All kinds of wild **** on that site.  Too bad I can't justify spending $1200 on a jacket.

You just gotta persuade your marketing person that it's the new Patagonia bro vest, and to order some for the office to look cool when you are with tech clients.

WTF happened to Elon Musk?  He’s about six months away from halting all human contact and storing his urine.

This is what happens when you never take a vacation and recharge...

Why Elon Musk says taking 'vacations will kill you'

"In the last 12 years, I only tried to take a week off twice," he said in 2015 on Danish television. "The first time I took a week off, the Orbital Sciences rocket exploded and Richard Branson's [Virgin Galactic] rocket exploded in that same week.

"The second time I took a week off, my rocket exploded," Musk said.

"The lesson here is, don't take a week off."

Even before that, when Musk tried to take his first adult vacation, his honeymoon with first wife Justine in September 2000, he got bad professional news.

At the time, he was CEO of X.com, and company executives were not pleased with his leadership. While Musk was on the plane with Justine, executives delivered a letter of no-confidence to the company's board, pushing Musk out as CEO, and replacing him with Peter Thiel. When he arrived for his honeymoon in Sydney, Australia, Musk had to immediately fly back to Palo Alto, California, according to the book "Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future," by Ashlee Vance.

But perhaps Musk's most traumatic vacation experience came when he and Justine decided to try and go on their honeymoon again that December.

Musk planned a two-week trip to Brazil and South Africa. While in South Africa, Musk contracted the most severe form of malaria. After two hospitals misdiagnosed him, he "came very close to dying," said Musk in "Elon Musk," before being properly treated in the nick of time.

"That's my lesson for taking a vacation," Musk said in the book. "Vacations will kill you."

CES 2020: Restaurant cat robot meows at dining customers

A robot cat designed to ferry plates of food to restaurant customers has been unveiled at the CES tech expo in Las Vegas.

BellaBot, built by the Chinese firm PuduTech, is one of a number of wacky robotic inventions being shown off at the event this year.

There is also UBTech's Walker, which can pull yoga poses.

And Charmin's RollBot. It speeds a roll of toilet paper on demand to bathrooms that have run out of the stuff.

One expert said it was likely that robots exhibited at CES would only continue to get more bizarre in the future.

BellaBot, the table-waiting robot cat, is a service bot with personality.

Scientists in Sweden have developed a specialised fluid, called a solar thermal fuel, that can store energy from the sun for well over a decade....

The fluid is actually a molecule in liquid form that scientists from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden have been working on improving for over a year.

This molecule is composed of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen, and when it is hit by sunlight, it does something unusual: the bonds between its atoms are rearranged and it turns into an energised new version of itself, called an isomer.

This could have interesting applications even on a small scale, ie. you store summer heat for AC and release it in winter? Tie in a fridge and your hot water heater? A HUGE range of what we do and use is a matter of thermal regulation- making hot things colder or cold things hotter-and once you had the basic infrastructure and material, it seems that most of what you have to do is pump the goo back n forth, through a solar collector/ heat exchanger or the catalyst.

What I intended to say there, was that I can't wait for driverless cars and trucks. The former will save a lot of us, probably me included the expense of owning our own cars, along with a host of other benefits. Most likely, self-driving trucks will show up even sooner. Several of you alluded to societal upheaval. There are millions of OTR truck drivers in this country, most of whom live in so-called real 'Muricuh. Things won't go well for them. And while I have no problems with anything that makes things harder/worse for so-called real 'Muricuh, I think the real benefit of this and other automation that throws people out of work is the change to the idea of the Protestant work ethic that will almost certainly follow. There's nothing wrong with hard work. It's a good thing. However, I think we've made it our driving force to the point of fetishizing it. Every time someone tries to make any kind of policy change, it almost always devolves to "They took 'ur jerbs!!".  It's past time to re-examine how we value individuals in this country because right now, we get treated like Boxer in Animal Farm.

US clears the way for this self-driving vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals

Washington, DC (CNN)The federal government has cleared the way for a Silicon Valley startup to deploy thousands of its self-driving delivery vehicles on US streets.

