On the agreement in principle. Alex Smith will average $23.5 million per year in new money on the extension and $70 million in guarantees. Nobody will be able to review that contract for awhile because officially there is no contract.

$7M, if that's the number, gets you one average veteran FA. That's it. That's not worth the 2nd round player and his cheap contract. And it's not worth gettinf 5 years older.

Jay and Bruce are scrambling to win some games knowing Kirk was gone.

Smith cost only 17 this season. Last season we had Cousins on the book for 28. Savings of 11. Unless the extension effected that some which could be an issue

wtf

@AdamSchefter: Trade term update: Washington is sending KC a third-round pick and an unidentified player for QB Alex Smith, per sources.

Seems reasonable. Hopefully it's front loaded.

factor in that they extended him AND dealt at least a 2nd rounder for him...****.

Draft picks are precious.  Team is still stuck on stupid

So that 3 first round picks, one 4th (cousins), a 5th (sudfeld), and now a 2nd rounder we have flushed down the toilet since 2012.  The wheel has stopped on a 35 year old vet with 2-3 years of okay football left in him

I wanted Cousins to stay however there was no way to build any kind of serious team around him at the price he was going to command , they let that boat sail. Smith doesn’t give me the warm and fuzzys but compared to what they could have replaced Cousins with I guess it’s not the worst choice, we went from mediocre to an older version of mediocre imo.

Ok so question.  The trade for Alex Smith has nothing to do with Kirk Cousins, so in theory can't the front office still transition tag Cousins in order to force some kind of compensation for Cousins?

How? Anyone can out-price us, there is no compensation.

A 2nd round pick on its own is horrendous value for Smith. If a player is added we've literally been fleeced.

Worth remembering that the 49ers got a franchise QB in Jimmy Garopollo for the same value only months ago.

Jesus it hurts that much more thinking about it in that fashion.

initial reaction is that this is a good deal....Smith is every bit as good if not better than KC, and I think Gruden will be able to do more things with him. Alex Smith was arguably the MVP of the league the first 8 weeks of the season. He lit up New England on opening night and led a comeback against us on MNF. This move allows us to go get the nose tackle, safety or playmaking LB we need to keep building this defense. I'm not in love with Alex Smith but he is a very capable NFL QB who allows us to keep building the roster and keep moving forward.

Good to see we'll sign this real franchise QB for a song.  I'd hate to have had to pay a fortune for QB.  How on earth would we build the team if we did that?

Only the Redskins could turn a contract negotiation with a franchise QB into a situation where they not only sign a lesser player, but surrender assets for the privilege to do so.  The clown show never ends and the circus never leaves town.

Its amazing all the new creative ways they find to suck.
