a function outside of his normal duty and we may wear down his leg. Kickers have 3 jobs - FGs, XPs, and kickoffs.

I've never called for him to lose his job but I'm not losing any sleep over this one. If he becomes a great K then so be it, but hopefully we can find somebody who can do all three jobs of a kicker well.

So I found the time to answer my own question.  Here's what I counted for a sampling of kickers (FG% inside 50 yds since 2012):

Bailey 70/73            95.9%

Tucker 84/89           94.4%

Carpenter 79/84      94.0%

Hauschka 85/91      93.4%

Graham 49/53         92.5%

Bryant 72/78           92.3%

Succop 70/76          92.1%

Vinatieri 80/88         90.9%

Janikowski 59/65     90.8%

Dawson 69/76         90.8%

Gostkowski 94/104  90.3%

Catanazaro 28/31    90.3%

Forbath 58/65         89.2%

Nugent 63/71           88.7%

Scobee 62/70          88.6%

Walsh 70/79            88.6%

Prater 60/68            88.2%

Crosby 71/81          87.7%

Parkey 28/32          87.5%

Gould 53/61            86.9%

Folk 78/90              86.7%

Santos 26/30          86.7%

Bullock 53/62          85.5%

McManus 11/13      84.6%

That puts him 13 out of the 24 kickers I bothered looking up for FG% on kicks under 50 yds.  I don't think that makes him this "automatic from under 50" elite kicker that we can overlook his inability to sniff the back of the end zone on kick offs.  He's basically average at field goal accuracy and horrible at kickoffs.

Add in the fact his contract is up at the end of the year and he's gotten worse since a stellar year in 2012 (hmm I've heard that somewhere before), and it means another opportunity to improve our team.
