A good running back is one who knows his role, and completes it.

Barber was a specialist who completed his role.

He was asked to get 1st Downs, and to score points. Which he did. That is far more important than overall YPC, especially for someone with a very specific role.

I have no reason to think that Gibson cant get a 1st down and score points in those same situations. While also not limiting or tipping your hand to the defense switching out players.

The only thing Peyton had that Gibson didn't (doesn't?) was short area vision, basically experience.

Gibson is stronger, bigger, more agile faster and runs more violently than Barber did.

Gibsons vision has gotten better every game he's imo, basically showing me his issue was experience (and coaching) not innate ability.

Is.... is he good?

Update:

Pineiro, 5-11, 190 pounds, was signed by the Colts on May 17, 2021. He has played in 16 career games in his time with the Chicago Bears (2019-20) and Raiders (2018) and has converted 23-of-28 field goals (82.1 percent) and 27-of-29 extra points (93.1 percent) for 96 points. Pineiro was originally signed by the Raiders as an undrafted free agent on May 4, 2018.

What is the point t of having a kicker on your practice squad?

Legit question because I don't understand it.

He can be poached at any time from any team so how is that different than him just being a free agent?

Are there good reasons to want to have a kicker on the squad earlier than necessary for training purposes?

We were able to call him up should the gameplan or need arise, on active roster or not.

We need another big body back from somewhere moving forward

I don't think we could do that without cutting someone else. Why would we cut someone and promote Barber just to gain 2 yards per run?

Same reason we kept him on the PS. Same reason the Raiders took him. Yards do not come easy when the whole stadium knows your running the ball. That was 85% of Barber's carries.

2 YPC vs stacked boxes aint bad, its the opposite.

If you gotta cut someone and move them to the PS, then hey... that's football

If you injury designate someone, then you don't have to cut anyone. Somebody will stub a toe/get sick or something within the next week. Problem solved

Short yardage backs usage rate fluctuate wildly. They can have a game where they get 1 touch, or a game where they get 7-10. Many of those looks come against jumbo packages.

As it stands we don't have anyone on the roster or PS anymore who we would want to expose them to, or can reliably physically withstand, the high end of that spectrum of carnage.

Gibby and Thomas can give you a couple, but I'm not taking the crux of my O and ramming them into jumbo packages several times a game. They are too valuable to risk.

Need someone who is capable of absorbing that kind of punishment.

It gives him time to acclimated to our snapper and holder. And it basically costs you nothing. It was necessary. Hopkins has struggled this preseason.

I realize Barber is what he is and not many are going to be impressed. I love Gibson but he is still learning the nuances of the position and it would be nice when we need that yard to have a rb with experience able to get it. Obviously JD is not that guy and Paterson is a rook.

I hope we can sign a veteran rb to the PS in case someone gets hurt or isn’t getting it done.

It's not like Barber is some 250lb battering ram. Gibson weighs the same or more than he does. Barber was listed at 225 last season and he apparently slimmed down so he's probably closer to 215-220 now which is what Gibson weighs.

I certainly understand not wanting to sacrifice your starting backs but tell me which of our 53 you'd be willing to cut just to promote a short yardage back for a game or two where he may or may not actually serve a purpose. And this is cut, not deactivate.

Clearly the coaches and FO didn't see Barber as that important a piece to the puzzle and believe they can get what they need out of the guys they have.

How, exactly, was Barber going to punch it in for us from the PS? Reality truly is dead for so many. This should factor at about a .2 on the 10 point give a **** scale for fans. Good luck to Barber. Positive impact here in that if Gibson misses time it ensures Patterson will actually get the ball and a chance to grow and prove himself rather than us elevating Barber who’s at his ceiling and would steal those potential reps. Win win for us and Barber.
