The 7-day average is still declining in the U.S.  It’s now under 150k a day.  For context, it was 241k a month ago.  A good sign, but still a ways to go.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't attribute that to vaccines, either. I doubt there's a bough of them to move the needle yet.

I'm going to assume it's the breaking of the holiday surge. And the vaccines will reduce it further, 3-4 months from now.

I'm guessing in about 2-3 weeks we will get proof either way.  SB parties should lead to higher cases. Thr cue will be the offset (if any) that vaccinations have had.

No, I don’t think it’s directly tied to vaccines either.  The Holiday bump peeked in the second week of Jan when the 7-day average was a shade under 290k.  But we are under where we were pre-Christmas which is a good sign.

BTW, JHU now tracks vaccines administered which is pretty cool.  Still a lot of work to do.

The decline is not because of vaccines... the decline is following the modeling which was pretty consistent going back late October/November.  Things were supposed to peak late January/early February and then decline. Region specific models are more helpful and useful here. But generally this is what was expected

not saying the vaccines don’t help. But also my understanding is there is quite a lag time between  second shot and true effectiveness. But that may be specific to which one you get

On coronavirus vaccines, Maryland makes West Virginia look good as pace still lags most states, analysis finds

However, the U.S. government doles out doses based on states’ populations, and federal health data shows Maryland hasn’t efficiently administered its allotment compared with other states.

Maryland’s reliance on counties in the rollout is partially to blame for the pace, found an analysis by the Brookings Institution, a research group based in Washington, D.C.

New Israeli Covid drug which cured 30 cases of disease hailed by scientists as 'huge breakthrough'

A new coronavirus drug which successfully cured 30 cases of the disease in Israeli hospital patients has been hailed by scientists as a ‘huge breakthrough’.

The EXO-CD24 substance was developed at the Ichilov Medical Centre in Tel Aviv and successfully completed its first phase of clinical trials on Friday.

The treatment was given to 30 patients with coronavirus, whose conditions ranged from moderate to severe.

Twenty-nine of the patients were then discharged from the hospital in the following three to five days, while one patient took slightly longer to recover.

A protein known as CD24 is delivered to the lungs by exosomes in the drug, which helps to rebalance the immune system and prevent it from overreacting to the virus.

Professor Nadir Arber originally designed EXO-CD24, which is breathed in as a gas and taken once every five days, in order to treat patients who had ovarian cancer.

“Even if the vaccines do their job, and even if there aren't any new mutations, one way or another, the coronavirus will be staying with us,” Prof Arber told the news site Arutz Sheva.

Since January 24, the number of active coronavirus cases in California has dropped from 1,727,000 to 1,678,000. This doesn't sound like a lot, it's only about 3%, but the last two weeks have been our ONLY period of steady decline in terms of active cases during the entire pandemic. You can observe plateauing and individual days of decline, but not entire weeks of it.

The effect of the vaccines is very real and it has become apparent quickly. When they say we're vaccinating more people than are being infected, that's what the numbers should look like.

Ive seen this pop back up recently in more and more places, so I thought I’d share it. It’s very interesting and frightening. Would not shock me at all. Now that this is out there I wonder how it would inform us in defending against it. It’s obvious that this whole issue needs a spotlight and transparency, regardless wether in nature or lab.

I’m always open to new facts, revealing the truth. It definitely sounds plausible. But until they get into China and find out, it’s all moot. Not sure if that is gonna happen. The Chinese response does not engender any comfort regarding where this came from and may point to the answer itself. Realistically behind the scenes we need to be working the assumption that both are possible and likely and see who wins out. Will there be enough impartial experts to widdle down what’s fact and what’s fiction?
What a mess..this only adds to the frustration of what we face currently.

The prob with both investigative teams, is the presence of the one dude (Daszack?) lots of these people have flourished in getting to do there work regardless of what anyone thinks ethically. There is a conflict of interest issue here. So I’m not sure/confident what either investigation is going to reveal. He’s on both teams. Not to mention China is not gonna just open up all doors and info to them. So I’m not encouraged about the hope of finding real answers.

Depressing to say but PCS article is a "great read".  People don't realize the strong undercurrent of "MAGA bubbles" in Southern California.  Regardless, I don't get it.  They claim and repeat the claim that "99.8 percent of people who get COVID have no long term effect" and act like since a majority of the folks who die of it have underlying conditions (age, weak immune system, overweight) its their own fault for dying and "I am not afraid of COVID."  Do you drunk drive and say "I am not afraid of driving drunk". Yes, COVID is not something society chose to happen... and everyone's life is impacted.  It doesn't mean you meet with denial.

Maybe related, maybe not...my wife was telling me how at the advent of computers, some Christians treated computers like the "mark of the beast" (early 1980s).  She was recently talking to someone at church in her 60s explaining she feels so stupid now about that believe and how stupid she is with computers... and how she was a fool to think that way.

