Fan since a Fetus
Did you show him a dictionary? I suggest you do NOT show him a dictionary. No, no dictionary. I think that is how I won the battle. If I had, I would have lost and been very embarrassed as well. its hard for me to imagine, because i'm the type of person to always look at things from another viewpoint- very skeptical. i want to the know that 'how' and 'why' of an issue (mostly to avoid looking like a dumbass ) I am very skeptical as well and for the same reason. If I don't know a subject, I try not to put myself out there too much. I am more likely to ask questions than pretend like I know what I am talking about. RFKFedEx
No respects paid Bang, just some data collected. I share things which I find interesting and relevant to the thread. Lombardi'sKB, a book I read recently painted GPM's relationship w/ Halas as a love/hate affair, a friendly and sometimes heated rivalry. Ugly from the public's perception, but privately GPM was always trying to sniff Halas' jock. Halas had the athletic credibility Marshall coveted, but could never obtain on his own. Back on topic. grego
Oh, I'd bring up the dictionary definition, but explain why it's defined the way it is, as well as showing the myriad examples of common words that Webster defines in obscure, uncommon, often dated terms. Just curious. headstone density, angle of incline of the gravesite, this sort of thing? ~Bang
RFKFedEx
I read a book you recommended in this thread. Seeing the grave (which ended up being literally 5 minutes out of my way) gave me broader perspective on who and what created this thing we all love so much. I'm sorry if the subject of GPM makes you uncomfortable.

Larry
. . . He changed his mind about the name and admitted he was wrong for listening to the media. I was pretty happy about changing his mind. He is a very bright guy. Way smarter than I am, and he was believing what the media led him to believe. . . . Unfortunately, the only reason they were actually even willing to give you the chance to explain things to them, was because they were friends of yours. For every person who will comment on it, and then allow you to explain things, there are probably hundreds (thousands?) who simply look at your shirt, think "racist", but don't say a word. (And wouldn't allow you to explain, if they did.) The media is probably convincing people that it's racist at a rate of thousands of people a day. You do not have the power to change people's minds at that rate.
Kosher Ham
What a tool that guy is... Wait, um. Warthogs and Ridgebacks ? hahahahaha. I would rather call them the Bullets with the Bullets colors if we are considering some of these terrible names including the Football Club crap. More money ? I refuse to buy new gear. I won't be in line stocking up on Warthogs gear that's a certainty. I would stock up on Redskins stuff that isn't even my size to sell. I got enough stuff of my own. Section106
I don't want the name to change. I think Snyder should simply ignore the "controversy" and continue with the outreach. I would like him to direct all his surrogates to reply with something like "It is the name of our football team and we are proud of our traditions, our players, and our community outreach" when asked for comment. The narrative is completely in the media's control right now but if the Original Americans Foundation shows that it is effective and has staying power for years then Snyder will wrest control from Harjo, Halbritter, Wise and the like. Soup's Uncle
How about any description of a human that someone could find offensive? Viking, Buccaneer, Giant, Cowboy, Saint, Raider, Chief, Texan, Titan... I would agree with this, but none of these are commenting on the color of someone's skin. What a tool that guy is... Wait, um. elkabong82
How about any description of a human that someone could find offensive? Viking, Buccaneer, Giant, Cowboy, Saint, Raider, Chief, Texan, Titan... That's the thing. Various media members crusade for a name change that the majority does not support, yet none of them bat an eye at the teams who use known rapists, thieves, and murderers as their mascots (Viking, Buccaneers, Pirates, Raiders, etc.). s0crates
Keep the colors, keep the logo, keep the NA theme, but change the name. I think this would be good, as I do think the time has come for the name to go, but I would hate a complete rebrand. Warriors is okay. I prefer something like Nation or Red Clouds though. Riggo#44
That's the thing. Various media members crusade for a name change that the majority does not support, yet none of them bat an eye at the teams who use known rapists, thieves, and murderers as their mascots (Viking, Buccaneers, Pirates, Raiders, etc.). It's because someone is "offended" which, now, is the worst possible offense ever. Expect a Constitutional Amendment guaranteeing our freedom from offense. And now 50 Senators have signed a petition of some sort urging the Redskins to change their name. http://washington.cbslocal.com/2014/05/22/50-senators-send-letter-to-nfl-urging-redskins-to-change-name/ One interesting tidbit: Virginia Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, both Democrats, did not sign the letter...The Redskins are headquartered in Ashburn and hold training camp in Richmond, the state’s capital. The team’s stadium, FedEx Field is located in Landover, Md. I say fine, change it. But make is SO offensive that people will long for the name Redskins--something that would make Donald Sterling blush.

Riggo#44
What are your "SO offensive" suggestions ? I don't want to get banned... I'm not serious of course, but if they think Redskins is offensive, I'm pretty sure people can come up with something that's actually offensive! Ever see Clerks? Remember this bit? Something like this! Offended Customer: I will never come to this place again! Dante Hicks: Excuse me? Offended Customer: Using filthy language in front of the customers, you both should be fired! Dante Hicks: Oh, I-I'm sorry, I-I guess we kinda got carried away. Offended Customer: Well, I-I don't know if sorry can make up for it. You've highly offended me. Randal Graves: Well, if you thinks that's offensive, check this out! [Shows him graphic picture from porn mag]
Lombardi's_kid_brother
God help us all, but Florio makes a decent point: “The intent of the team’s name has always been to present a strong, positive and respectful image,” the league said in a statement issued to the Times. “The name is not used by the team or the NFL in any other context, though we respect those that view it differently.” And that’s the heart of the dilemma the NFL currently faces. At some point in the past year, the NFL and the franchise have conceded that reasonable minds may differ on whether the name “Redskins” is a slur. Does the league want one of its teams to carry a name on which a fair debate exists and lingers regarding whether the name represents blatant and open racism? The league and team are no longer trying to argue that it is not a slur. They are arguing that it is not intended as a slur, but that seeing it as a slur is a reasonable interpretation. GibbsFactor
We just have to bite the bullet, change the stupid name and move on. Who knows, maybe that damn curse that's apparently been put on us will go away too. Tired of it. Just tired.
@DCGoldPants
I bet more than 100million Americans would sign a letter wanting term limits in the Senate. Just saying. I agree. This is coming. Soon will be threatening to repeal the NFL's antitrust exemption if they don't make the Skins change the name. That will be what puts it over. Say hello to the Washington Warriors. MattFancy
Seems like it's inevitable at this point. A matter of when, not if. I'm still on the side of if the Native Americans are cool with it, so am I.
