Kimberly Alford didn’t think twice about posting a photo of her 15-year-old daughter Kayla Kenney blowing out candles on a rainbow birthday cake.

“She looked so happy,” Alford told TODAY Parents. “I just wanted to share that.”

The picture in question would ultimately lead to Kenney’s expulsion from Whitefield Academy in Louisville, Kentucky.

Last week, Alford was contacted by the Christian institution’s head of school, Dr. Bruce Jacobson, informing her that Kenney would have to finish her freshman year somewhere else.

“The WA Administration has been made aware of a recent picture, posted on social media, which demonstrates a posture of morality and cultural acceptance contrary to that of Whitefield Academy’s beliefs,” Jacobson’s email read in part. “Per our in-person meeting on October 17, 2019, we made it clear that any further promotion, celebration, or any other actions and attitudes that are counter to Whitefield’s philosophy would not be tolerated.”

In the letter, Jacobson attached the Facebook picture, which shows Kenney in a rainbow sweater posing next to her rainbow cake. While rainbow flag is a symbol of LGTBQ pride, Kenney was not making a statement about her sexuality. Alford was the one who ordered cake.

“The school pinned Kayla as gay,” Alford said. Alford, a dental assistant, claims that after Kenney got an undercut, Whitefield Academy administration told her she could no longer wear ponytails. She said they also gave Kenney a book by Jackie Hill-Perry, a Christian activist who writes about how she stopped being gay when she found God.

The girl likes rainbows! This is why I don't believe in religion, specifically the far right orthodox ones that seek to demand people follow stupid rules. ****ing control freaks!

There is nothing in the bible about rainbow cake.

The only foods I know God hates are Spam and Mac'n'Cheese.  Everywhere people who eat them are scourged by tornadoes.

This can't be right.  Hawaiians love Spam and they rarely get tornadoes.

BTW, you're not god, delusions aside that is.  :)

Genesis 9:12-13 (Noah’s Ark story)

And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

Admiring the fact that she's being kicked out because her social media picture "a posture of morality and cultural acceptance contrary to that of Whitefield Academy’s beliefs", and they think that her "posture of morality and cultural acceptance" is that she's in favor of them.  (And they're not.)

“Inaccurate media reports are circling stating that the student in question was expelled from our school solely for a social media post,” a spokesperson told TODAY Parents in a statement. “In fact, she has unfortunately violated our student code of conduct numerous times over the past two years.”

Alford doesn’t deny that Kenney has had disciplinary issues, noting that her child cut lunch and was caught with a vape. But she insists Kenney has been on the right track since they had a sit-down meeting with administration in October.<<<

I think it was more of accumulation of past transgressions.  When they saw that photo, they said she was gay and got rid of her.

Why opened minded people send their kids to Christian schools is beyond me.  Of course they are intolerant to anything real or perceived against their so called beliefs. The girl is better off, not being polluted with religious bigotry.

Frankly, it's time to remove any tax benefits for religious schools and houses of worship in general.

And yet, the expulsion letter mentioned exactly one reason for the expulsion.

But he did balance it out by adding a prostitute to the posse.

Church admitted they over exaggerated that to diminish her role in early Christianity and close relationship with Jesus, who was "supposed" to be damn near perfect.  Over exaggerated as in flat out lied and intentionally misinterpreted.

I like how the school tries to clarify that they expelled her because over a social media post being the last straw and now doing public real-time character assassination of a teenager to defend themselves.

I dont need anymore info for the improper religious interpretation angle of this conversation.  Where id like to see this thread go to keep this honest is a conversation about zero tolerance in US school systems that affects secular public schools as well and now possible privacy violations to expand it.

This thread will get wasted if it stays a religion fish in a barrel type conversation.  Not my thread, jus my opinion.  How much longer until public schools start trying to defend their actions because of what Jamal or Stacy posts on Instagram or Snapchat?  Unintended consequence of social media but actually already happening:

What if someone posts something that is offensive language, racist, sexist?

  • AMY HARTJEN:

    Absolutely.

  • LISA STARK:

Really? And why would that be a red line?

  • AMY HARTJEN:

Because that is just — it's against the campus culture.

  • LISA STARK:

Students threatening to harm others or themselves sometimes telegraph that on social media, and districts have been sued for not paying attention to online posts.

These days, the schoolyard has new boundaries.

Earlier in the interview mentions at least 10 folks at one time losing chance to Harvard because of something they posted.  Topics like this are made for ACLU when meant to do that the right thing, but what's that exactly?

Public schools and private school are on a completely different plane. This isn’t one of those infamous slippery slope deals, @Renegade7.  Private schools should have a lot more leeway in deciding what is acceptable for their members to do outside of class.  Public schools should have almost no say.

I disagree with this straight line approach.  I can understand looking at social media for red flags that can lead to school shootings, regardless of public or private.

But do they jus look at every student until they find something they dont like or actually listen to students screaming at the school about what someone is posting as a clear warning sign?

That's different, I dont believe even private schools should have the right to use social media as a means of constantly monitoring their student body.  Especially if its jus to find a way to kick a kid out versus trying to protect them.

Zero tolerance prevents some very important questions and conversations from taking place.
