Used to live in VA Beach, it didn't feel like a city the way Norfolk did.  I mean, even Suffolk is a city, technically 😒

Yeah it's such a crappy excuse for a city and the people from there seem to think it is so great.  I lived in Richmond, Norfolk, and Charlottesville, and all of them are so much more interesting and vital.  Yes even Norfolk, and Norfolk was depressing to me.

Now I live in Atlanta and it's like Richmond or Raleigh on steroids, and I can see how a progressive D party that appeals to urbanites and suburbanites can win red states.  But not in crappy faux cities with zero culture or intellectual/creative energy like VA Beach.  Republicans hanging on to VA beach is probably what is keeping the state purple.  If that place was a real city, VA dems would probably win statewide elections pretty easily.

But since VA doesn't have one single mighty urban area for Democrats to carry to statewide wins like Georgia or Illinois, then their candidates' ground game has to be better and more expansive than McAuliffe's was this cycle.  I don't know how yard and road signs are as a type of measure of enthusiasm, but I recently drove from pretty much Danville to Norfolk and up the middle peninsula and Youngkin signs were everywhere.  I'd guess like a 20 to 1 advantage of his signs to McAuliffe's.  That makes me think his ground game was a lot better.

The point here, and it’s proven even more with the success of the fabricated CRT scare, is that a ton of people are actually racist and also simply don’t want to hear about that or about race in any way. That’s what CRT is all about and it’s also the point that you are making. You claim it gets thrown around too much but in reality it gets thrown around over racist statements, actions, policies and people. If it’s used a lot it’s because it exists a lot. And it seems people are tired of having to acknowledge either their own racism or it in general.

I guess another point is that a lot people don’t care if they are racist or if the people they vote for are so calling them out doesn’t do anything.

in the end, it all goes back to messaging for Dems. You can even run a vanilla textbook meh candidate like TM if you message well and he’s just the vehicle that delivers it. He didn’t do that and let “they’re teaching our kids to hate white people” to dominate the election.

This shouldn't be a surprise.  People wear different masks in different social settings.  I wonder how many people that appear to be liberal went into a voting booth yesterday and secretly voted for Youngkin.  It's one thing to post a sign in your yard, I see them here in Winchester at times.  "In this house, we believe black lives matter, no human is illegal, love is love, blah blah blah."  It's one thing to sip lattes with friends and talk about being progressive, hating conservatives, etc.  Call it virtue signaling, call it whatever you want but IMO, there are a lot of people that like to advertise their beliefs for some reason.  Makes me wonder why they feel like they have to prove it to everyone.

But once they go into that voting booth?  No one's watching, no one's around and they can feel comfortable with voting what they really think but can't say.

Anyway...

How is it that the day after elections, everyone's like "So and so ran a terrible campaign."  It seems like no one says that DURING the campaign.

Dems failed to "Rommey" Youngkin. The dude is an executive at the Carlyle Group, i.e rich elitist deep state contractor.

Anyhow, the country still votes/hinges on whether or not the feelings of white folks are hurt. When they are, you get last night in VA. Just like '09 in VA.

It's because McAuliffe is a rich boy too.

Yup. came in very late.

The frustrating thing about it is when the GOP controls the VA government, they steal tax dollars from Northern Virginia. It is essentially socialism for ROVA

They typical school district in VA is funded by 70% state funds and 30% local funds.  In Fairfax county, the split is opposite.

I heard this Monday morning on RVA news: The winning governor in Virginia over the last 45+ years (except for 1) has always been from the party opposite of the White House occupant. The exception is McAuliffe during the Obama administration.

Yep. And that a NJ democrat hasn't won reelection since the 70's.

Acting like a ****ty elitist that believes anyone that disagrees is a racist or a moron, isn’t going to help

But what if you are elite and they disagree because they are racists and/or morons?

The fact that this appears to have been the major call to action is so disappointing.

how stupid the people in this state are. I, foolishly, thought we were smarter than that. But, nope.

CNN just called it for Youngkin.

Well ****.  Now we've got a ****ing Trumpkin in office to rat-**** the state to oblivion.  How ****ing stupid are people?

Indeed.  We've got the best public schools in the country, and somehow changing that is the platform that wins the election?  ****ing idiots.

This is Youngkin's grand plan for education, according to his website

Quote

SCHOOLS

  • Restore the standards by which our schools are measured to actual standards of excellence.
  • Improve school measurement metrics so we can all see how our schools are doing and where help is most needed.
  • Increase the number of Academic-Year governor’s Schools, like the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, with a variety of subject areas.
  • Ensure schools are never again closed unnecessarily for extended periods of time.

STUDENTS

  • Ensure all children can read, write, and understand math by third grade.
  • Equip our students to be the top performing students in the country.
  • Ensure students with disabilities receive all of the services, support, and procedural protections they are entitled to – and listen to parents and students.
  • Put the power back in the hands of parents by providing them with the information they need to make the best decisions for their children.

