  1. A day later, and I am still amazed at what I feel is the mis-reading in the Trump immunity case arguments. My preferred outcome SCOTUS just going with the DC Circuit and his trial resuming quickly, is likely not going to happen. But people assuming Trump will gain a lot (aside from the delay) are also mis-reading arguments. Gorsuh and Kavanaugh and Alito (to a lesser extent) and Roberts were focussed on a rule for other cases. Gorsuch had it correct that, it's likely whatever they rule will likely never be seen again for 2 political generations. And it also will likely bound Presidents in some way. So they don't want Obama to worry aboit drone strikes, or Bush worrying about misleading America regarding Iraq. But, Trump is cooked. Barrett enumerated a bunch of things regarding this case and a lot were not official acts. Trump's lawyer even conceded that. Remind me in 2 months...
  2. @Skins24 You could make the same argument about South Africa and apartheid over the years... yet somehow Nelson Mandela is recognized as a "Top 5 World Leader". I would argue that the Palestinians / Hamas need people like him to help bring about the peace - but even his past is not clean. It's messy. And it's not easy to simplify. What we have now with Israel-Palestine essentially a "one-state solution" with the "state" strangling the colony and the colony fighting back. America has sided with the state traditionally, and now younger Americans have taken the note that "gee, maybe the colonized people have a point and I can see why they are fighting back." This is what the protestors are focusing on. I'm sympathetic to protestors and especially college protestors having first amendment rights and being the appropriate place to discuss this. At the same time, there's still the larger group of Arabs/Islamists, beyond Palestine, who are anti-Israel. I have no idea what percentage of the Arab world this is. I think it is shrinking, and I think more and more Arab leaders are at least normalizing relationships with Israel. I still think many of their country-men may not fully be on board with their leaders (see, for instance, this recent polling of Jordan: https://www.washingtoninstitute.org/policy-analysis/new-public-opinion-poll-jordanians-favor-de-escalation-region-sentiment-against). That is Jordan whom are considered an ally to Israel. To us in America, this is somewhat of an insane viewpoint. We tip-toe around the antisemitism in the Arab world -- is it solely religiously based or are there other reasons? I could speculate on suspicion that Israel will want to take back all the biblical land. Israel and their citizens are responding to the second item -- their constant threat and history with the Arabs in the Middle East. You are all talking about Mexico-USA, could could we imagine being neighbors with a country that's like, "75% of Mexicans don't want to be trading partners with American and wouldn't accept aid from them." It's too hard to wrap my brain around this viewpoint -- from an American. The peace process needs to address both items. But how is Israel killing 30,000 (did they stop counting or did the bombs stop?) Gazans going to do anything but enflame both the Israel-Palestine issue and the larger place in the Middle East issue? Israel strangling harder is not going to solve anything. How does this come down to anything but the everlasting religious war? You don't hear many voices on the Arab side going the peace with Israel route -- understandable that their existence is a sore point, the world is not all of sudden going to say "okay, let's move Israel somewhere else". I would like to understand more on the Arab perspective, as I'm sure this western understanding is probably pro-Israeli bias. For most of us with a Western/American perspective we would think "it happened, move on and stop hating Israel" -- but look at what we did with the Native Americans. Sorry for plopping these thoughts in the middle of 10+ replies of an active conversation.... we'll see how this goes.
  3. Not sure we are following the same protests. Columbia's protest leaders have kicked out the bad apples. And not sure why anything but 100% deep throated support of Israel warrants upsetting people. It's crazy USC cancelled commencement. Their valedictorian graduated with a minor in "preventing genocide" (not sure if that was real or something fake that made it in an official article). Are the women and children of Gaza more or less valuable than the woman and children of Israel? If they have the same value, than dang... killing 15000 is much worse than the 600. In the abstract, I think two things about conflict: 1) The stronger country should seek to lead to peace. 2) It takes two willing parties to fight. And in the big picture, I fully understand why Israel goes over the top and doesn't strive for peace paths. "Arab/Muslim countries are violent poopholes. They don't know how to behave. They kill each other. They have always hated and attacked Israel." Neither group seems to be fighting hard for peace.
  4. Listening to the immunity argument. Kavanaugh highlights his concern over the precedent of Morrison v. Olsen. A 7-1 Supreme Court decision. I can see Brett writing a stand-alone opinion. Ouch... actually both Kav and Gorsuch indicated in some examples they were talking "beyond the present case", "we are talking about future cases". As in, they want to make the rules clear for future Presidents. I am not as concerned with the ruling after hearing this. Not sure why commentators are upset. It does seem like remand is likely, and it will delay. I can see why SCOTUS took the case, but taking it 2 months afterwards was ridiculous delay especially if they knew this was so important they would take it up. Gotta believe they were serving their political masters. So they are gonna craft some rule for Presidential immunity of official acts in criminal cases. It will go to the district judge. When she rules, it will be appealed.
  5. I am going back to the argument. Kagan destroys Trump's lawyer. "Can the President order the military to stage a coup? Is that an official act?" A lot of silence before he answered... Gorsuch with this dumb argument, "the laws don't apply to President unless they specifically name the Preaident." Overthrowing the election is certainly the "bold and fearless action" that the founders thought about....
  6. Its pretty clear to me that ACB is with the liberal justices on this case. I just heard the last 15 minutes of her and Jackson questioning Dreeben. It does seem likely they will tweak the Nixonian rules a bit, and perhaps send back to district court. Which muddied this case timing some more (except there was a good chance that would happen). I am not sure what additional clarification would be needed, but I guess Nixon got pardoned... right? So that foreclosed all of the judicial review of criminal acts.
