The Sewer That Is The GOP: With All The White Supremacists, Conspiracy Nutters, And Other Malicious Whacko Subgroups, How Does It Get Fixed?

This thread is almost 6 years old and I didn't imagine the spiral the GOP would be taking.

It's pretty much all about screaming and yelling about the most emotional things.  Guns, abortions, fear of LGBT, fear of immigrants, fear of crime (inner city shoplifting, but NOT MASS SHOOTINGS). All these hot button issues can reach a certain voter.

Anonymous Announces Plans To Highlight GOP Sex Predators

A group purporting to be AnonOpsUnited (we can't tell anymore, since Elmo has screwed up blue checks) made this announcement this morning.

"Over the next 50 days, we will be releasing every Republican sexual predator, abuser and enabler, focusing on underage and consent."

They attached a reel about Trump's accused sex crimes, including the 13-year-old who said he raped her.

7 arrested at Capitol in protest as trans legislator again blocked on House floor

Seven people were arrested Monday afternoon at the Montana State Capitol during a protest after the Speaker of the House refused again to acknowledge a transgender legislator trying to speak on a bill.

Rep. Zooey Zephyr, a Missoula Democrat, was first blocked from engaging in debate on the House floor last week after Speaker of the House Matt Regier, R-Kalispell, deemed her comments on a bill to ban gender-affirming care for trans minors as a violation of decorum.

Zephyr last week said lawmakers who voted for legislation "should be ashamed." She also told them, "I hope the next time there's an invocation when you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands." Republicans have advanced several bills affecting trans people this session.

A large rally was held in support of Zephyr at noon on the Capitol steps Monday, and then people packed the gallery of the state House. After a bill that originally sought to ban drag show attendance by minors was bumped to the end of a long agenda, the crowd waited for hours before Zephyr tried to speak.

After Zephyr punched in to debate a bill but was denied, House Minority Leader Kim Abbott and other Democrats rose to object, triggering a vote of the full House on whether to overrule Regier and allow Zephyr to speak.

As the vote began, Regier stated the vote would be to "uphold decorum." Someone then yelled “bullsh*t” from the gallery and the crowd erupted with chants of "Let her speak!" and "Whose House? Our House!"

A heavy law enforcement presence was visible at the Capitol on Monday with officers from the Montana Highway Patrol, Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and the Helena Police Department. MHP, which holds the security contract for the Capitol, was posted in the gallery. As the crowd stood and yelled, and some threw red gloves onto the floor, officers attempted to move the crowd toward exits. Some in the crowd complied and others refused, leading to multiple arrests.

He doesn’t seem to be the type of guy who would be a big advocate for children.

Oh, given what we've seen about today's GOP I think he quite possibly is a big advocate for children.

Just not in the way you think.

Children's "right to work"

children's right to bear amrs

children's right to get married

children's "right" to be tried as adults

children's right to offer willful consent

children's right to trail by combat

there are LOTs of children's rights we just don't normally think

Who cuts tape with a pizza cutter? Typical worthless solution from a politician.  How about some scissors?

That would be an awesome prank photo op. Bring her out. Praise her for cutting through red tape. Them bring out some old records wrapped in literal red tape. I think I learned on an episode of the West Wing the phrase came from records of civil war vet pensions behind held together by the red tape. Something like that.

Then hand her a pizza cut and say "and now the Senator will cut through this red tape in a single symbolic movement to show her commitment to you"

/scene.

Where does the Tennessee House Speaker actually live?

Last week, Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R) led the charge to expel two members of the Tennessee House, Justin Jones (D) and Justin Pearson (D). Jones and Pearson were expelled for expressing solidarity with protesters in the House gallery who were calling on the legislature to take action after a mass shooting left six people, including three children, dead. (Sexton also voted to expel Representative Gloria Johnson (D), but she retained her seat.) According to Sexton, Jones and Pearson were expelled for breaking "several rules of decorum and procedure" by speaking from the floor without being recognized. No one in the history of the Tennessee legislature has ever been expelled for a procedural violation.

But while Sexton is imposing draconian punishment for technical violations of procedural rules, an investigation by Popular Information reveals that Sexton may be in violation of the fundamental rules of the legislature prescribed in the Tennessee State Constitution. Specifically, Article II, Section 5a of the Tennessee State Constitution states: "Each district shall be represented by a qualified voter of that district."

Sexton represents the 25th district, a community located about 115 miles east of Nashville. It is a deep red district, and in 2022, Sexton won reelection with more than 82% of the vote. There is evidence, however, that Sexton is not a qualified voter of the 25th district.

On his official website, Sexton lists his address in Crossville as 186 Homestead Drive, a more than 4,000 sq foot, four-bedroom home that sits on more than an acre of land. But, according to property records, Sexton sold that house in October 2020 for $420,000. Sexton then purchased a much smaller, 1200 sq foot, two-bedroom condo in a nearby retirement community. Sexton listed that condo as his residence when he filed to run for reelection in 2022.

Under Section 2-2-122(a)(5) of the Tennessee Code, "[t]he place where a married person's spouse and family have their habitation is presumed to be the person's place of residence." Sexton has two adult children from a previous marriage. He has one school-aged child with his current spouse, Lacey. There is significant evidence that Sexton's wife and family do not live in Crossville.

TN Democratic Party demand House Speaker steps down

Over the weekend, the Tennessee Democratic Party passed a resolution demanding the resignation of current House Speaker Cameron Sexton, according to a release.

The resolution was presented by TNDP Executive Committeewoman Anne Quillen, who said Sexton’s decisions have negatively impacted rural Tennessee and District 25 due to his inability to meet Nashville’s needs.

TNDP Chair Hendrell Remus said Sexton has demonstrated a disregard for democracy during his time as speaker.

“Speaker Sexton has gone to great lengths to shield the misdeeds of Republican House members while rewriting the rules to inflict political retribution on Democratic House members,” Remus said. “Leadership without integrity or ethical standards poses the greatest threat to any governing body.”

The resolution was passed by the TNDP Executive Committee on Saturday, April 22.

“The actions of Speaker Sexton violate the trust of the people of Tennessee and undermine the integrity of our democratic institutions; while threatening the sanctity of our democracy,” the resolution reads.
