2020 Comprehensive Draft Thread

Watching Ohio State a bit this year KJ Hill was constantly sticking out to me. I was surprised to see him mostly in the 3rd to 5th round range, but assume that's a product of what many have said is an extremely deep WR class.

 

Sounds like Hill is showing out at the Senior Bowl.

 

I had kind of circled Hill as a "Terry McLaurin" type of pick in the 3rd round or 4th round and given that he has likely wrked a bit with Haskins, it would be a winning addition.

 

Now I fear he won't make it to the 3rd, but there are so many WRs that could go in front of him ... that 3rd may be a great spot to take him.

Here are my thoughts on going after an OT in this draft. I would LOVE to get a guy like Charles. I just don't know if we have the picks. But ... big but ... if we end up moving on from Trent Williams then we need to use that draft capital to double-down on OL. Let's say we get a 3rd and 4th rounder for him. Use that expanded draft capital to hit the position twice in the mid-rounds.

 

If you have 3/3/4/4/4 I would hope you get one of Charles or Cushenberry in the 3rd and the other in the 4th. I love that LSU duo. And pair Charles with a re-sign of Penn or another vet LT to compete with.

I just can't see committing more than 1 mid-round pick to OL without more draft capital, which sucks. But if we are bringing back Trent and Scherff that is mitigated a little bit IMO, and you can just hit the position 1 time in the mid-rounds and add some talent at T/G/C.

Chase Young, Edge

 

 

School: Ohio State | Year: Junior

Young is a tall, long and athletic defensive end. As a pass rusher, he explodes off the ball and gains ground in a hurry. He uses a quick swipe move and also has the ability to control the wrists of blockers. He can convert speed to power and is effective on loops and games. He does have a little tightness at the top of his rush. Against the run, he sets the edge easily and uses his quickness to slip blocks and create chaos behind the line of scrimmage. Overall, Young is an All-Pro talent, reminiscent of Julius Peppers and Mario Williams.

Derrick Brown, DT

 

 

School: Auburn | Year: Senior

Brown has excellent size, power and athleticism for the defensive tackle position. As a pass rusher, he has a quick first step and uses his hands very effectively. He wins with a violent club/swim move, a rip move or a nifty up-and-under counter move. Against the run, he easily holds the point of attack. The Auburn product creates separation from blockers with an explosive punch, which allows him to close quickly and make plays. His effort is consistent. Overall, this is a complete player capable of dominating on all three downs. He'll be a difference maker on Day 1.

Joe Burrow QB

 

 

School: LSU | Year: Senior (RS)

Burrow has solid size for the position and he possesses many elite qualities. He operates out of the gun in the LSU spread attack and he is extremely accurate, efficient and instinctive. He is very smooth in his drop and he has the ability to process through his reads at a rapid pace. He throws with anticipation and he can naturally layer the ball over and under coverage. He doesn't have top shelf arm strength when driving the ball outside the numbers. He relies more on timing/touch. He doesn't flinch versus pressure when he sees something he likes down the field. If he needs to buy time, he can slide and climb the pocket with excellent feel/awareness. He has a nice burst when he leaves the pocket and he is more than a capable runner. Overall, Burrow lacks special arm strength but his combination of poise, accuracy and toughness is very appealing.

Isaiah Simmons, LB/S

 

 

School: Clemson | Year: Junior (RS)

Simmons is an extremely versatile, athletic defensive chess piece. He is a long, rangy athlete who lined up at linebacker, over the slot and in the deep middle for Clemson, thanks to his diverse and unique skill set. Against the pass, he has terrific range and instincts from the deep middle. He has the speed and agility to match up with top-flight tight ends and backs underneath. He is an explosive blitzer off the edge and in through the middle. Simmons overpowers running backs in protection. Against the run, he takes good angles and his speed allows him to make plays from the back side. He will struggle at times if he has to take on blocks on the edge. Overall, Simmons is built for today's NFL and his role could change week to week, depending on the opponent.

Jeff Okudah, CB

 

 

School: Ohio State | Year: Junior

Okudah has ideal size, length, twitch and competitiveness for the position. He is very comfortable and effective in both press and off coverage. He is patient in press and very fluid/smooth when he opens up. He does a nice job of staying on top versus vertical routes and he can locate the football down the field. He has the agility to mirror underneath. In off coverage, he explodes out of his plant and he is a dependable open field tackler. This is a very clean player with a very high floor and ceiling.

