Read This Before Shouting "Fire the Kicker"

I know its an unpopular move within some in the media.  Because:

A. Hopkins is a great guy

B.  Some kickers find their way later in their career, see Gano

C.  Plan B at kicker is often rough and you might have to go through a number of them.

I am personally OK with the risk.  They aren't going to the playoffs anyway.  So what's the harm?    When you are going for it on 4th and 10 because you can't trust your kicker to make a 53 yard field goal, that's a problem.  You got kickers who can make 60 yard field goals or at least has a shot.  Hopkins career high is 56.  It would be a miracle to kick a 55 yard field goal successfully with the game on the line, lucky enough for him to make a 45 yard field goal in the clutch.  Missing a 48 yard field goal with the game on the line versus the Giants was very him but he lucked out.

He arguably single handily helped blow their chances versus Seattle last year.  Killed them in the 2016 season in the failed march to the playoffs.  Among other things.

His field goal percentage was one of the lowest in the league last year.  It's helped this year to have the Giants kick not count, the extra points not count and apparently Rivera feeling gun shy to challange him with long kicks.

So who is Chris Blewitt? Not a lot of info out there about him.

He's 26 years old.

He's a local guy - kicked at West Potomac High School.  Kicked in college at Pitt, where he's the school's all-time kick scoring leader and leader in field goals made.  He was signed briefly by the Chicago Bears in  2019.  He's yet to kick in a regular season NFL game.

Welcome.  Kick them straight please.

You all gonna be so mad when Blewitt misses his first few kicks

Hopkins was a sacrificial lamb. Yeah he struggles, but he also doesn't play defense or QB - this teams biggest issues.

This was another marketing move to get the fanabse (all 12 of us) to talk about this team.

It's a little unfair that they replaced his snapper, who was damn near perfect. Cheeseman has been suspect, at best. Kicking is about timing and rhythm. Coaching staff deserves some blame for the unnecessary move. Hopkins will now go and be successful somewhere else because that is the fate of former WFT kickers. His shot at making the HOF just skyrocketed.

Never forget that we would have been 7-3 in 2016 if Hopkins didn't blow the game in England.  Also lost to Dallas the following week on Thanksgiving by 5 points.  Hopkins missed two field goals in that game.

Isnt it same year we missed a kick vs Cincinnati for the win?

The London game that @DJHJR86 referred to is the Cincinnati game where he missed the kick.

Mrs. Skinsfan was ready to fire him right then and there, (we were at the game), and told everyone who would listen that "he wouldn't even be allowed to get on the team plane" afterwards....

Qb is an issue but not the biggest.

The biggest issue is 6 or 7 straight years with the number one pick being on defense and the defense being horrible

If it’s all on his center and no time with him then going to another team with a new holder and snapper will make him even worse….

Anyone thinking we should have kept Hopkins has bumped their head. Now I think Lambo would have been a great pick up. But I'm okay literally with anyone including my 4 year old daughter over Hopkins. Only problem with this move is that it should have happened a long time ago.
