Welcome to the Commanders Big Man.

PHIDARIAN MATHIS  DT ALABAMA

cd565679-41e8-43e5-a5b3-a03ab6daef71

HEIGHT. 6' 4"

WEIGHT 310 lbs

ARMS. 34 5/8"

HANDS 10 3/8"

Overview

Scheme-versatile wide body with long arms and solid technique at the point of attack. Mathis is a Nick Saban-style run-plugger with powerful hands and a dense anchor. He comes into the league ready for two-gapping duties. He's more effective against downhill rush attacks than move-blocking schemes, but he's more a piece of the front than a standout playmaker. He can push the pocket on early down passing plays but is likely to come off the field on passing downs. Mathis should compete for early playing time as a 4-3/3-4 nose or as a five-technique.

Strengths

Named a permanent team captain for the 2021 season.

Outstanding blend of girth and length.

Instant ground-to-pads hand quickness off the snap.

Will punch and separate with two hands or one.

Possesses three-position versatility in odd/even fronts.

Harmonious hands and feet to punch and slide laterally.

Two-gapper with traits to sit and fight versus downhill run game.

Dents protection with bull rush or edge attack.

Maintains sack viability as muddle rusher.

Made a problem on the D-line, solved a problem on the D-line

Feels a lot like spinning your wheels, especially when you didn't have to and even more so when the Line is supposed to be the strength of your squad.

This leaves a taste in your mouth and not of the pleasant Brain-flavored variety.

Yes. My dumpster fire above is not over the player. It is over the fact that we created the issue to have to pick that player.

Not going to put negativity towards the organization’s decisions in this young man’s welcome thread.

Mathis is a two gap 1-tech that has a brutal punch and eats space like a champ. He’s not a premiere athlete and he’s not going to wow us with big plays. But he’s a stout beast of a man and will be steady and solid for us.

Confused but not upset. Could be there Kawaan Short. Thing is most people move there offensive lineman inside due to arm length. 35 inch arms and SEC production. Should get 3rd or 4th for Payne compensation. They had 40 picks or so between picks so they went after the guy they had to bang the table for

I don’t understand? We have no backup with Settle and Ionannidis gone. We can’t have enough defensive lineman and he’s insurance if we trade Payne. For those that want Dean, he’s still available in the third and has injury concerns. We have a third and 2 fourth round picks and hopefully we get a tight end and a buffalo nickel.

So you think they should've kept 4 DTs making starter money?

just got home wow cant believe we passed on dean and anderson

Im not sold on Anderson. Guy only played linebacker for one season. He’s too small to play middle and Holcomb is head and shoulders better at WLB.

Nope, but

Settle is 2.6 Mil cap hit w/ the Bills

Ion is 2 Mil cap hit w/ Car

Prospects of extending Payne is iffy

Even if you outbid for Settle/Ion and choose to commit to Payne. your not paying 4 DTs starter money. If any 1 of those 3 situations were different, you don't need to spend a 2 on a DT.

SInce we let Settle walk, cut Ion and made our own bed w/ Payne. this was a self created problem that we spent a good asset to resolve

It was a pure need pick. No way this guy was the BPA. Absolutely no way. I probably would have taken Brisker or McBride, but we did absolutely need a backup DT and its hard to argue against anyone with an Alabama pedigree.

Not a terrible pick, just underwhelming when there was still some legit talent. It did suck that so many of the guys we really wanted like Walker, Pitre etc. got taken in the earlier part of the round.
