The Official ES All Things Redskins Name Change Thread (Reboot Edition---Read New OP)

Following the Wizards helped me better understand and appreciate the perspective of the players in their new home.

Especially if they decide they want to stay, raise kids in our schools, promise to do us proud and bring a championship parade here, and constantly in the community for volunteer work.

The Wizards and folks like Wall and Beal have gone out of their way with this, so they can call themselves the Wizards instead of Bullets if they want, they take pride in the same area I'm from so I want them to do well.

The Redskins are supposed to be doing the same thing, we just don't see or hear about it as often.  If the franchise does actually want to represent us when it goes out there on a national level, that has to matter more then the name.

How the franchise decides to rebuild this fan base and not embarrass us in every way imaginable is a million times more important then the name.  If the name is more important then that, I'm not sure what to tell you.

The NBA is better at this then NFL is from a visibility standpoint, we shouldn't have to wait for the rest of the NFL to catch up to that. Real opportunity here to turn this thing around off the football field, and that's fair considering this name issue is in the tailgate instead of stadium for a reason.

I honestly do not get it, you all stick with the team through the high and lows and now most of you are leaving because of a name change?

You don't get it.  You are correct.  Listen to first hour of Czabe yesterday.  He speaks for me and countless other long time fans.

I listened to Darrell Green and Jansen on 106.7 and they essentially have said they don’t care the name means nothing to them.

I think what that implies is that they care about people more than they do about a name. I read it as, Green/Jansen have respect for NA's as a people more than the Redskin name. I find that commendable, more than if they were think of it backwards.

It’s amusing to watch people argue that their favorite little bits of history are destroyed by this innocuous change that literally affects nothing but the future and the respond to that argument by saying fine then **** the **** my past feelings lol

its like saying you can’t fire me if I quit

Right. I bleed burgundy and gold but only if that’s also associated with this name otherwise **** that ****

I empathize with them. I really do. Frankly it's worse for me because I'm 32 and never got to see any legendary play (I'm at least thankful for the few Division Titles we won).

But I never feel attached to any one particular tangible item when it comes to stuff like this. There are so many positive moments,  and they don't get erased because you can't say it anymore.

The only thing that's on the verge of being erased is the hold that this team had over this region, and that's because of just shameful ownership.  Yet we all stayed and cheered through it.

With this, it will likely have the opposite effect, as more people will be open to the possibility of cheering, without having to deal with an offensive team name.

Interesting point brought up the other day on WTEM 980: Anyone ever stop to think about how many native americans were murdered by "Cowboys?"

Cowboys isn't a racial slur, we'll be taking down statues of Founding Fathers if we go this route, limo.

Pretty sure it was also co-opted by fantastical authors who wanted to dramatize the "Wild West"

As far I know, an actual cowboy was basically a cattle herder for the most part. I dont think Bandits herded or farmed anything. Hence the name bandits.

Probably thinking more about bounty hunters or the military, getting in firefights and slaughters during westward expansion

So who is this franchise because where are the name leaks?? Usually we would have all the leaks by now haha.. Its still Ashburn correct ? Lol

I suspect Bruce and his elves were planting many of those leaks.

Snyder got rid of Bruce and Rivera seems to have ferreted out most of the elves.

Can we please have a conversation on why Redtails is not a good name for a football team without it being another front in a culture war?

First, geographically it makes no sense.  Second, I don't see any reason to honor another group of people, war heroes or not.  Third, I really don't see the need to honor the military in the name either, granted that was reported as what they wanted to try and do.

Washington Football Club please.  Every name offends someone.  Plain burgundy and gold.  I'd rather my team have no name than changed from Redskins to another name.

funny...but I think I would take that name...I know its just a name,  football team and just a game but it really has meant more than that to me through my life time...sad but true...I can't help it...I hope I feel better and can still be a fan of this team mostly because I will miss all of the camaraderie, we shall see...

Bloody hell Dan pick a name fast will you :ols:

I actually think he and Rivera have picked the name(s) they want. The issue appears to be that the name they want most is tied up in trademark litigation.

Which would seem to suggest that RedWolves is their preferred name as there is a yet to be adjudicated lawsuit between Arkansas State and the Chattanooga Redwolves soccer team for breach of that trademark.

another logic buster for the people who cant understand why the name matters so much and fans may move on after the change.

why do you think the ravens were allowed to move to Baltimore only after they agreed to leave the name all imagery and history in Cleveland?

if it didn't matter the commissioner wouldn't have made that a stipulation.

"Package Handlers" sounds as almost as pornographic as "Extremeskins."

technically there's already a team in green bay with that name.

Baltimore lost the Colts imagery and name to Indianapolis.

Or do you think the aftermath of the Colts leaving Baltimore is what caused Cleveland to be able to retain the Browns name.

Animal is safer we will offend people, also we are simply doing something to pander to the current climate. Its a football team. Lets not make it a political thing again!

Ok, you don't want to be a mascot, fine. Lets correct this then. Minorities are not mascots--because there are a ****-ton of white people mascots that no one gives a **** about.

Besides the The Tuskegee Airmen love the name...yeah...Imma stop there and say lets not go with Redtails.

Those are the best uniforms I've seen--nice, classic, clean looking. Logo can use a bit of work--I like the snarling, front facing logo. But wouldn't be mad at that one
