Russian Invasion of Ukraine

That Crimea position is huge.

Not only is that further indication of long term financial support, your also gonna see a shift to providing even more long range weaponry to Ukraine so they can pound away from a safe distance before moving in proper. Get that stuff in early enough and it will even help their current battles as they gain the ability to strike deeper behind enemy lines, and as the ST. HIMMARS have been showing that is exceedingly problematic for Russia.

Even if the new outlook on Crimea is a bluff, that is one heck of a saber rattle. "You better quit while your behind" at bare minimum and a legit "time to pay what you owe" at maximum.

The GLSDBs could be a major game changer.

Quote

US plans to provide Ukraine with Stryker armored vehicles and GLSDB rockets

According to the sources, the announcement is slated for Jan. 20, when defense ministers of pro-Ukraine international coalition will gather for their eight “Ramstein” meeting.

One official confirmed that Washington will not include Abrams main battle tanks in the package. The decision to withhold heavy tanks for now is reportedly rooted not in “fear of escalation,” but rather in concerns over Ukraine’s ability to maintain Abrams tanks and keep them supplied with ammunition and fuel.

Besides Stryker vehicles, the tranche is said to include GLSDB rockets for HIMARS and M270 rocket artillery launchers, capable of striking targets 150 kilometers away – a substantial upgrade to Ukraine’s long-range artillery capability....

NATO is slowly hinting at more heavy weapons coming this week. So I'm expecting news from that Rammstein meeting infos. From what I understood from various reporters is that first Germany will allow the transfer of Leopards tanks to Ukraine. But since they don't want to do it alone, you can expect a bit more. GLSDBs would be a good trade off for tanks and could go along nicely. Some french Leclerc tanks could be useful in here too.

Tomorrow is gonna be an interesting day regarding the evolution of this war. Don't know if that'll be the game changer everyone is waiting for, because well, 500K more bodies on the fields is still huge. It would take a long time to kill em all, as I'm not expectly Russians to flee the frontline or rebel against old Vlad.

I am hoping the British sending the Challenger 2s will break the deadlock on supplying armor to Ukraine. If Germany wants Abrams deployed before they will allow Leopard transfers, send some, even if the fuel infrastructure isn't ideal.

There are all sorts of rumors flying around.

- the Germans wont budge unless the US sends Abrams because... they want a united front? Seems a bit fishy, as if the Germans allowed it, there's probably at least 3 other countries who'd send Leopards so it wouldn't just be the Germans anyway

- the US wont send Abrams because the Ukrainians don't have the infrastructure to support them. Perhaps a better excuse, but it hardly seems an insurmountable problem.

- several European countries are fed up of all the dancing around and will send Leopards to Ukraine with or without German approval. This is probably some kind of breach of contract but I'm not sure the consequences will do much to stop a transfer in the short term, given Poland shares a border with Ukraine and with most of the countries who want to ship Leopards to the war.

Aside from the lack of tanks there's been a large amount of equipment promised to Ukraine from various countries, including lots of artillery pieces and almost a hundred APCs and IFVs other than the Bradleys and Marders announced earlier.

I'm not sure that Germans want to send their own Leopards. It's more about them allowing Poland, Finland and others to send theirs to Ukraine. It could end up being the same thing with Leclerc.

Also, there's not much interest in sending 2 or 3 different types of tanks in small quantity, it would be a logistic problem for Ukraine in the end. But sending mass of the same type would be much more helpful. So I doubt there's really a great interest in sending Abrams just to say we've send some to Ukraine. The materials send must be helpful and not hinder Ukrainian army in any way.

Kremlin Spars With Ukrainian President Zelensky Over Whether Putin Is Still Alive

Nearly a year into Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the Kremlin has gotten into a bizarre bickering match with Ukraine’s leader over whether or not Vladimir Putin is still alive.

The squabble started when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told an audience at Davos that he’s not entirely convinced the Russian leader is still among the living.

“I don’t quite understand who to speak with and about what. I’m not sure the president of Russia, who sometimes appears against a green screen, is the right one. I don’t quite understand if he is alive, if he is making the decisions, or who is making the decisions there,” he said, according to Ukrainska Pravda.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov quickly hit back—without actually addressing the condition of the Russian leader.

“Clearly, Zelensky would prefer for neither Russia nor Putin to exist. The sooner he realizes that Russia exists and will exist, the better for such a country as Ukraine,” Peskov said in comments published by Russian media.

Putin famously canceled his year-end press conference for the first time in 10 years in December, along with his traditional address to the Federal Assembly. The Russian president has also been widely mocked on social media for attending a range of meetings and key events via video link from his bunker, even as Zelensky has made trips to some of the most dangerous spots on the frontline.

While Putin did take a trip to St. Petersburg this week and appear publicly for several events, the Kremlin stoked further suspicions about Putin’s health Thursday with the announcement the Russian leader had taken a dip in icy waters to mark the Orthodox Christian feast of Epiphany, in keeping with his yearly tradition—but said no one would ever see proof he’d done so.

