The Official ES All Things Redskins Name Change Thread (Reboot Edition---Read New OP)

Maybe I've been watching too much soccer but I wouldn't mind just going by Washington. Or even finding a way to take the name "DC United"

We'd probably still call them the Redskins in conversation. It'd be the unofficial nickname like Reds, Blues, Gunners, Tofees, etc.

Cuz if you change the nickname, ppl are gonna hate it no matter what

Be different and let the city be the focal point

"They were hanging Native Americans in Montana? Dragging them down a road, tied to a truck?"

Gamebreaker, I've NEVER experienced those things in my life. Yes, I know they happened and I'm aware, but I've never personally experienced those things.
In Montana, as I've posted in the Tailgate previously, I witnessed the following:

I lived in Montana for 2 summers while my brother played for the Dodgers minor league team.  I worked as a bartender.  In the bar, I had people say to me personally, "You serve redskins here? I'm leaving" or "Get them people out of here".

I applied for a job at Target in Loss prevention, I got the interview because I had previous experience. I was told directly, "all you have to do is look for the redskins, they are usually drunk and always steal".

In Virginia, I was never told "Look for blacks or hispanics" or look for this.  In my life, I've never experienced blatant out in the open racism like I did there.  In a lot of ways, it has made me call BS on a lot of racism that I read about because its so subtle.  Being asked if you are the homeowner (which I get all the time), not being able to wear a hoodie (which white kids do all the time) etc...

Put it this way....You have to live it.

Until you are routinely stopped by cops while wearing a hoodies and asked if you're a drug dealer by white students because of said hoody (I've had numerous random freshmen come up to me on campus and ask if I have any Molly or weed they could buy) , you won't understand. It's subtle but it's damn sure there. It's not bs, I've experienced all of that at my time at Drexel.

I was once carded at ****ing McDonald's one night lol. Two white Penn kids walked in (in hoodies!!!! Lol) before me and weren't bothered at all.

But that's not the point of this thread

Brave, I believe you, I'm not claiming its not there, I'm only stating what I've seen.

IMO, most people here have never seen the discrimination towards the Indians.  I  had never been anywhere near a reservation.  I had no clue.

Evidently, when the indians from the reservation near Great Falls turn 18 and then 21, they get 100,000 dollars from the government.  They go on wild parties, vacations etc... I did have 2 21 year olds at the bar, they tipped me like crazy, they told me they had just received their money a few weeks back and were out having fun.  Many of the locals hated that. They were pissy towards them because they viewed it as blowing tax money etc... they were pissed that they even got the money.  I wasn't there long enough to get into all the issues and details, but it was bizarre.  I was only there 4 total months over 2 years (june and july of 94 and 95).

Again, I don't really care about the name change, but I understand.  I've seen the use of the word in that way.

There is no ****ing way that is true.

Under certain treaties, the federal government makes yearly payments to the tribes themselves and that's to be used for housting assistance, health care, etc. I've seen nothing where that becomes a one-time check for $100K. That just screams "racist urban legend" to me.

That's what I was told. It's possible they were from a reservation in Canada, I'm not sure, but again, I know it was talked about and I was told first hand by the 2 I served at the bar.

Let me see if google can help me....

I just sent a text message to the family that we lived with in Great Falls when we were there. They are 2 hours behind but I"m sure I'll hear back.

Its possible that the money was not govt money but something that they did within themselves, I'm not sure, still looking.

The only way that is even remotely possible if there is some kind of payment for mineral rights, but that would almost certainly go to individual rights holders and I've never heard of a one-time payment to a 21 year old.

I don't even get the legal significance of 21. That sounds like someone heard this myth and made the age 21 instead of 18 because all Natives are alcoholics so they'd want the money when they could legally buy booze.

Looking at google responses, it looks as if it could have been money set aside for them, IE, the government collected money and held it until they came of age.  Once I get the text back, I'll share.  I've also seen a lot of "urban legend" responses and a few mineral responses.  I just know it was talked about in the bar where I worked and the 2 guys I served stated to me that they got their money and were enjoying it.  I asked a coworker what that meant and they told me the rest, which may or may not be 100% accurate as to where the money came from.

I'm not sure what makes me more sad. Non Native Americans who are uninformed, but just following the crowd, trying to get the name changed or our own fans who have been life-long fans, just giving up/in and lobbying for a name change.

Been a fan for almost 40 years. I never want to see the name changed and will always call them the Redskins.

At the risk of making you has a sad, I'm about ready to give up.  I don't want to see the name change, but I'm almost ready to give up if it means changing it on our terms to something that respects the fanbase.

I've been a defender of the name, and my personal view remains the same.  And I'm not about to start lobbying for a name change, by any means.  But here's the thing.  It's starting to have that air of inevitability.  The anti-folks have already won the PR battle to define the name as a slur.  Read any article, and 95% of them the writer takes it as a given that the word is a slur.  We may recognize that it is not clear at all that even a substantial minority of NA people take it that way.  But that doesn't matter anymore.  Perception is reality.  And there's no turning around the perception that it's a slur at this point.  That battle is lost.  And with it will go the war.

I'm out of likes today, but I decided to quote and state I understand what you mean now. No shade from me.

Dated a girl that was part of the Lumbee tribe.  She got a check when she turned either 18 or 21 (can't remember which it was) for something in the 20k range.  Not sure if it was a casino money payout of what but I know that other tribes do get a federal payout at a certain age.

Oh geez. Seen meaning witnessed.

How was that confusing ?

I've seen/witnessed more black on black crime than any other. I've read about and saw reports of plenty of school shooting...never actually saw one.

I've seen news about tons of crazy stuff. I lived in Boston during 9/11..I was never a witness to that crazy stuff.

I didn't say I was confused, you did. Maybe you should chill out and stop making mountains out of molehills.

This is not cleared up.

I looked up the Lumbee tribe and found this FAQ.

Do American Indians receive a cash payment from the United States Government?

No. However, the federal government might pay certain tribes' royalties for leased properties, mining rights, water rights, etc. Such funds are usually paid directly to federally-recognized tribal governments and are disbursed as they see fit.

http://www.doa.nc.gov/cia/faq.aspx

So, the feds do make a payout to the tribe for mineral or water rights, and the tribes can distribute that money.

This sounds a bit like the Alaskan Permanent Fund, but the highest that payout has ever been is $2,000.

I find it remarkable that an 18 year old could make $20 grand in mineral right distributions. And I can't believe this is a one time payment.

$20 grand to every member of a tribe would put every member of that tribe well over the federal poverty level.

LOL... he and his wife hosted Dodger players at their home for years... Their house was possibly used as a brothel at one time, they purchased it and moved it from the city to the outskirts.  I stayed there because my brother was only 17 and wanted to quit because he got homesick so bad, so I lived with him in the summers for 3 years, 2 in Great Falls, one in Savannah Ga.  Anyway, they were the greatest host family ever.  We got drunk with them all the time, played cards, they had a big hot tub outside, perfect for hosting females and they took us to a lot of really cool places including Holter lake (where they live now) and Glacier National Park.

Great memories.
