The FBI has found scant evidence that the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was the result of an organized plot to overturn the presidential election result, according to four current and former law enforcement officials.

 

Though federal officials have arrested more than 570 alleged participants, the FBI at this point believes the violence was not centrally coordinated by far-right groups or prominent supporters of then-President Donald Trump, according to the sources, who have been either directly involved in or briefed regularly on the wide-ranging investigations.

 

"Ninety to ninety-five percent of these are one-off cases," said a former senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. "Then you have five percent, maybe, of these militia groups that were more closely organized. But there was no grand scheme with Roger Stone and Alex Jones and all of these people to storm the Capitol and take hostages."

Capitol Police officer who shot Ashli Babbitt exonerated in internal probe

 

The Capitol Police officer who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt outside a door of the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot has been formally exonerated after an internal investigation, according to a department memo obtained by NBC News.

 

The officer, whose name has not been released, opened fire on Babbitt as she and a mob of other Trump supporters tried to forcefully enter the Capitol.

 

Video of the shooting showed Babbitt in front of a crowd of rioters trying to get through a door leading to where members of Congress were being evacuated on the House side of the building.

 

The Justice Department announced in April that no charges were being brought against the officer. The exoneration by the Capitol Police wraps up the last remaining investigation into the incident.

I can't hardly believe this. What about the Capitol tours in the days before? And who gave them the plans inside the Capitol building? And wasn't Alex Jones inside the Capitol building? There had to be some sort of coordination. Maybe Roger Stone wasn't involved directly inside the building. And what about Trump egging on the march to the Capitol? Obviously I still have lots of questions. And why aren't all those inside the Capitol building arrested on felony charges? 

 

I'm very mad about this whole thing.

Investigators get info from iCloud account of Gravette man in U.S. Capitol breach

 

The whereabouts of Richard "Bigo" Barnett's cellphone have been somewhat of a mystery since he visited the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 and propped his feet on a desk in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office.

 

But federal prosecutors may not need it after all.

 

They've gotten information from Barnett's iCloud account, according to a filing Friday in federal court in the District of Columbia.

 

"Please note that we also wish to provide you with information received pursuant to the warrant for your client's iCloud account," Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary L. Dohrmann wrote in a letter emailed to Barnett's attorney, Joseph McBride of New York City.

 

The letter was filed in the court record along with a "notice of discovery."

 

McBride couldn't be reached for comment Friday.

 

Barnett, 61, of Gravette faces seven charges in connection with the Capitol riot, including one accusing him of carrying a dangerous weapon into the building that day. That weapon was a ZAP Hike 'N Strike 950,000 Volt Stun Gun Walking Stick that Barnett bought at Bass Pro Shop in Rogers, according to authorities.

There’s an English book called Uncommon Law by AP Herbert (a play on English Common Law) which involves 66 fake and misleading legal cases.

 

All the ‘cases’ are full of silliness and this Sovereign Citizen clown reminded me of one case before the Admiralty Court when a car driving on a flooded roadway collided with someone in a kayak. The question was whether road traffic law or the laws of the sea should apply.

 

One of my favorite quotes from the ‘case’ …

 

”The evidence of Mr X was most unsatisfactory, and if he thought by singing snatches of sea-shanties he would commend himself to the Admiralty Court he was mistaken.”

House committee plans to seek phone records in probe of January 6, including from members of Congress

 

The House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot is poised to send notices to various telecommunications companies requesting that they preserve the phone records of several people, including members of Congress, multiple sources tell CNN.

 

Preserving communications records is the first step in an investigatory process that could eventually lead to witness testimony. The notices are set to go out as soon as this week and provide the first window into the kinds of information the committee plans to pursue.

Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson, who serves as chairman of the Select Committee, has said that he hopes to issue subpoenas by the end of August. Thompson also has signed off on a broader investigative strategy that will serve as a guide for the panel's work going forward, according to a source familiar with the planning document.

While it remains unclear which members' records the committee is interested in, several Republican lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and GOP Rep. Jim Jordan, have acknowledged speaking to then-President Donald Trump by phone on January 6.

Democrats have also accused some of their GOP colleagues of interacting with individuals who stormed the US Capitol prior to the attack.

In an interview with CNN on Monday, Thompson confirmed the committee was poised to send letters to telecom companies but also indicated they would be sent to social media companies, though he declined to name which ones.

"In terms of telecom companies, they're the ones that pretty much you already know, the major networks, the social media platforms, those kinds of things," Thompson told CNN on Monday.

Justice Department offers plea deal to Capitol rioter who wore 'Camp Auschwitz' sweatshirt

 

The Justice Department has offered a plea deal to the US Capitol rioter who wore a "Camp Auschwitz" sweatshirt, prosecutors said Tuesday at a court hearing.

 

Robert Packer of Virginia went viral during the January 6 attack because of the brazenly anti-Semitic nature of his sweatshirt. He was arrested in January and charged with two misdemeanors. He has pleaded not guilty, but prosecutors said Tuesday that they offered him a deal to plead guilty.

Prosecutors didn't provide details about the offer. But similarly situated rioters, who were only charged with low-level crimes and aren't accused of any violence, have pleaded guilty to a single misdemeanor count of illegally demonstrating inside the Capitol.

That crime could lead to a six-month jail sentence, though many defendants could receive much less than that.

 

The plea offer is part of a larger effort by the Justice Department to resolve the low-level cases in the Capitol riot. Hundreds of people are only charged with trespassing-style offenses. While hundreds of others are accused of much more serious crimes -- like assaulting police officers, conspiracy, or bringing weapons to the Capitol -- and some have said they want to go to trial.

During the brief hearing in DC District Court, Packer's defense attorney said he needed more time to discuss the potential plea bargain with his client. The next hearing is slated for October.
