Keep being patient with guys and you end up being a fan of a loser franchise.

He was slow off the jump, put little or no pressure on the QB (I’m not expecting any sacks right now). It is the one thing we drafted him for. He just looked slow.

We need more guys like McLaurin. Guys that play fast and make immediate impact. Guys that look like they belong. We don’t need guys who take time to develop (excuses).

If you are a rush specialist, it should show immediately. Sacks can come later, but he shouldn’t need “time” to look fast or get a quick jump off.

Like I said, in game 1, he looked like a wasted pick.

McLaurin for example, looked like a great pick in game 1.

Not that difficult to see who performed and who didn’t in game 1

So you'd be furious that they totally wasted 2 second round picks but think the team would be smart to cut him right now?

I mean after all he's looking like a wasted pick right, and if the fans shouldn't bother showing any semblance of patience why should the team?

No reason to wait, just rip the bandaid off as quickly as possible and bring in some undrafted rookie nobody gave a chance to and see if he "LOOKS" like Lawrence Taylor game one and if not, rinse and repeat.

Yeah that sounds like a recipe for success.

Does this sound any more ridiculous now that it's typed out in black and white?

I too would be much happier if he had 4 sacks or even a bunch of pressures but to say he looks like a wasted pick after one unproductive game is so ridiculous it borders on insanity.

He really wasn't hustling to the ball either; particularly in second half.

Was he not hustling or was he thinking through his assignments? From what we heard, there were a number of plays where there was defensive confusion and Sweat may have been a half step slow because he was unsure of the play or just hasn't gotten to the point where he trusts himself to act purely on instinct and muscle memory when the ball is snapped.

You mean the team who actually goes to the playoffs and has a better history on hitting on their draft picks? Yes, they actually are smarter than this team. So I would agree.

Don’t forget, also the team that traded with the Skins in order to obtain the pick to draft Lawrence.  Who did the Skins draft with the later pick in the 2nd round that Dallas gave up?  Trent Murphy 😭

Stop acting dumb. He literally was about to be cut until he developed in his 4th year. Not everyone dominates right out of the gate.

I am absolutely confident if Demarcus came here, he would NOT have developed. For some reason, this coaching staff struggles to develop players.

I can’t think of one player who has started off slow and turned into an elite level talent at their position under Gruden.

With the record of this coaching staff, I think a person would have to be blind or stupid not to realize this.

This is exactly why our team sucks. We don’t know how to draft talent. They either have injury histories, are JAGs, aren’t talented at all or are slow to ****ing develop and if they do happen to develop (rarely has it happened under this staff), its too late other parts of the team fall behind.

If you ever want a good team, then our players need to develop fast (oh also new owners, GM and staff) otherwise you’ll continue to defend a loser of a franchise.

I will clarify so people don’t get easily confused.

1. Would I cut Sweat after one game? My answer is no.

2. Did he look like a wasted picked after one game? My answer is yes in game one, he did not live up to the hype.

3. Do I need him to get a ton of sacks in his first game? My answer is no, but he needs to show more speed, which is the reason why we drafted him

4. So what concerned me about his performance in game 1? He looked slow. A rookie shouldn’t need game experience to get faster. You either have it or your don’t

5. We don’t need him to be a Ryan Kerrigan, whom I like, we need him to be better. We need a guy who causes havoc. Someone who gets sacks sure but moreso a speed guy who is constantly in the face of the QB making him uncomfortable.

6. Obviously I would give him the entire year and not just 1 game, but if shows little signs of speed the rest of the way, I would be worried. We don’t need another Preston Smith only to realize 4 years later he isn’t who we hoped he would be and then cut or lose him for nothing.

A team that sucks, needs to draft better players right off the bat or develop them faster so they can make an immediate impact. How many years are we going to “just wait and see” for guys to show us something we hope for but never get. (Crowder, Preston, Anderson, Fabian, Moses, Trent Murphy etc).

Your speaking more logically in this last post than the earlier ones.

This I agree with, you can be at least a little concerned with things you see as early as game one, but you also elaborated that he should be given more time before serious concerns set in.

I will say this also, I agree that it would be nice to get elite level talent and we do desperately need that, but it's not as easy as it sounds.

