Players we need to lock up long term

It's the "core Redskins" philosophy. There are young guys we need to keep here - players we should be able to secure long term by paying them what we believe their future worth will be, rather than the old Snyderatto approach of overpaying based on what someone has done elsewhere. We've already done this with Kerrigan. I think we extended T Williams, but I'm not sure.

Two guys we need to nail down - Keenan Robinson and Chris Baker. Robinson is an exceptional ILB - a sure tackler with (unlike Perry Riley) excellent coverage skills. With more and more of the oversized athletic TEs emerging in the NFL, this has become an absolute necessity.

Chris Baker looks like he's on his way to a career year. Solid and steady, we should be able to lock him up withoit breaking the bank.

Niles Paul almost certainly would've made this list had he not been injured. I think we should be able to hang on to him for another year and see how it plays out.

Cousins will undoubtedly be a pick here for some, but I'm not entirely convinced yet. Part of me suspects none of the 3 QBs currently on the roster will be here next year. That opinion is certainly subject to change as the year goes on.

I'm really not sure who falls into this category.

I'm liking what I see from Kirk so far, but I don't know that I'm sold that he will maintain it or that once DC's take away what he's doing well that he'll continue to succeed. Keenan has been good for a season and a couple games, but his early injury history has me a little worried. He may be closest. Given that we have Hatcher, Paea, and others locked up... it might be better to find a young DT stud to groom. I kind of would like to keep Knighton and that gives us three plus Ricky Jean locked on the D line... unless we jettison Hatcher.

The guys who are most interesting to me are a little two green as yet.

Knighton, Robinson are immediate

We need to watch Cousins closely. He might play his way to a nice contract.

I like Baker a lot but we have a lot of depth there. I think he and Knighton are a great pair and love playing together so maybe it is a package deal

I think it is Knighton for a 3 year (he is 29. Keeping him until around 32 should avoid most of the decline), Robinson for a 4-5 year, Baker for a 4 year, try to sign Paul for cheaper than he would have been for 2 years and see how he plays....Cousins needs more time to really gauge his value, and I really think we should try and sign Morris for at least 2 more years. I have a hard time letting Morris go because of the way he plays and the character he brings.

Breeland

He is still on a rookie contract for 3 more seasons.

DJ if he comes back from the injury and has a huge rest of the year

Robinson is a given

Breeland for me is also a given, the kid will continue to get better

Morris I know we have Matt Jones but it will send a message to good players that we reward character, and good play

Cousins, obviously depending on what happens the next 12 games.  But if he continues to show improvement it will be hard to find a QB in the draft next year that can start.

The list is small, if you ask me. Mainly because I'm not worried about long term on guys that we just got, since A) they're not going anywhere anyway, and B) I like to see a track record of high level of play before I start tying up a lot of cap space.

So I'm not even thinking about long term yet on guys like Breeland and Jones. If Robinson and Breeland maintain their play this season, they'll be on the list. That'll be two seasons to make a good judgement on. Other than that, I'd be hard pressed to come up with many names we HAVE to lock up soon.

Quiet as its kept, Morris' production has declined every year he's been in the league. He's on pace for his lowest totals of his career this year. Still a productive guy, but normally, that's not a trend you throw a ton of money at. He doesn't get a long term deal, IMO.

The guy I wonder about is DeSean.  Isn't this a contract year for him?  I believe he is FA after this season.

Wonder if the team has plans to keep him around....

No, he is under contract through next season. I think we hold off on signing him long term. We may have some home grown guys who can take over what he was doing. If not, try to sign him to a reasonable contract after next season, maybe 3-4 years.

Not necessarily a long term lock-up, but I want to see us give Gallete another shot at a 1 year prove it deal. We have first right of refusal to match any contract he is offered IIRC. Would be nice to negotiate a contract with him before he hits the open market.

I thought I remember him saying he wants to prove to Scot that he is appreciative of the chance he was given, so I hope that can help us get him relatively cheap next year. Would be nice to see what him and Kerrigan can do together next year.

You are correct, sir.

Jackson signed a three-year deal worth $24 million, including $16 million guaranteed, a person familiar with the pact told USA TODAY Sports.

Morris.  For his work on and off the field.  Reward him like you did Kerrigan and Williams.

No.  The RB position is not one that should be rewarded heavily, outside of elite talent, which he is not.  Let someone else pay him the big bucks -- we'll throw another hungry young guy into the meatgrinder and use the money saved on more O-line and D-line.

The NFL is a business, and sometimes it's a ****ty business. Do you want to win, or do you want to reward guys?

Nah, the skins don't have anyone currently that can do what Desean does (IMO). I can't remember the last receiver to catch a ball on a go route past the safety. Only Desean has done that (and done is consistently). I think the correct question to ask is if Desean can do what Desean does now in 2-3 years. He'll be a FA at 29. Not sure when his 4.35 speed will start to go, but it's gotta be around that time. I'd maybe try to sign him for a 2 year extension, but beyond that give the reps to younger guys that Scot wants to develop.

I'm putting long term at 4+ years, and for that I can't see anyone aside from K.Rob at this time hitting all the checkmarks needed. Everyone else is either too young and still under contract, too old and likely won't retain their value 4 years out, or not good enough.

I was all about Knighton in preseason... This guy always produced. I'm afraid he's gonna be tough to sign to 3 year deal, he's gonna want that 4-5 year deal.

Also, call me crazy, but the next closest guy is Dustin Hopkins. With the right ST coach, this kid has a bomb for a leg. Lastly, AlMo... seriously, we can swing it and e deserves it.

We've already taken care of all the players I wanted locked up prior to their contract expiring.  Everyone else has to earn their's when the time comes based on this season and when its time for their contract to expire (each for different reasons).

For example, I don't trust Robinson's health yet, Morris market value needs to be set first, and I'm paranoid of taking chips off of any of these young players shoulders.  In happy-land, everyone gets paid what they are worth.  In realty land, you gotta keep guys on rookie contracts as long as you can because the salary cap won't let you pay all of them what they are worth at the same time.  Not if they're worth it.

Ok I only have 2 major comments to contribute... really they are more questions than replies.

I see a few people mentioning knighton.  Now, I am being upfront, I am not questioning him as a player, I'm questioning what he's done thus far.  No, not in the toolbag sense, I'm asking because I was in europe against the dolphins, saw the rams game on a... legal feed, the third game I couldn't see him through my tears, and the last game on a T.V. without audio from 30 feet away at buffalo wild wings.  I promise I will start watching the games with integrity starting next week.  Has he met/exceeded expectations?  I mean, obviously our D isn't a trainwreck in the games so far, I just have no clue what he's done so far.  And yes, if you tell me he has made a difference despite not jumping out on the stat sheet (if he hasn't, I'm not even checking), I will believe you.

The other thing is, his bestie chris baker.  He's the one guy that, maybe because he was an incumbent redskin, has actually jumped off the screen in terms of making an improvement as a player.  He always seemed like one of those rock cartwright type guys to me, a noticeable name that was relevant on our team but never really was able to gauge his value outside the league.  Is this guy legit? I like him that's for sure.

Knighton, there is a reason Hatcher and Baker are living in the opposition backfield.

Baker is earning it.

Cousins, if a rookie comes in and takes it, great. He's improving.

KRob is a great ILB.

Riley is playing great as the hammer. This defense suits him well.

Morris for less than he's worth.