STUDIES

  • Offer more advanced math opportunities instead of holding students back from achievement.
  • Direct the Department of Education to preserve advanced math classes and the use of advanced diplomas.
  • Teach kids how to think, not what to think. Encourage critical thinking instead of Critical Race Theory.
  • Remove politics from the classroom and teach all U.S. history — the good and the bad.

I'd like to know, from the people that claim that Youngkin won because of his education plan, what exactly it is this guy's gonna do with that plan. Cause it sounds like a bunch of platitudes with no actual plan, to me.

And at this point, I seriously hope they roll out private school hard. I can afford it. I know many conservatives that can't. So, I'm eagerly looking forward to that blowing up in their face as they realize they supported siphoning money out of the public school system, for private schools they can't afford.

No....I am under the impression that VA has been excellent in education since I can remember. Im not sure how they got that one past these parents unless they just dont know whats going on. When Wife Llevron and I were looking at places to live...trying to decide if we wanted to put roots in VA or MD.....my biggest worry was the quality of education our eventual replacement Llevron would get. And VA is just too good to discount. That almost made the decision for me. Its not even close. Just looking at the facilities themselves. There is no comparison. Maybe im just thinking of Northern VA tho. I dunno. Thats a confusing one for me. I never in a million years would have thought that would work.

At the same time, I do think its about time we stop calling these people morons. It doesn't help get their vote. And say what you want about them, we obviously need their vote. There is a game to be played here and Dems lose it like this, imo.

That area is interesting. It’s flooded with military people. It’s not a typical city in any real sense.

Recall a Mark Russel line.

Ronald Reagan had just gone to a southern city where three civil rights workers had been murdered by the Klan, for trying to get blacks to register to vote. To announce that "I support state's rights".

The media of course we're all tripping over themselves to point out that this was a "code word" for supporting segregation. (And they were correct.)

Well, Mark Russel did a routine where he went over other political "code words", and what they actually mean.

The only one I thought was funny, was:

Whenever a politician says "I support a global military. Including a five ocean navy.", what he really means is either "Gee, it's great to be here in Norfolk", or "Gee, it's great to be here in San Diego".

@Llevron

for added hilarity, the people proclaiming our schools are so bad and in need of fixing because they lack even basic understanding of our schools, are the ones outraged at the notion that parents shouldn’t be telling the schools how to be schools.

also most of them are outraged at crt. That thing they can’t explain, that’s not in Virginia’s curriculum.

But they will enthusiastically support the legislation that makes it a state felony for any teacher to tell the class that slavery hurt people.

Racist idiots exist, I’m not denying that.  I’ve met more than I’d like.  Im saying that assuming a sudden shift from a key group in the electorate that previously supported you is because they’re stupid racists is unhelpful.  Also, it just makes people sound like ridiculous sore losers.  Am I to believe the same women that helped us defeat Trump suddenly remembered they were really racists all along in the last year?  Did Biden charm them with his stunning charisma to such a degree that they forgot?

As to your being elite, the jury is still out.

I’m getting tired of the notion that stupid people need to be coddled. That we better tip toe around them because we don’t want to offend them by pointing out their ideas are dumb and that they seem to lack even basic understanding of a topic yet have really strong opinions on it.

We did that. And all it did was embolden them to be loud and proud of their stupidity, even if they don’t realize that’s what they’re doing.

call a spade a spade.

If you don’t like being told your idea/opinion is stupid, then put more effort into forming opinions/ideas so you don’t wind up with stupid ones.

oh I understand what you’re saying. I was just having some fun.

I think I outlined quite a bit about why Virginia went the way it went last night in a previous post.

but on some level we have to confront the uninformed and racist elements of our electorate. Coddling then and pretending that element doesn’t exist also isn’t helpful.

and I’m just tired of trying to explain why something is what it is, only to see the other person is incapable of critical thinking.

Or recognizing facts

or just, I don’t know, finding some way of going about life other than making **** up.

I mean they call us elitists. So. We’re definitely elite.

I’ll embrace their stupid reasoning. Yeah man. I’m elite. I’m college educated with a well paying job and I think government is good and we should care about helping our fellow citizens that need a little help to bridge the huge gap between people who are fine in life and people that aren’t. And I think it’s bull**** the color of your skin plays such a role in determining how you’re treated.

and they’re stupid and racist. Have fun embracing that.

Same.

But at the same time I am no @PleaseBlitz I do work with and around morons all the ****ing time. And I need them to be productive to have a running and functional group around me. And in order to do that I do have to make exceptions for them without them even knowing it. So how do I do both politically? How do I as a dem get more people to agree with me, and also tell them how stupid they are? Thats a losing situation right?
