On Eve of Trial, Discovery of Carlson Texts Set Off Crisis Atop Fox

The day before Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation trial against Fox News was set to begin in a Delaware courthouse, the Fox board of directors and top executives made a startling discovery that helped lead to the breaking point between the network and Tucker Carlson, one of its top stars.

Private messages sent by Mr. Carlson that had been redacted in legal filings showed him making highly offensive and crude remarks that went beyond the inflammatory, often racist comments of his prime-time show and anything disclosed in the lead-up to the trial.

Despite the fact that Fox’s trial lawyers had these messages for months, the board and some senior executives were now learning about their details for the first time, setting off a crisis at the highest level of the company, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions.

The discovery added pressure on the Fox leadership as it sought to find a way to avoid a trial where Mr. Carlson — not to mention so many others at the network — would be questioned about the contents of the private messages they exchanged in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election.

Two days after the board’s discovery, Fox settled that case for $787.5 million, believed to be the highest for a defamation trial.

Several people with knowledge of Fox’s discussions said the redacted messages were a catalyst for one of the most momentous decisions Fox and its leaders — the father-son team of Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch — had made in years: to sever ties with the host of their highest-rated and highly profitable prime-time program and a face of the network in the Trump era.

We definitely need to see what was in those texts.  Carlson needs to be outed as much as possible his racism, bigotry and misogyny.  Make him persona non grata within the industry, so even Newsmax and OANN won't hire him.

I’d like to see what’s in those text messages to make Fox wants to fire him but I wouldn’t be surprised if Newsmax or OANN hired him anyway.

Tucker, like it or not, is going to bring viewers and it would be quite a coup for either one of those networks to land someone like Carlson who immediately brings an audience. He’d become the face of their network.

Some offensive text messages? They wouldn’t give a **** with the ratings spike they’d get.

Guy has zero credibility.

Critics dispute Tucker Carlson’s statement on why Fox News dumped him

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson spoke out Wednesday night about his departure from Fox News.

Carlson's exit comes after Fox suffered a major loss in a $787.5 million defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems for the network's attempt to help overturn the 2020 election.

NBC News reports, "In the lead-up to the Dominion trial, Carlson's internal communications were released and showed him criticizing former President Donald Trump and acknowledging the falsity of his claims about the 2020 election."

Now, the far-right pundit is speaking for himself.

Former GOP prosecutor Ron Filipkowski shared a clip from Carlson's spiel via Twitter, writing, "Tucker finally issues a statement. He basically says that the deep state uniparty wanted to silence him because he was tackling the biggest issues of our time that nobody else would talk about."

In the video, Carlson asserted, "Notice, when you take time off, you see how unbelievably stupid most of the debates on television are. They're completely irrelevant, they mean nothing. Trust me as someone who's participated."

He continued, "And yet at the same time... the undeniably big topics get virtually no discussion at all. War, civil liberties, emerging science, demographic change, corporate power, natural resources...When was the last time you heard a legitimate debate about any of those issues? Debates like that are not permitted in American media."

"Both political parties and their donors have reached consensus on what benefits them, and they actively collude to shut down any conversation about it," he said, adding the United States "suddenly looks like a one party state."

The right-wing talking head concluded by raising the question, "Where can you still find Americans saying true things?"

Last month, CNN anchor John King slammed Carlson for his dishonesty.

"Lying is a big piece of the Fox formula and we have glaring new proof of that today," King said referring to Carlson's text messages claiming he "passionately" hates former President Donald Trump, despite telling Fox News viewers the opposite. "Key players at Fox, in their own words, admitting they knew Donald Trump and his allies were lying about 2020 election fraud. Yet, Fox repeatedly promoted Trump's lies anyway because it was good for ratings. We know this because of newly released court filings that include Fox emails and text messages."

Now that Carlson has spoken out, Twitter users aren't buying any of what Carlson is selling.

Steve Carvalho: "Revisionist History"

Luke Zaleski: "Tucker's doing exactly what @elonmusk did—He's trying to suggest he's the ultimate arbiter of truth and an outsider and centrist in order to overtake the media landscape, shift the Overton window, and rebrand in his middle-age. And like with Elon MAGAs are all all-in—in lockstep."

Lonnie Hammack: "Well maybe he got it partially right. He said 'true things prevail.' His show ended because of his lies. Those didn't prevail."

T M Watts: "There's no way anyone could possibly fall for this, yet sure as the sun rises each day, some actually will."

@agamkcuf: "It's very on brand for it to be everyone's fault but his own. Tucker is the classic frat boy who never grows up but has the right connections and money to continue to fool people."

Tuck on, Tucker. Fox doesn't care. Unless Tuckheads outright cancel their cable service, they are still paying monthly to Fox. They can't just cancel Fox from their service, or most of us would have done it years ago. Ad space on his show wasn't driving money to the network. It is cable subscriptions. So, he and Musk or whoever can go wherever. Launch an infowars style thing. They'll get a ton of followers and some money for it. No doubt. But Tucker won't have the Fox legal umbrella anymore. Next thing you know, he's saying Sandy Hook didn't happen and goes he Alex Jones path.

Mike Lindell Makes Bats**t Claim About Fox News' Role In 2020 Election

MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell on Thursday accused Fox News of playing a “big part” in the mass 2020 voter fraud that he claims was Donald Trump’s downfall in the election.

Lindell, a vociferous election denier who has appeared on Fox News and other right-wing outlets to shout his pro-Trump conspiracy theories, now says Fox News was somehow wrapped up in the election “steal” and suppressed the flow of information.

This would be the same Fox News that just paid Dominion Voting Systems gobs of money to settle a lawsuit because the network falsely and repeatedly claimed that balloting machines were rigged against Trump.

Tucker Carlson gets signals from Newsmax that he can run entire network: TMZ

Although a formal offer cannot be made, recently fired Fox News personality Tucker Carlson is reportedly getting word that Fox News competitor Newsmax would like him to come on board.

Carlson was abruptly and unceremoniously booted from his popular nighttime show on Monday and is still under contract to his former employer and reportedly has a no-compete clause that prevents him from moving elsewhere immediately.

According to TMZ, "Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ ... the news channel is doing everything it can to sweeten the deal for Tucker to come on board -- including floating the idea of letting him program the whole channel, not just his own show."

The report adds he can't be directly contacted, because he is prohibited from talking with competitors, but Newsmax "network execs have made it clear to people around him, they would basically give him a big say in rebranding their channel."

Fired Tucker Carlson producer: Misogyny and bullying 'trickles down from the top'

Allegations painting Fox News as an abusive workplace that excuses misogyny and anti-Semitism have been put on blast in the aftermath of star host Tucker Carlson's abrupt firing earlier this week.

Misogyny was "blatant" on Carlson's show and across Fox News, Abby Grossberg, a former senior booker for Tucker Carlson Tonight told NPR's Leila Fadel on Morning Edition.

"They don't care about telling the truth and they don't care about women," Grossberg said of Fox News. "All they care about are ratings and revenue."

Fox has not explained the reasoning behind Carlson's dismissal, which came a week after it settled a high-profile lawsuit with the election-tech company Dominion Voting Systems. The network also fired Carlson's executive producer, Justin Wells.

Both Carlson and Wells are named as individual defendants in an ongoing lawsuit by Grossberg, who is suing them and the network for gender and religious discrimination, as well as unequal pay and failing to accommodate disabilities in federal court in New York.