Tua Tagovailoa QB

 

 

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

Tua lacks ideal height for the position but he has quick feet, eyes and release. He primarily operates in the gun but he will take some snaps under center. He is very crisp and urgent in his setup. He throws off a firm platform and he spins the ball really well. He always throws with the proper pace on slants and crossers. He doesn't have an overpowering arm but he can still place balls in tight windows. He understands how to hold and manipulate safeties with his eyes. He makes good decisions in the RPO game. He is a nifty runner but he prefers to buy time behind the line and remain in passing mode. He did struggle with identifying some underneath defenders when in the red zone. He is coming off a serious hip injury and that must be factored into his evaluation. Overall, Tua is the ultimate point guard. If he can remain healthy, he has the potential to be one of the NFL's most efficient passers.

Javon Kinlaw, DT

 

 

School: South Carolina | Year: Senior

Kinlaw is a hulking defensive tackle prospect. As a pass rusher, he has a sudden get-off and he's quick to shoot his hands and drive back blockers. He will also incorporate a push/pull move on occasion. He does need to broaden his arsenal of moves, but there is tremendous upside. Against the run, he easily locks out single blocks, but he gets washed by angle blocks and double teams. His effort is solid. Kinlaw showed out against elite competition, but he played down to the level of lesser opponents. Overall, Kinlaw's best football is in front of him and he has Pro Bowl potential.

CeeDee Lamb, WR

 

 

School: Oklahoma | Year: Junior

Lamb is a tall, lean wideout with top-tier hands, toughness and production. He lines up inside and outside. He is a smooth, fluid route runner and understands how to set up cornerbacks. He also has a good feel in zone. He attacks the ball when working back to the quarterback and tracks the ball naturally down the field. Lamb doesn't have elite speed, but he can find some extra juice when the ball is in the air. He is at his best after the catch, as he consistently breaks tackles and is also very elusive. Overall, Lamb is polished player who is equally explosive and reliable.

Jerry Jeudy, WR

 

 

School: Alabama | Year: Junior

Jeudy is an elite route runner with outstanding burst, body control and awareness. He explodes off the line and uses his quickness to avoid press coverage. His snap at the top of the route is as good as any prospect in the last decade. He has the ability to make plays outside of his frame, but he will have some concentration lapses which lead to drops. After the catch, he is very slippery and elusive, though, he isn't going to break a lot of tackles. Overall, Jeudy is a loose athlete with elite route skills and he should emerge as a high-volume production guy very early in his career.

Mekhi Becton, OT

 

 

School: Louisville | Year: Junior

Becton is a massive left tackle prospect with a similar size/skill set to former first-rounder Bryant McKinnie. In pass protection, he has surprisingly nimble feet and uses his length to steer defenders. Even when he fails to land his punch, he can absorb rushers with his girth. He needs to improve his awareness versus games up front. He is a dominating run defender and collects knockdowns by the bunches. He latches on and uses his upper strength to torque and toss. He isn't as effective when working in space. Overall, Becton has areas to improve -- mainly balance and awareness -- but he is a rare athlete at this size and his upside is through the roof.

DJ's OL rankings are nuts.  Feels like he's trying to be different.  Thomas is clearly a better player than Becton.  I'm not even sure Becton can make it through an entire game at LT, or that he won't eat himself out of the league in two years.  Thomas straight up kicked K'Lavon Chaisson's ass and handled Lawrence well too, and he dominated Okwara.  Strong against real competition.  He is so much more explosive than Becton, So much more fluid in his set and his slide and mirror and he's got real recovery speed when he gets beat.  He can redirect inside after getting beat and re-establish the pocket against NFL twitch.  Becton does not have this capability at all.  He is the best pass protector in the class day one, not a projection.  Plus we've got two seasons of him just road-grading the left side with Kindley.  He's proven himself as a run blocker.

 

People are flat out hating on this kid now, and he's going to end up being the best LT from the class, just like we knew to be the case back in September.  TDN's guy specified LSU as his worst film in his scouting report, and I'm thinking WTF was he seeing?  He was outstanding in that game.  Chaisson, Clark, Fehoko, and Lawrence got almost nothing on him.  The only left side pressure came from one single snap where Fromm hitched twice and Chaisson got his arm on the release.  Thomas still rode him out of the pocket and got him on the ground, Fromm would have stayed clean if he'd stepped up or gotten it out at the end of the drop.  The rest was from blitzes with failed protections, and that's on Fromm and the playcaller.

