R base has been headed that direction since at least 08. add: it came down to Cruz vs Trump, Cray vs Cray. Andy between the two of them they had 50+ percent from early on. Ever since Obama was elected things got way worse real quick. The people who voted for trump also think Obama is a muslim terrorist who was trying to destroy america with his socialism, who of course was born in Kenya and an illegitimate president. I meant to say any one (not anyone) of them could have beaten Trump and likely any two to four as well but not any 16. Trump had his 20% diehards that increased as he won but he'd have never have won any of the primaries if he was only contending with 2-4 others instead on the 15 he had.
