I have them as the 5th and 6th LBs currently after the four relative "locks" (Holcomb, Davis, Bostic, Hudson). Special teams will definitely help their cases. Curious, why do you feel Bostic is a lock? To me he's a limited LB....am I missing something with him?

He's faster, quicker, and IMO already runs better routes (my biggest issue with Cam Sims has always been that his routes tend to be sort of sloppy and he doesn't get good separation very often). As far as vs. Humphries I don't think they're fully comparable since Humphries is a pure slot guy. I'm sure Dyami can play slot as well, but I'm guessing he'll be used more outside than in, since we have Samuel and Humphries as inside specialists. Either way, we have a lot of flexibility. A 4 WR set of McLaurin, Samuel, Humphries and Brown is a crapload of speed and talent and could potentially be a nightmare to defend, especially if Thomas continues his trend towards being a top tier TE. It's not that Humphries is comparable to Brown, it's whether the coaches think Curtis/Humphries/Terry is better in neutral settings then Terry/Curtis/Brown. mistertim
Rivera seems to really like Barber so I'd be a bit surprised if we cut him. It still feels odd to me to keep a guy just as a pass protector and for short yardage but it's whatever I suppose. I feel like that's like keeping a guy purely for punt returns. IMO to keep a roster spot open for such a specific skill and not much else, that guy better be pretty damn elite at that one skill. Barber is an ok short yardage guy and pretty good at pass pro but he's nothing amazing.

XxSpearheadxX
I'm just some couch sittinf homer, but Dyami looked the part of a Z reciever. I am a fan of Cam Sims, but I think Dyami wins the outside spot in any 3 wr sets. Man i cannot wait until we can run that dual back set but with Samuel as the back next to Gibson instead of Mckissic. Mckissic was good, Curtis is going to make that set so dangerous Edited August 16, 2021 by XxSpearheadxX

We don’t have that many options at LB. Bostic is a starter in base package at the moment and was getting the first team snaps at nickel last week as well. I think you generally have to assume your starters are roster locks, even if sometimes you do get a surprise cut (ie. Morgan Moses). Unfortunately, I don’t think we have the depth at LB to make a cut like that.

Yeah the X and Z are the two outside receivers. As I understand it the main difference is the X WR lines up on the line of scrimmage on the weak side of the formation (opposite the TE), meaning they have to be better at beating the press. The Z WR on the other side lines up behind the line of scrimmage and therefore is harder to jam. Terry has primarily played the X in his career here. I imagine they see Samuel playing some at the Z and some in the slot. Dyami will likely play mostly the Z when he’s on the field.

It all depends on what system you’re running. Old school it was usually a TE, 2 backs, 2 receivers. So the X and Z were usually on different sides aside from Twins closed alignments. Nowadays the X and Z can be on the same side, depending on matchups and such. The Y (TE) is often flexed in today’s game. Thats not even mentioning that the Y can line up on the inside of a 2 WR side of the field with the Z on the outside (so more traditional) with the Z motioning inside into a slot position.

Sounds like there's 5 guys in the mix for 3 spots. Thomas is a lock, Bates is close to a lock, so it's between Reyes, RSJ, and Hemmingway for that last spot. IMO RSJ gets cut, Hemmingway goes to practice squad and Reyes makes the final roster. It must be nice for these 3rd stringers to have a competent QB in Allen to throw them the ball. I feel like he's better than a lot of other teams #3 QB so he can help guys shine. If I'm not mistaken, because Reyes is an international program player, the option exists to put him on the PS with an exemption that eliminates the possibility of losing him. That makes him less likely to make the final roster, since there's no risk of losing him. Unless he's just head and shoulders above the other two guys. Malapropismic Depository
So if John Bates turns out to be a good one, can we credit new scout, Don Warren ? I mean, he must have had some input on nabbing a Tight End. And am I the only one who didn't know one of Bobby Beathard's sons, Jeff, is a scout with the team ? So, who isn't thinking that his bloodline might make him a potential great GM ? Another fun fact - this little Beathard was the NFL's Mr Irrelevant in 1988 - which also happened to be his Dad's last year as our GM Edited August 17, 2021 by Malapropismic Depository

I honestly think I like Patterson’s combo of size and speed in that option. When Barber comes in everybody knows what’s happening, Patterson gives you a few more options. Agreed. Seems to be some trying to strain to find something to hang your hat on with Barber. He's a bad pass catcher. He's a below average runner. Yes, he's a better pass blocker than Gibson or McKinnon. But are you going to play him just to pass block when he's worse everywhere else? His yards per carry are just abysmal, but people try to justify it because if you only need a yard, he might get it for you. But he's not some magical short yardage back. He's technically better at short yardage because he pretty does nothing else. But that does not make him good. He seems to be a nice guy. Has fine intangibles. But he is the definition of replaceable. The only thing saving him is the complete lack of talent at RB. With Miller gone and the fact Jonathan Williams is somehow worse, Barber's only competition is an UDFA. And it's entirely possible the team somehow keeps them both. AlvinWaltonIsMyBoy
I think Thomas, Bates, and Reyes is a pretty firm bet for the final roster. A little raw in depth, but nice upside. Excited about this group.

Quite a tandem, eh ?