 

We don't need to overthink this kid.  He's a good player and a clean projection to the NFL.  He's a fringe top ten pick and clearly the best OT in the class.

The fact that there are so many differences of opinion across the scouting community in regards to OT1 makes me extremely happy we ended up with the #2 overall pick. I could easily imagine us reaching for an OT in the top 5 and that player not ending up as the best OT in the class a few years down the line.  I hope that happens to NYG.

Can't see Cincy trading out of #1 and losing Burrow....He's an Ohio native, a great kid and can sling it or run it. He's a slam dunk for a franchise that needs a stud QB. Miami and Cincy may be talking but I don't buy Cincy trading Burrow.

I follow the Dolphins quite a bit living in South Florida, I subscribe to the local papers here among other things, even go to some Dolphin training camp.  It doesn't make me a Dolphins expert but I know my share of scuttlebutt stuff about that team.  if they trade up to #1, they are just as likely to take me or you at that spot than they will Chase Young.  Meaning 0% chance.

 

Their whole effort to go bananas with adding picks had a lot to do with the owner's obsession with finding a franchise QB.  Ever since Marino retired its been a wild and unpleasant ride for that team at that spot.  They've reached the conclusion that they want the best or at worst the perceived 2nd best QB in the draft.  And the only way to do that is either have an awful season or accrue enough picks that they can trade up to get that dude.   That's what's been said by their sports writers a lot.   And it makes sense if you follow the ride they've been on.  

 

So if they are shooting that high up.  It feels 100% like its them executing that plan.  If they shot up to #1 and didn't take a QB it would be one wild story down here and really mega bizarre considering the QB narrative that's been cooking.

 

I love Chase young and that's my target at #2.  Yet if the Dolphins trade up, I wouldn't break a sweat.  All that would mean is its unlikely we'd be getting a mega haul for the #2 pick because I don't know if any other team aside Miami would break the bank for Tua -- maybe Oakland?

Ohio State WR K.J. Hill

Last year Ohio State wide receiver Terry McLaurin was the big winner of the wide receiver group in Mobile. This year, it’s been another Buckeye in Hill. In a loaded wide receiver group, Hill’s route-running has separated from the pack. What’s helped his case the most is the fact that he’s been winning from the outside and against press. Hill played almost exclusively in the slot for Ohio State and rarely faced press man. The way he manipulates leverage and varies the pacing in his routes is at a veteran NFL level already. That’s a nice combination to possess projecting forward.

Houston OT Josh Jones

Jones didn’t quite tick the arm length box on day one with 32 1/8  arms, but it didn’t stop him from playing dominant football at Houston and hasn’t stopped him this week. The Houston tackle has anchored down like an aircraft carrier against bull-rushes all week and in the team drills took Wisconsin linebacker Zack Baun for a ride one play down the field today.

Okudah has a better chance of falling to 8/9. So you could take Simmons at 5 and trade back up for Okudah. Not sure I like that though. I’d rather have Young

I'm trying to keep an open mind with him because well-sourced draftniks like McShay swear he's a first rounder.  And TDN compared him to Derek Barnett.  But I think that Barnett comparison is very generous and I wasn't a fan of Barnett at all.  It feels a lot like Weaver racked up a bunch of sacks against trash competition using a combo of brute strength, heavy hands, and funky leverage, and then when he stepped on the field against decent players and coaching he wasn't an issue at all.  He's got the power to make it as a run defender in the NFL, but as an edge player and linebacker, he looked like a future JAG to me.  I like him much, much better 30 pounds heavier and closer to the ball with his hand in the dirt.  I think he needs to gain that weight and move back inside to become a full time interior lineman again in order to reset his ceiling for the NFL game.  That's the only way I'd be willing to use him on passing downs.

He’s not a sexy prospect, he’s not ripped & looks lazy at times, but he’s got a burst & more athleticism than his lesser performances would have you believe. I’m actually intrigued by the fact that he looks like he works at CVS, get him in an nfl *weight room & you may be able to find more to him. 

The pff guys below say he was injured heading into the bowl game, so that may explain why he was useless vs UW. 🤷‍♂️

I'm starting to like QB Justin Herbert from the University of Oregon. He can make all the throws. He's a fast elusive runner. He is 6ft 4inches and 225lbs. He won't make it out of the 1st round so unfortunately I'd say use our #2 pick on him. Let him and Haskins battle it out best player starts.
