I think socialism is a great idea, until people get involved. that said, i'm for some kind of regulations, which I was generally against not too long ago. that's why I agree with AOC in principle on amazon getting tax breaks, for example, and higher taxes for the rich, get rid of the loopholes, etc., but I don't always agree with the methodology. Agreed, regulating capitalism is not the same as ending it. My biggest gripe with Bernie and AOC is they refuse to male clear what their lines are on this, this neither do their followers.

He seems to be far more in line with old school New Deal Democrats. Not actual socialism like a true Democratic Socialist. They'd all be better off using the correct term of Social Democrat imo. Monty python summed it up pretty good in LoB. Edited April 4, 2019 by clietas

I'm on social media enough and can see there's dangerous game being played that what my generation wants can only be achieved by eliminating capitalism. This strategy is not new, its old as socialism itself. For me the issue is not being anti-capitalism vs. pro-socialism. It is the fact that the term "socialism" has been ****ized and turned into something of a much bigger scope then it's traditional definition. "Beware of the socialists" has been a rallying cry of the right since FDR, but it didn't always get a lot of traction (outside of the fringe of the right) until they had a media empire to be an echo chamber, now you have people who act like any thing pre-Reagan is some kind of socialist nightmare that we were rescued from. Just like Tucker Carlson's guest told him to his face (the un-aired segment) you have billionaires paying the salaries of millionaires to spread the "news" about how awful it would be to raise taxes on the billionaires. The truth is the U.S. economy has worked best as a mixed bag. For every person who decries "Socialism" I bet if they actually dug deep into the economy they would discover there are a lot of "socialism-like" programs that they agree, support, and very possibly rely on themselves. This has nothing to do with Capitalism vs. Socialism, it has to do with not wanting to keep removing the checks & balances from our system that protects the lower & middle class. No one is running on "socialism" in the way Fox News would like folks to believe. I also agree that for Bernie & AOC types, they do need to do a better job of coming out and making a simple statement like, "I am more an FDR Democrat than a Clinton Democrat" Edited April 4, 2019 by NoCalMike 1

Tho at least he agrees that AOC is hot. I started a thread about difference between democratic socialism and social democracy and it went well for most part. Bernie and AOC views are not full blown socialism, but they would do everyone a huge favor in consistently clarofying the difference between the two and they don't. Organizations like DSA have fully embraced Bernie and called out AOC for not being clear enough in her beliefs. On the surface it looks like they have big dreams for the future of the country, a sonic push forward, and don't want to rip away from the far left because they need them to do it. Does that mean they are socialist? I wouldn't go that far because I haven't seen either flat out say capitalism needs to go like many of their followers do. Are the two of them playing safe by not calling this movement out so they can semi-lead that energy? I hope, but they need to rip the band-aid off eventually for the good of the country.

Fergasun
The support for AOC represents the growing number of people who feel disenfranchised by the current political system -- people who see that America and the world has changed, but politics in America is stuck un 40 years ago. The pushback represents the old political system trying to stay in power. If there was a thoughtful, articulate, arch conservative that challenged the political system the same way AOC does -- I hope that I would like them too. The "GOP equivalent" to AOC is Elise Stefanick -- youngest female elected to Congress prior to GOP. Background, worked in the GW Bush Whitehouse...plus worked prepping Paul Ryan for his debates as VP... sorry... can't take up the "I am fighting against traditional political power" with that resume. Another "GOP AOC" was Aaron Schock -- opps, he was kicked out of Congress over a use of funds scandal, indicted and his campaign committee pleaded guilty to misuse of funds. National Review called out his corruption. It seems young conservatives are more likely to follow in Breitbart's and Rush's shoes (Ben Shapiro) rather than Congress. Newsmax #1 "conservative under 30" is Hope Hicks.... followed by others working for Trump. "Freedom, feee markets and limited government..." people should not be given any access to government positions. What you get is the destruction of government protections... Trump is example A. These people are sucking up to Trump in such a big way there is no way they could be considered "independent". Any thoughtful, arch conservatives who don't peddle the same: "I will preach free market conservatism because I am being paid by big corporations to ignore the plight of the poor...." BS that I just spent an hour reading about... because that is how dirty I feel when I read their "political influencer" garbage.

Establishment gop didn’t want him to win the nomination and in fact several GOP congressmen resigned in the aftermath of his election. There is no question Donald Trump was successfully marketed as anti establishment. Hes gotten the GOP to bend his way. A lot of the old-power establishment gop is gone. Donald Trump is probably the GOP version of AOC... Quote If there was a thoughtful, articulate, arch conservative that challenged the political system the same way AOC does -- Not trump. ixcuincle
Why should politics be establishment. AOC is the new blood. Donald Trump gave outsiders a bad name, but AOC just shows with hard work you can upset establishment politicians in elections and get work done

Yeah, the same. 6