For every Khalil mack there's ten preston smiths.

Hopefully we hit the lottery on a few of these guys eventually.

So I'm no expert but I watched Sweat closely during the preseason and of course in game one and I've been confused by how he was playing, not that he was playing bad but it looked like he was trying to conform to a playing style that is foreign to him but what do I know.

So I listened to Cooley's podcast and I heard him and Portis also question what the coaches are asking Sweat to do.

Sweat was taken with the 26th pick not in the top 5. If he’s as good as Preston or a little more that’s still a successful player. Preston got paid handsomely this offseason.

This too.

And there's the fact that we obviously asked him to put on 20 lbs because he's way thicker than he was in college.

He's trying to adapt his game to his new body.

He was blazingly fast but also too lanky for the pros, had he not adapted he'd probably be getting pushed around, and would be more likely to get hurt.

@dyst there's a lot of overreaction on the ES boards, but you win. For you to honestly say the Sweat pick was wasted after only his first nfl game is as ignorant as it gets.

Give me the 80% price discount on the younger, higher-upside player every day.

I get what you're saying and it's totally way too early to write off sweat... Preston Smith made plays he made a certain play that won a certain game against a certain team will be playing this week..

Some of you need to look more carefully at the scheme before we criticize the player.  We are running the most vanilla of defensive schemes, especially upfront.  We are making it as easy as possible for opposing QBs.  Look back at the tape on the third and long situations where Philly converted (either first downs or long TDs).  You will essentially see a three man rush with everyone dropped into soft zones.  No stunting up front no blitzes with any imagination, no disguise of what's coming.  A huge, huge part of the lack of production from the D-line relates to the positions they have been put in.

The word I would use on Sweat is "stiff".  I'm not about to throw him over the cliff like dyst, but he certainly hasn't appeared special in the brief time we've seen him doing what they have him trying to do.

Yep.  It's the worst take of the week with a chance to go down as worst of the year.  It deserves a place in the Extremeskins Brain Trust Hall of Fame.

I think the problem I have with the whole thing is that he, much like Doctson (& now Guice) weren't forced to earn their way into the game.  What happened to getting a vet in there that will push them for competition, until they're ready?  Maybe because we're still drafting for immediate roster gaps instead of longterm roster replenishment?

I vividly remember Sean Taylor making freakish plays in the preseason, and STILL not starting game 1.

I understand Sweat was injured, but even when he was available, since Gruden knew he was starting day 1, so he couldn't risk him to injury.  In reality, playing him in the preseason would've been best for his development.

We're going to have this problem for as long as we treat these guys as saviors.

McLauren didn't play in preseason either. It can go both ways.

I was disappointed in Sweat too but he had a tough matchup in his first ever game going up against a very good Eagle OL. Lets have some patience.

You may be right. in ALL of ES history, that could very well have been the most ignorant post ever BUT, regardless, I have little patience for players anymore. I am no longer willing to make excuses for this team, this staff and certainly not the players. I refuse to be an enabler. Others can be, but I won't.  Put up or shut up. I would rather be wrong than right on this.

EDIT: More so than the players, I blame the scheme/coaching. Get them the **** out of here so guys like Sweat have some hope of developing.

Premature on both sides.

Receiver is a tough position to make a real impact in a rookie season.  They usually run out of steam due to the higher number of games, or teams adjust to what they're doing once the film is out there.  And unless he's just *that* good, I'd bet he probably would've been better off getting the game experience and developing, versus catching a couple of defenses off guard in the beginning of the season.

I think us throwing these guys in there like that, is more of a function of our own desperation, than their actual readiness to contribute.

Von Miller had the exact same stats, except without the TFL, in his first NFL game.

Wasted pick.

He looks really stiff, which is concerning because I thought he was billed as a fluid athlete coming out.

McKinzy has that kind of athleticism that is disruptive. Hope Sweat can bring that out soon

Watching his college tape, he was quite fluid when he was pinning his ears back and rushing the passer. I think he is a fluid athlete. But I'm guessing that he's still doing a lot of thinking about assignments, etc while he's out there now so that can translate into a guy who isn't naturally stiff looking a bit stiff I'd think. Just give him a bit of time; I'd like to see how he looks by mid-season.
