I want to see the Dems win but pretending like all republicans the last 50 years have been the same is a narrow view

I used to think this.

hell, I used to vote for republicans exclusively.

but the older I grow, the more apparent it seems that the only thing that’s changed is the republicans ability to hide how awful they are.

ive made a lot of mistakes in life. Some of them permanently affected my life in a negative way. I’ve been wrong plenty. But one of the most shameful things for me is taking unbuilt my late 20’a/early30’s to realize how awful the political party I put so much support is.

This isn’t a blip on the trajectory of the gop. It’s part of the trend. It’s what happens when you decide, decades ago, that you can just lie about anything/everything.

Trump. Anti vaccine/anti mask. 1/6. Racism.  This is who republicans are.

Just voted. Steady traffic for mid-afternoon. Hopefully there is a strong turnout.

I struggle why any reasonable centrist/independent can consider voting for the party of the Jan 6 insurrection.

I do know a few people in my extended circle who are childish ignorant nuts about politics and they are all on the right. I know a few who are far left who I disagree strongly with politically but could carry on an intelligent argument about the abject failures of capitalism.

But what I don’t understand is how the average person could look at Trump’s disciples after everything that happened since 2016 and think that’s who they want to lead the state/country.

I think you need to differentiate between that unhinged GOP vs the previous versions. Not every repub in the last 50 years has aligned with the current views.  In fact some have been very outspoken of the new GOP. There have most definitely been some bad democrats.

I dont think there needs to be any difference made, honestly. Republicans have traffic in bull**** and lies for years. They just finally reached a place that people cant ignore it anymore cause its hurts them too.

Bringing democrats into this is pointless and just sounds like sour grapes in the end. "But the Democrats are bad too!!" helped us get to the place where people can vote for trump and say "Well the Dens are just as bad". Thats what I mean. That sorry ass argument is what got the GOP here. Cause it just keeps working and people just keep using it.

Exactly. Its the same ****.

Honestly, im trying to talk myself into having something to hope for.

@Llevron I mean it seems pretty clear you said there’s no difference. But sure let’s drop it.

This is why your party is where it is LOL. Hold onto that pointless argument no matter how wrong you obviously are or how stupid it makes you look. If you say it enough someone will believe it! Maybe even you.

This **** is so pointless. And over nothing. You deserve it, honestly. Clearly this brand of BS is made for you. This is how it works for the GOP too btw. You keep saying dumb ****, I keep refuting what we all can see and we both get to look like there is an “argument” being made. When really you are just wrong. Same exact ****. Grats you are the poster boy

“Your party”  You couldn’t be more wrong there.  I haven’t voted Republican since I could vote.  That however doesn’t mean I think they are all bad. Hell McCain wasn’t a bad option but I thought after the Bush era we needed a different direction.    You said there was no difference then you back tracked to saying you didn’t say it.  I quote  your first comment to me and you go on a rant about the GOP and turning your words.  Bud I don’t care if you think there’s a difference or not between the gop now and before but atleast be consistent.  Your first comment was there is no difference when responding to me. Don’t say you didn’t say something when I can literally quote it from a page ago.

Sums up my feelings, too.  Although I don't really feel that way about politics/politicians on the whole.  I think, speaking strictly for myself, I can safely say I've never put "so much support" into a politician or a political party.  I don't see that changing, either.

The GOP has changed and changed a lot.  It baffles me how they're still looking to Trump even though he holds no ****ing power right now.  These people are ****ing idiots and none of them have the balls to step up and tell that guy to go **** himself.

“So much support” would probably be about 10 years of voting for them and pushing their arguments. That’s as far as I go.

Anyways. Was cool to take the boy to see the whole thing play out. My parents took me to vote. Every year. And drilled in my head how important it was.

also now I get half the day off since it’s a state holiday. Which means instead of waiting in line for 2 minutes at lunch time there’s literally no one else there. Everyone working the polling center stopped and talked to my son about how important it was to vote.

I know this, if I had to hire one of these two guys to be the GM of my store, I’d hire Youngkin in a New York minute with no regrets.  Mildly competent nice guy though he seems to be, Mcauliffe is a total stiff as a candidate.

Additionally, fringe lefty and the political poison that is the “defund the police” sloganeering need a firm and total smack down.  And they need it now, well in advance of 2024…or 2022 for that matter.

Purple Virginia will be fine.

Well I put my vote in for McAuliffe. I was planning to do a Younkin vote auto until I had the ballot because I generally agree with conservative economic ideals but as I was putting the pen to the ballot I thought “let’s not do something stupid” so I voted McAullife.

I like what he is doing for the offshore wind project, casinos, etc. As far as the police I don’t really care either way about that, McAullifce isn’t going to defund the police. And once I put McAulliffe for governor the rest of the ticket just happened, it would be too awkward to have a democratic governor and a republic loutinant  governor….

And that was seen as a repudiation of Trump and a precursor to a wave midterm the following year.

Hopefully we aren’t following a similar pattern.

History tends to repeat itself.

Virginia usually votes against the party in power at the presidential level for their governor. The recent exception was when Terry won in 2013.

I think Youngkin wins.

In New Jersey, Dem governors don’t seem to win re-election. I expect that continue tonight.

The gop momentum will carry over into 22, when history will repeat themselves and the gop wins big at all levels in 22. I think their victory will be big enough, that even if the Dems win a lot in 24; they won’t win back control. 22 is looking real bad for the Dems; even if they get something passed.

Can I add this to the list of things you’re not allowed to say starting January 1st 2022

(not you specifically… general ‘you’)

It is what it is. I did say Terry was the exception in 13. A lot to ask for a repeat performance.

Nah I didn’t mean you specifically.

i just feel like every time I look at the news or here I read I that statement. Like twice.

It’s at the point where when I read it I just want to yell “DID YOU GUYS KNOW WE VOTE FOR PARTY AGAINST THE SITTING PRESIDENT?!?” But Im afford to scare all the people around me

You all are missing something.  There is some percentage of the GOP support that votes soley for their wallets.  Ie. "Voting GOP will put more money in my pocket" is pretty much a guarantee.  This is business people all day long, or even aspiring business people.

If that starting support is 35%, they only need to capture 25% of the outstanding, ie. true toss-up votes to carry them to victory.

I don't even need to look it up, but I bet Youngkin already talked about tax cuts.

Fair enough.  That's about as far as I went, too.  I'm proud to say I've never given a dime to a politician...never had a bumper sticker, yard sign, etc.  Sure as **** would never think about spending any time volunteering for one, either.

Many business people have a slightly more nuanced understanding. No-one wants to pay more taxes than they need to but everyone understands the need for services.

Business people perpetually have their hand stretched out for tax deductions and grants for innovation, meeting hiring goals, lobbying for infrastructure etc. They mostly want other people to pay for their 'handouts'.