  7. Well if Kav, Roberts and Gorsuch want to throw it to the lower courts, the case is doomed. Because Alito and Thomas will want to also. Screw SCOTUS because this delay is exactly what they wanted. This is why they refused the case initially. Our SCOTUS has been politicized. Term limits now, just like every other political office.
  8. You are not allowed to criticize 100% deep throat support of Israel. You are not allowed to think, "Gee, maybe the killing of large amounts of women and children in Palestine is the fault of the people dropping the bombs..." . You are not allowed to think, "Maybe Israel constantly gaslights us by saying Hamas is using human shields...". You are not allowed to rememeber that Israel bombed a clearly coordinated and marked convoy of aid workers. Yes, I know Israel wants to say, "You don't know the Arabs like we do." And there are tons of bad actors. But, that doesn't excuse their horrible bombing of civilians, not limiting collateral damage. The protests are recognition that Israel holds all the power. No one is seriously going to allow October 7 to repeat itself and no one will allow the destruction of Israel. But go ahead and frame it all as "these protestors all support Hamas, anti-semitic."
  9. I don't understand why we have a million apps. The world-wide-web was a standard. At some point all the companies turned from "Web 2.0", "Web 3.0" to "nah... we want you to use our app so we can spy on you." They can vacuum up our data via web as it is, but at least website calls can be traced. Whereas they could encrypt all the data they are sucking about us through the app and act like, "I need to serve up some API with special sauce". And these are people like Zuckerberg and Musk who rememeber what no internet was like. All these apps are like their own AOL/Compuserve CDs... Sorry, I graduated from college in the early 2000s and what has happened now is abhorrent and the "future" (now the present) is a damn nightmare.
  10. I think the judge will wait a few days and see if Trump violates the gag order (again). If so, I hope he puts him in jail for a day.
  11. @China @LadySkinsFan @PokerPacker Except that's not what is happening. He's paying some percentage of $175M, so that his $175M can earn him interest. If the bond fee is 4%, it's "only" $7M. Let's assume his appeals last 2 years. If his brokerage account is in a 4% money market fund, he will gain $14M in interest over those 2 years, thus making him money. Since the DA and Court agreed that Knight gain control of that account, seems like they will just keep his cash in there.
  12. Here we go again at Columbia University and Yale. https://apnews.com/article/columbia-yale-israel-palestinians-protests-56c3d9d0a278c15ed8e4132a75ea9599
  13. There's blatent stuff which gets called regardless. Then there's some contact that is allowed. I don't know if you are referring to something specific. I am just explaining why late whistles exist. I am sure by the black letter law, refs could call fouls on every possession.
  14. Well if the ball goes in, the foul didn't impact the play. I understand it... they don't want to be triffling.
  15. How is it that we (US) spent 18 years in Iraq and 20 years in Afghanistan, and that hasn't given us some great insight into the Middle East. It's a bit underwhelming... although Iraq and Afghanistan are two totally different countries. Maybe that is the insight... each country and group of people is very different.
  16. I hate thinking about this conflict so much ( Israel-Palestine) and what the end-state is. A two-state solution is good on paper, but how do you make it so they are not constantly at war? Is Israel able to commit to not expanding settlements? A one-state united solution is good on paper, except the Jewish population immediately is a minority population, and any self-rule would dilute the very nature of why Israel exists. Many people will say, "the issue is violent, extreme interpretation of Islam". Which Muslims think means Jews and Christians need to be driven from Muslim lands. In America and more western countries we don't really talk about this as much as Israelis do.
  17. I wanted this guy to ask "what's wrong with being civil and nice?" In the first minute. And that theme continued the whole video. "We don't want to be nice to people who are different then us." "If a dog barked at me, I would kick it away..." [24 mins in...] jerk. "They are trying to brainwash us, that its okay. We don't have to accept everyone. Furries and LGBTQIA protesting us, we'd get in trouble. Our school is very leftist." [37 minutes] "They belong in mental hospitals..." [37] "If you are a furry and you want to be a furry, you should just be homeschooled. It will keep them from being bullied and stop us from (train of thought breaks up)... they literally said we can't have altercations with these kids. " [38] "They threatened to bark and bite us... so we threw oranges at them..." [38:30] "They try to appease the minority..." If you are triggered by furries, you may have problems in life. I bet they don't bite, or scratch or spray febreze. They probably bark. Are there people who really "identify as animals"? This is a 10/10 troll job!!!!
  18. New citizens learn about "rule of law". Three simple precepts. 1) Everyone must obey the law 2) No one is above the law 3) The US government and its leaders must also obey the law. The Trump exception to all this is ridiculous.
  19. I don't trust Mike Johnson. Or... has he delayed enough to cover doing the right thing? Will be interesting to see if he keeps his Speakership.
  20. Feels bad for Barca, no guarantee PSG slots it past Ter Stegen. PSG will be done in by Donnaroma. Real Madrid v. Man City was the real championship. I knew Real would go through when it went to pens. 2 Bundes teams? Lolwat...
  21. Trump is gonna spend the next 2 months on trial. Biden campaigns. Then Trump likely has another trial (although its clear our partisan Supreme Court will try to delay that accountability). And Biden campaigns. GOP has this narrative that Biden is gonna keel over by November. When he looks sane and transparent next to a convicted cult leader, it should be 10+ points.
  22. Also... they can ask the judge to strike and if he agrees it doesn't count against their 10. So they do have unlimited strikes in that way. It's 10 discretionary strikes.