Turkey’s leader says ‘no’ to Sweden and Finland’s NATO bid

Turkey will oppose Sweden and Finland joining NATO, the country’s president flatly stated in a video released Thursday, as Turkish officials emphasized Ankara’s security concerns.

“We have told our relevant friends we would say ‘no’ to Finland and Sweden’s entry into NATO, and we will continue on our path like this,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a group of Turkish youths in the video for Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, a national holiday.

Turkey’s approval of Finland and Sweden’s application to join the Western military alliance is crucial because NATO makes decisions by consensus. Each of its 30 member countries has the power to veto a membership bid.

Erdogan has said Turkey’s objection stems from its security concerns and grievances with Sweden’s — and to a lesser degree Finland’s — perceived support of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, and an armed group in Syria that Turkey sees as an extension of the PKK. The conflict with the PKK has killed tens of thousands of people since 1984.

US says it’s time for Finland, Sweden to join NATO

The Biden administration said Thursday it’s time for Turkey to ratify Finland and Sweden’s applications to join NATO, bluntly saying that holdout members of the alliance should quickly approve their memberships.

The State Department said Secretary of State Antony Blinken had affirmed resolute support for Finland and Sweden in phone calls with their foreign ministers and said the U.S. places great importance on “remaining allies quickly ratifying their accession.”

In nearly identical statements about the two calls released just 13 minutes apart, State Department spokesman Ned Price said Blinken had “reiterated U.S. support for Finland and Sweden’s NATO accession.”

“He conveyed again our firm belief that Finland and Sweden are ready to join the alliance,” Price said of the calls with Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom and Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto. “The United States urges remaining allies to quickly ratify their accession.”

The statements did not mention Turkey by name, but the calls came just a day after Blinken met with the foreign minister of Turkey, whose country is the most ardent NATO holdout against Finland and Sweden joining the alliance.

So that would be a no

Tanks are an important element in a larger combined arms effort that integrates many different types of vehicles and weapons into an interlocking mutually supporting force that can detect and destroy attackers and quickly weld itself into a defensive posture when needed. That's kinda like saying "Why do you need a steering wheel when the engine and tires do all the work?"

Hmm…. Well, Tesla is slowing removing the steering wheel. They already removed the top and bottom of it. You don’t need a whole steering wheel, that’s for sure….

Pure cowardice by Germany... either that or more likely Scholz is on Putin's payroll. Poland should just give them the middle finger and hand them over anyway.

This was the last chance to get them in time to get training and equipped in time for a spring offensive.  This gives the Russians the initiative to take more territory in another month.

You forgot lay mines.

In all seriousness though, I don't want our tanks left unfueled for some Russian farmer to claim. This war should have taught everyone the importance of only fielding equipment you can resupply. So if that means giving them more different tanks isn't the best way to help them, then we should be looking at ways we can actually best help.

Actually, I think he could best serve the Ukrainian war effort by volunteering his services to the Russian military. He'd perfect their three-pronged chaos/disorder/dysfunction strategy very quickly.

Can't really copy this research paper here, but it seems shareholders are seen as a bigger threat than Russian tanks:

Less than Nine Percent of Western Firms Have Divested from Russia by Simon Evenett, Niccolò Pisani :: SSRN

"Fewer than 9% of western firms have divested from Russia since it launched its invasion of Ukraine, according to a study by academics at St Gallen University and the International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland... The researchers said that of 1,404 EU and G7 companies registered as owning a total of 2,405 subsidiaries in Russia in February 2022, only 8.5% had divested at least one of them by November, with divestment rates “barely changing” in the fourth quarter.

"The study found that more US companies (18%) had pulled out of Russia than European firms (8%), and that of those subsidiaries remaining, 19.5% were German owned, 12.4% American and 7% are Japanese.

"The Swiss researchers said their study probably overstated the degree of divestment and represented “a reality check” on “how willing, able, and quickly western firms are prepared to sever overseas commercial ties in the face of acute geopolitical risks”.

Well, I assume that trying to sell your stake in a Russian company, when Russia is cut off from all international currency, is probably kind of tough.

Tougher I'm sure than some shadow divestiture for appearances sake while maintaining the bottom line

Ukraine war: Serbia uproar over Wagner mercenaries recruiting for Russia

A Russian news video claiming to show Serbian volunteers training to fight alongside Russian troops in Ukraine has prompted outrage in Serbia, exposing its complex relationship with Moscow.

Russia's Wagner mercenary group made the Serbian-language videos to encourage recruitment for the war.

Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vucic, reacted angrily on national TV.

"Why do you, from Wagner, call anyone from Serbia when you know that it is against our rules?" he said.

Critics frequently accuse Serbia of prioritising its long-standing friendship with Russia over its ambition to join the EU. But what has emerged in recent days in Belgrade shows that the picture is not so black and white.

Hinting at less-than-rosy relations with Moscow, President Vucic said that not only was Serbia "neutral" regarding the war in Ukraine, but that he had not spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin for "many months".

It is illegal for Serbians to take part in conflicts abroad.
