The #Redskins were never, ever, ever, never, ever looking at 2018 as a rebuilding year or a tear-it-down season. Not only for job security reasons for many, but for $$$ reasons now/future & because they feel they are a couple of breaks away from contender.

How delusional can you be? Bottom five defense, middle of the pack offense.

With that standard every team is a couple of breaks away from being a contender.

If you tag Cousins and he signs, you are locked into that if he doesn't get traded. And the cap hit is immediate.

In other words, it's impossible to tag him now as I'm not sure the cap space even exists.

We'd probably piss about and rescind it before he signs. Can't imagine he'd want to sign it anyway.

= You can trade him if he signs the transition tag at 28Mil .You just don't match a HIGHER OFFER and it costs us nothing. Work some picks in the deal.

Why would anyone give up picks?  They know you're not gonna keep him.  If they offer picks and he won't sign with them you can't make him.  They all just wait us out and he's a free agent.

How would that work? A team would prefer to let others determine the contract, then offer a pick as opposed to being aggressive and just outbidding, but keeping the pick?

Also under that scenario if a big offer comes, which they have no control over, the Skins get nothing. No comp pick.

Right now the only move is to let him walk in free agency and hope it's a 3rd round pick. Anything else is extremely cap risky. Just imagine if this blows up and the team ends up paying Kirk $28M to be a backup???

If we offer the franchise tag and Kirk signs it it's guaranteed money. It's not like the 5th year option with RG3. So the hit would then be 34 mill unless someone offered to take him.

Also, with the Skins having $52M in cap space Kirk + Smith + rookie pool would essentially end free agency unless we start restructuring and/or cutting players.

If 6 teams are in the competition...a bidding war will ensue. One of those teams will jump the gun and go after Kirk. Like poker..sometimes you play a weak hand to win big

Tag Cousins.  Shop him.  If no one bites, then trade Smith and his new contract to a QB needy team for high draft pick.  Possible?

I don't know about the NFL, but most teams have rules about the time frame between trades on one player.

Conceivably, if you have the cap space, you could do something like that. But you have to be willing to live with Cousins on the roster next year if nothing happened.

All depends on the details of the contract. If it's a straight signing bonus then we are screwed. trading him would create a massive amount of dead cap space. If it's a roster bonus in 2019 then it has a bit more flexibility.

With that being said I have no faith that Bruce Allen is becoming Howie Roseman in his ability to sign and dump players.

To avoid a bidding war.   He is (by most accounts) a franchise QB going into his prime... Very rare a QB like that hits FA... IF a team like Denver really wants him and wants to avoid a team like the Jets with a ton of money out bidding them then this is a way for them to get their QB.  Are they or any team willing to do a deal for 28 mil?  Id think its possible.

Edit*

Better yet lets just start making deals with all QBs.  Tag kirk.  Then we can set the market and sell high!

Alex Smith allows you to keep the team competitive and not lose the locker room due to lack of confidence in the QB.

The guys some are suggesting as the guys theyd rather have instead of Smith are laughable. Bradford, Keenum, Colt, Bridgewater. All those guys would force you to play the rookie you were planning on grooming and bringing along slowly like we've seen happen way too often.

Alex Smith is in the EXACT same Tier as Cousins. Oh Smith has never done much in the playoffs? News flash neither has Cousins, and those 3rd tier "stop gap" names you're suggesting certainly haven't either.

What he does provide is stability and an end to the Circus that constantly surrounded Cousin's contract saga. He easily has 2 or 3 years of good QB play left in him and if anyone thinks Kirk would have signed for what Smith did you're on drugs.

Sure it sucks we lost Fuller, you have to pay to get a pro bowl caliber QB, regardless of age.

We can't do that.

The second we tender him, Kirk signs the tag and he's a Redskin next year at that price. And you have $60 million tied up at QB.

Our running game is pretty bad, so why not? Have two guys behind centre in shotgun. See what happens! Alex Smith can even do some run plays. :P

For a trade to happen a team will need to first reach a deal with Kirk

At that point the Redskins apply the tag and make the trade. It is what happened in the Brunel trade in ‘04

the only problem with that is we may  not have the cap room anymore to tag Cousins, even if it's a temporary payout.... I was on the same boat about tag and trade, but now, even if someone was willing to do it, Im not sure it's possible.

No offense, but I'd venture a guess that you get behind most of what this team does every time they do it.  Only for it to always end miserably and then make excuses for why it should have worked but didn't.  The one consistency I see here with folks backing this move is that 99% of the folks doing it fall in the realm of the folks that always see a silver lining and remove history and logic from their view.

Those people have also basically been wrong 99% of the time for as long as I've been here (and probably for as long as the site has existed). I'm more likely to believe they're paid to post positive things here than actually believing what they write. People were thinking John ****ing Beck was going to be Shanahan's success story. Yes, that John Beck.

Thankfully, there are a lot of posters that know bull**** when they see it.