Nuro, based in Mountain View, California, is now able to launch up to 5,000 of its R2 autonomous vehicles over the next two years, according to the US Department of Transportation.

The R2 has no steering wheel, pedals or side mirrors as it's designed to be unmanned and carry cargo. Large compartments on its side open up to reveal deliveries, such as groceries or pizza.

Nuro said the R2 will begin delivering pizza and groceries in Houston this year.

Nuro said it will initially deploy the R2 in six zip codes in Houston, covering 160,000 residents. It plans to start delivering Domino's pizza in Houston soon, although it didn't specify an exact date. In December, the company announced a partnership with Walmart to test autonomous grocery delivery in Houston sometime this year.

Portable Lab You Plug into Your Phone Can Diagnose Illnesses Like Coronavirus

Using your phone to diagnose disease or track your medical condition is the holy grail for remote health monitoring.

So far it’s been impractical to combine the two in a single device; tech companies don’t want the regulatory headaches that would come from labeling phones medical devices.

But University of Cincinnati engineers have come up with the next best thing.

UC professor Chong Ahn designed a tiny portable lab device that plugs into a phone, connecting it automatically to a doctor’s office through a custom app UC developed. With a single drop of blood or saliva on a custom plastic lab chip UC designed, the device smaller than a credit card can diagnose infectious diseases such as coronavirus, malaria, HIV, Lyme disease, or countless other health conditions like depression and anxiety.

Cell-Phone-Lab-University-of-Cincinnati.

The phone provides the power and test protocol to the lab chip. A patient simply puts a single-use plastic lab chip into his or her mouth then plugs that into a slot in the box to test the saliva.

The device automatically transmits results to the patient’s doctor through a custom app UC created for nearly instant results.

New Device Can Power 100 Small LED Lights Simply By Harnessing the Energy of a Single Water Droplet

We are now one step closer to efficiently generating electricity from a single drop of water.

A research team led by scientists from the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has developed a droplet-based electricity generator (DEG): a device that can power up to 100 small LED bulbs simply by harnessing the power of a raindrop.

The device uses a field-effect transistor (FET)-like structure that allows for high energy-conversion efficiency and instantaneous power density increased by thousands times compared to its counterparts without FET-like structure.

The research, which was led by the CityU’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, was published in the latest issue of journal Nature.

Hydropower is nothing new. About 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by water. Yet low-frequency kinetic energy contained in waves, tides, and even raindrops are not efficiently converted into electrical energy due to limitations in current technology.

For example, a conventional droplet energy generator based on the triboelectric effect can generate electricity induced by contact electrification and electrostatic induction when a droplet hits a surface. However, the amount of charges generated on the surface is limited by the interfacial effect, and as a result, the energy conversion efficiency is quite low.

In order to improve the conversion efficiency, the research team has spent two years developing the DEG. Its instantaneous power density can reach up to 50.1 W/m2, thousands times higher than other similar devices without the use of FET-like design. And the energy conversion efficiency is markedly higher.

Scientists create mutant enzyme that recycles plastic bottles in hours

A mutant bacterial enzyme that breaks down plastic bottles for recycling in hours has been created by scientists.

The enzyme, originally discovered in a compost heap of leaves, reduced the bottles to chemical building blocks that were then used to make high-quality new bottles. Existing recycling technologies usually produce plastic only good enough for clothing and carpets.

The company behind the breakthrough, Carbios, said it was aiming for industrial-scale recycling within five years. It has partnered with major companies including Pepsi and L’Oréal to accelerate development. Independent experts called the new enzyme a major advance.

Billions of tonnes of plastic waste have polluted the planet, from the Arctic to the deepest ocean trench, and pose a particular risk to sea life. Campaigners say reducing the use of plastic is key, but the company said the strong, lightweight material was very useful and that true recycling was part of the solution.

The new enzyme was revealed in research published on Wednesday in the journal Nature.

Yeah, first thing that will happen is some creepo will hack the camera to download the pictures of peoples' (probably women's) asses.
