heat-index-116.gif?uuid=fyJbjLJVEeCagMRrnLElXw

NOAA has upped its peak heat index prediction for D.C. Friday to a stunning, sweltering 116 degrees. Remarkably, it predicts there is a 90 percent chance it will reach at least 110 and a 100 percent chance of at least 105. Earlier today, NOAA was predicting a maximum heat index of 109 Friday.

And poor Richmond, Va.! NOAA projects its heat index will soar to a stifling 118 degrees.

Please if you're in D.C. or in the South be careful today. High's in the low 100's and heat indexes could approach 120. Don't wanna hear about any of you fools dying of heat stroke.

Some heat records:

Washington DC - July, 1930 - 106 F

Baltimore - 1930 - 104 F

Miami - July 21, 1942 - 100 F

New York City - 106 F

North America - Death Valley, Calif. - 1913 - 134 F

World - Libya - 1922 - 136 F

Also, despite the bad advise on the internet medical sites, you must cool the body down more aggressively than "sitting in the shade" and "having a drink" once you start to over heat. You don't know how bad the situation is because your body doesn't tell you how dehydrated it is or how inefficient it's cooling system is working. Fluids you drink have to work their way into your system and by the time they do it could be too late. If you feel dizzy or start to cramp up, drink lots of fluid AND aggressively reduce your body temp by jumping in cooler water (shower or pool) or at the very least apply cold items to the head and neck.

11:30 AM in Boston...96 degrees and feels like 103. Horrible.

Yeah, a friend of mine is doing the Susan G. Komen 3 day walk up there this weekend. She said they had to cut it short today because it was too awful. No way I would be walking 20 miles in this heat, that's downright dangerous.
