What happened to that ES poster?

I decided to scroll back through the thread now that I’m back at my hotel room, before I go to sleep and wake up to crush another day of setting up a brand new office. I’m getting too old for this ****.

the BGO/ES thing is frustrating to me because I’m one of the few/only who spent a significant time on ES, left to go spend significant time on BGO, and came back to ES. I went to BGO because the mods here pissed me off, and I came back because I was banned from BGO (I’m not gonna say I didn’t deserve it but I’m still a bit bitter how that all went down, but no reason to air that here.)

The two communities are extreme opposites in their makeup. BGO was a small, tight nit community and when I was there ES was in it’s later years of being a crazy place full of tons of active posters. I recall enjoying BGO immediately because you could follow topics and build relationships because it was a small community. At that time you could post on a thread in the stadium here early morning at work, come back to check on things after lunch and there’s 50+ posts and it was hard to keep up and care. When I wound up back here the community quickly shrank. On that note with new ownership and potentially a new direction away from perpetual suck and mismanagement, this place may blow up again and (for someone like me) become hard to enjoy again. We’ll see - that would be good for the team.

but back to your post. BGO was made up of people who were looking for a place different than ES. I’d confidently bet that 99.9% of posters there, came from ES. So I think it’s fair to say that by being there (and to be fair, any of the other Redskins’s boards over the years that tried to be different than here) you had a problem with here. So the idea they would be critical of the board or the mods seems pretty obvious and expected. I read through the linked thread - not sure I see anything uncivil there, seems like an exaggeration…

but there’s absolutely good people there. People that are fun to talk to, smart people that bring something to the table every time you engage with them. I can’t speak for the stadium anymore but if you took the core tailgate posters we interact with, made a community with them and stripped out the drive by posters, you’d have BGO…

even though I think both communities have different goals, by virtue of being team forums they will be competitive with each other; by extension, being different means each side will not like what the other side is offering as they like what their side offers.

as far as people criticizing jumbo - he signed up for that, and he is/was one of the more active mods. And I think he can handle it. You cannot be a mod of this community, invite political discussions, and not wind up with some people having negative opinions on how you run things.

for me. Politics is so depressing anymore I can’t do it. I haven’t paid attention to the news since well before Christmas. And by extension I can’t bring myself to discuss it here anymore. It’s to the point where I can predict exactly which posters will say exactly what at any given time. And for whatever reason I’ve decided I can’t handle how depressing it is anymore. I’ve reach a state with politics like I did with the team that caused me to abandon the stadium years ago. So while I’ve been coming here to see what’s going on - I don’t spend much time cause it’s the same and I don’t have anything to say because it’s the same. I am trying in the stadium but there’s just a ton of inane arguing about things that I’m not sure matter, by people I’m not sure have any real insight and appear to just have time to waste.

anyways. I spent significant time at BGO. I was banned from there. I disagree with how that played out. Yet I’m still here to tell you they’re good people and it’s a good community. Whatever that’s worth.

and now I’ve done that thing where I write way more than anyone wants to read. Sorry.

So I guess we can disagree with what is civil/respectful.  Saying the environment here is nasty and talking about people being a legend in their own mind aren't things I generally consider to be showing respect.  That isn't to indicate that Jumbo can't take it.  There's a difference between saying those things and saying things like, "I didn't enjoy the environment there."  "I think the mods were to strict in enforcing the rules."  But I'd say the tone of some people in that thread isn't what I'd consider respectful.

I was here before they split and interacted with many of them, and people like Burgold that posted here for a long time after BGO was created post there.  Through the years many people that have been banned here have end up there.  Many of them I don't really have any issue with and don't doubt they are good people.  But even good people sometimes can act in a manner that isn't respectful.

I think for everybody that post here for very long the interest in this board wanes and ebbs and flows.  You can only have the same conversations with the same people so many times.  I think that's normal.  And I think the current political situation makes things worse.  People have become more narrowed in terms of the opinions they express.  And I certainly understand being depressed by the current political situation.  I'm voting Democrat, but I certainly feel like I've been left without a political party and representation that is very representative, and I don't see that changing any time soon.  And that's depressing.

This assumes a level of perfection rarely achieved. I'm sure someone at some point probably didn't deserve it.

Still the best run board anywhere.

I do want to avoid an extended tangent of any back n forth of a "BGO" vs "ES" nature.

There's some pertinent connection to the thread topic of who isn't here anymore and speculating, or actually being informed, on a "why" they're not here. And obviously there can be a connection to moderating, and certainly not just mine.

I.e. some old mods here generally thought of "the really nice ones" actually banned a fair amount of peeps back in the day of it being a very large board. zoony and art had more aggrieved recipients then I did year for year, not that how I'm perceived by some troubles me. It doesn't, other than the way I tend to regard most any form of aggressive stupidity or misinformation and might respond to as I see fit.

