But even if they wanted to, they would not be able to enforce anything like that. There are a gazillion guns owned that they don't know about, much less who owns them. Since there's no perfect solution, let's do nothing? I'm with Burgold. 1
Dont Taze Me Bro
6 minutes ago, Burgold said: What should the government/POTUS do? Off the top of my head-- 1. Empower the CDC and NIH to research the problem of gun violence 2. Fully fund the ACA and stop using it as a political football 3. Expand medicare and VA funding for mental health services 4. Create an electronic medical database that improves the sharing and efficiency of background checks especially when it comes to those with proven violent psychiatric issues. 5. Actually man and fund the government groups/agencies that are designed to watchdog these things. Many of them are horribly undermanned and underfunded and we find out all too often in hindsight that there is a huge trail of social media breadcrumbs that could have led agents to discover and prevent these tragedies. 6. Disallow the NRA from making any political contributions. Since we know they are taking large international donations and foreign monies can not be used for political donations... let's get the NRA out of politics. That's a starter I put together even without thinking or stopping to look anything up. 1. Agree 2. Not sure how that ties in 3. Agree 4. Probably won't happen, HIPAA. That's the slippery slope when it comes to mental health checks and firearm purchases. Something needs to be done, agreed, how is the problem. In NC, you have to sign a mental health release form (handgun purchase permit only) but it only releases any court orders on mental health issues where a court mandated you cannot own/possess a firearm, not any actual mental documents from a physician. 5. Agree, where is the funding going to come from? That's a huge issue. Agree 100%. 6. Agree, and I'd like to add that rule for all lobbyist groups. No Excuses
There is something deeper that is wrong that goes beyond mental health. The country is both becoming less violent but more prone to singular mass casuality events.

Point to where I said to do nothing. Better yet, read my response to Destino or hop in the Gun Control Debate thread and look at some of my past posts in regards to gun control laws/regulations. She stated that gun owners should be required for mandatory 6 month evaluations at their expense. I disagreed and added why it wouldn't work in the first place. I'm a responsible gun owner and one that is for stricter gun control laws/regulations. My response to @Burgold wasn't calling him out or defending anything that the president has done, I just wanted clarification because at first glance (at least for me) it appeared that he was hinting towards the military being involved in patrolling/assisting with these violent situations. If only we ran the world The reason number 2 is there is because there is a large segment of the population who may only be getting health care or mental health care via Obamacare. So, if we care about mental health as it relates to gun violence we should stop using health care as a political football and fund it as the law demands.

I'm probably 90% a capitalist, but when it comes to health care I believe in socialism. PCS
On here, they're separable,(though I do note how they can and will blend. It's natural). Or,to be more specific.

There is two separate threads for a reason. A gun control debate thread to discuss......gun control. The mass shooting thread to discuss the shooting, shooter, and specific details of the event. 1 minute ago, Springfield said: I mean, people don’t really care about the mass shootings themselves so why not discuss gun control here? Springfield
21 minutes ago, TheGreatBuzz said: Because using the appropriate thread is the rules of the forum. Ok. Well we can make this one REAL short. Some guy got a gun, most likely legally, and shot up a whole bunch of people indiscriminately. Then it happens again, almost identically. Then again. You could probably close the thread because it’s the same story over and over.
Rogue Jedi
The two threads should just be merged at this point. Edited November 9, 2018 by Rogue Jedi

So, you want to retitle this thread the "thoughts and prayers" thread? Yes, it's valuable to discuss the never ending stream of these incidents 307 as of yesterday, I believe. 307 mass shooting incidents out of 311 days, but are we really going to try to not address the stem causes and the possible solutions? I'm with @CousinsCowgirl84 on this one. The argument from the right has been it is never the right time to discuss gun control when there's a gun incident. Well, over the past few years, there hasn't ever been a time without a gun incident. And doing nothing (other than increase access to guns) sure hasn't made our lives safer or better.