We are hosting 2 households today for the Super Bowl... one we have been in a bubble with the whole time, the other family we are close to but my friend is more risk averse.  I let him know I understood if he didn't join us (even though other members of his household will join.)  Everyone has to balance risk and life and try to make smart decisions.

Way more women are reporting ‘long-haul’ covid symptoms. Doctors aren’t sure why.

It’s been a year since neuroscientist and neurologist Dona Kim Murphey came down with covid-19.

In February 2020, she began suffering sudden and extreme bouts of drowsiness. She struggled through vision changes, mild breathing problems, chest discomfort, a rash, a sour stomach. For one day, she experienced severe abdominal pain.

“I literally thought that was the moment I was going to die,” Kim Murphey said, adding that she gathered her family to express that she wanted a do-not-resuscitate order.

Once she got better, about a month passed. Then she contracted a secondary bacterial infection that sent her to the hospital. After undergoing a strong antibiotic regimen for about four weeks, she recovered to about 85 percent of her baseline health, she said.

In August, she suffered a steep decline. She and her neurologist believe she suffered a small MRI-negative stroke and alien hand syndrome, preventing the 41-year-old from having control over one of her hands. She’s had trouble writing and speaking since then.

“I would think that I had written something brilliantly and put it out there in an email or on social media, and then I would come back to it to reread it and it was rife with errors,” she said.

Kim Murphey is one of a growing number of covid-19 “long-haulers” — post-covid patients with symptoms that persist or recur beyond the initial onset of the disease. Like so much having to do with the novel coronavirus, much is unknown.

But like in Kim Murphey’s case, reports of the condition seem especially prevalent among women.

Though the symptoms vary widely — which is part of the problem — many cite exhaustion, shortness of breath, coughing, muscle or joint pain, chest pain, headaches, fast or pounding heartbeats, a loss or change in taste or smell, insomnia, and problems with memory or concentration. Some report hair loss, rashes, blood clots, and organ damage in the heart, lungs or brain.

The body of knowledge around long-haulers is still forming and often fragmented. Still, some doctors say they see a clear gender disparity in patients being treated for post-covid conditions, an observation that is in line with women facing higher rates of chronic conditions overall.

More from the anti-masker front:

Ohio woman actually named Karen busted for refusing to wear mask

An anti-masker actually named Karen was caught on video resisting arrest for refusing to wear a face covering inside an Ohio supermarket — and snapping at cops, “I can’t wait to sue your ass,” according to a report.

Karen Turner, 55, was asked to leave the Marc’s Deeper Discount in Brook Park on Jan. 18 because she was in violation of its mask policy, Jam Press reported.

The woman refused to leave, so store employees finally called the police.

“So let me ask you this. Is it a law? What’s a federal law that prevents me from wearing a face mask?” Turner asks the cops as she holds up her cell phone to record the encounter.

When the officers explain that it’s not federal law but a state order, she replies: “OK, so you don’t know the law!” She then demands their badge numbers.

After she refused to provide ID, the officers escorted Turner out of the store as she is seen resisting and saying, “I can’t wait to sue your ass.”

The officers took Turner’s phone and placed the handcuffed woman in a patrol car, where one of the cops reached in to take her purse, causing her to begin thrashing.

Co-Owner Of Alibi Drinkery Accused Of Slapping Fast Food Worker For Enforcing Mask Rules

Investigators say the co-owner of a bar fined for not following COVID rules slapped a fast-food worker for enforcing them.

Ricardo Baldazo is part-owner of Alibi Drinkery in Lakeville, which opened several times despite state restrictions.

He’s charged with assault

.

On Facebook, the woman — Alibi co-owner Lisa Monet Zarza — commented on the incident.

“I walked into Jimmy John’s to order food. I was asked if I had a mask. I informed the man (19 yes [sic] old, not a child as some people think it was) that I have a health condition that makes me unable to wear a mask. I was told to leave. I informed him it was against my constitutional right to refuse to serve me A BASIC HUMAN NEED SUCH AS FOOD. He told me to leave … He started swearing at me … At 19 years old, he is old enough to serve. Old enough to know you do not speak to a woman that way over a mask. His parents should have raised him better.”

The attorney respresenting the manager released the following statement:

“I represent the individual that was slapped by Ricardo Baldazo, a co-owner of Alibi Drinkery. My client asked Lisa Monet Zarza to put on a mask while inside my client’s workplace. She refused. (video of which is posted in a prior video) Inexplicably, Ricardo Baldazo immediately escalates the situation and ends up slapping my client. My client wants to thank the Rosemount Police Department for their work and communication on this incident. As a result of their work, Mr. Baldazo has been charged with fifth degree misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct. My client is hopeful that Mr. Baldazo’s bail is revoked so no one else is put at risk by this individual.”