I may make another post later on my moderation and on other moderators here inc. the days before many of the old staff left and after, trying to keep it tied to some of the "whys" as to some of the "whos" aren't here anymore.

But I will make some remarks now about this board, past and present. This board was founded to be a cut above the norm in quality.

For the last 20 years TK and I agreed in maintaining that goal. Desired qualities in threads were intelligence, humor, stimulation, even provocative views minus trolling or other rule violating behaviors, accurate information, solid debate, diverse views in general, and so on.

Tough skin was also recommended even though there were numerous rules that were meant to be enforced to cut any bs short.

A community was sought, and the vision wasn't "just another football forum", but an invigorating and stimulating Village of the Damned 😛👹 that you'd enjoy and that made you think and engage on different matters.

The rules are to support that standard and both "active" mods and mods who aren't so "active" are important to that in managing board behavior and/or providing as much quality content as their unpaid time allows.

I wrote all that because all the way back to when I was heavily lobbied by multiple members of the old staff to become a mod, after only posting here for a year, I said no cuz I had zero interest in it, but I had already become enamored by a place with goals  like this and it was a superior forum imo to others I checked to discuss my team. I lived in AK and the Pac NW my whole life and it had been a desert for discussing the redskins. So I chose to accept and to contribute as much content and appropriate but active moderation as requested and with the commitment I give to all my volunteer work in other areas. Though I have slowed down in that part of life too as I am older and more decrepit now. 😛

@tshile I do recommend you follow the inclination you had to take a break if you continue to feel as described.

You're typically an intelligent, valued, es-eccentric type 😁 poster here that I know many members appreciate.

Nevertheless, in recent months your posts have featured a trend that went from perpetual complaining, I would even say at a point it became kinda whiny, about other posters views, to actually insulting other posters per rule on several occasions.

It may rankle you to be told this but you almost got a temp ban for rule five violations several times in the last 3-4 months. I just decided to let you try to work through it cuz your long history is of a solid contributor, and because  those you insulted didn't seem too affected.

Some of your perceptions of some others had some degree of validity but you were on a tack there that went to exaggeration and line-crossing.

Anyhoo, do whatever you think best for you but I wager most es'ers here hope you are able to maintain a presence, and hopefully a more gruntled and less annoyed one. 😉

@Jumbo

heard.

i promise I wasn’t trying to do a es vs BGO thing. Buried in that post was an intention of just pointing out they are different places that offer different things and either can appeal to different people; or both.

Right now I’m trying the ignorance is bliss routine.

id like to think if I could be king I would fix a lot of issues and do good for the country.

unfortunately I am not king. I am one person. In the grand scheme of things I have absolutely zero control.

tired of worrying, or dedicating time to, a thing I can’t control.

elect Trump. Or don’t. Burn it to the ground. Or don’t. I don’t really care anymore. Life’s too short to care about **** you can’t control. I got a truck to buy, and a **** ton of skiing to do before winter breaks. I got 2 kids that deserve my time and a job where I’m well taken care off across the board. Every single person in my professional career strongly told me to not go to work for lawyers - and these ones are just the absolute nicest and coolest people, glad I took the chance. Even if I’m exhausted.

Anyways. The people I actually interact with here - I value. That’s why I bothered being here. I still come here once or twice a week.  I read.

when I think I have something worth saying I will. I’m a bit overdue to spend some time saying far less and listening more.

Predicto, Zoony, and I used to have an email group chat that became a text group chat. I met Zoony for dinner once when he was in town. Really good guy. Predicto retired from the conversation shortly after Trump was elected. He seemed to have a real reaction to that.

Zoony and I kept talking but I think it was Trump stuff that eventually became too much. I'm not entirely sure why we stopped talking. I still like the guy.

A decent number of the people that have been mentioned went over to the Pickle Party (reason shall prevail) site when it started. I've not checked in on thos weirdos in years so I have no idea who (if anyone) is still left. I have watched their video podcast a few times. You think late middle-aged men without chins and weird Maryland accents? Well, buddy, I have the video podcast for you.

I know the Blondie story. I'm a winner.

It's my nickname for BGO. It's the political party The Gang formed on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The motto was "reason shall prevail."

BGO sold itself as the calm, intelligent, rational alternative to this place. Within a week, every thread was just McD5 or whatever that loon's name was and Sarge yelling at each other.

I a glad Die Hard is still here, hat's off, he is one of the site's original owners, he built a tremendous community and we still enjoy it today. I'm over 20 yrs here.

It had minimal impact on the multiverse in the long run. I wonder if former es mod Henry still posts there. Really respected and liked that guy. He's a truly excellent human. Katy was a pal of mine too and I think she's still there sometimes. 🙂
