Dusty or Flair. They're the best. Foley is underrated on the mic and the Rock is enjoyable for humor sake but strictly promo abilities to sell you on a match is Dusty or Flair.

I do however personally love Jericho. Fantastic as a heel.

I think you make a good point. Rock, Jericho, and to some degree even Austin are wildly entertaining on the mic. But Foley may be the last guy with the ability "to talk you into the building" as the old-timers say. (Austin at the beginning of his big run was more in the Dusty/Flair mold, but towards the end was basically doing a redneck version of the Rock's act). All modern promos seem to be designed to be entertaining for a five minute segment. (Bray Wyatt was different but now he is more schtick than anything else). Older promos were meant to set up and sell a match.

I loved Raven's ECW promos. I thought he was fairly terrible in the ring though.

I also think Jake Roberts should be in the top five.

I would go:

1. Dusty

2. Flair

3. Foley

4. Austin

5. Jake the Snake

Hogan should probably be in there too, but screw him.

By the way, my guiltiest pleasure when it comes to promos is Kevin Sullivan in Florida Championship wrestling.

Seriously, look up him calling for the Purple Haze on youtube. It is simultaneously the most awesome and the most stupid thing ever. Apparently, he and Mark Lewin used to drive around Tampa wearing their robes to sell the gimmick. Can you imagine being in line at the 7-11 and seeing a Satanicly dressed Kevin Sullivan buying a Big Gulp.

You know what the big problem is currently in wrestling? No one is on cocaine. All the best promos from my early years of a fan involved copious amounts of cocaine.

I'm a big Jericho fan. Ever since his WCW days and the tricks to keep his TV Title. I think he's $$$ on the mic and a pro in the ring.

`

For me, he's one of the best eeevvvvveeeeerrrrrrrrr!

Remember when they had that cruiserweight battle royal to face Jericho for the title.  And the masked guy won, pulled it off and it was Dean Malenko.  And the next Nitro, Jericho was talking to homeless people on the street, "He pulled off his mask and it was Dean Malenko!"  "Can you believe that!"

Some of the funniest **** right there, I wish I could find a clip of that.

Unmasked Kane's promos always seemed overdone to me. Hurricane was just annoying IMO and as for Steiner, every time he got on a mic I got nervous for him. Even though his promos are all monotonic and boring how can you watch Orton wrestle and hate him. There's not a wrestler alive who could have hit that RKO on Cody Rhodes the other night with that much precision. It'll never happen but I'd love to see Randy Orton wrestle Kevin Steen.

The all-time worst on the mic among big names who they actually let talk is far and away Jimmy Snuka.

--------------------

SNUKA: Thank you Ripper, ladies and gentlemen, you wonderful people out there in TV-land. Ripper, I appreciate the compliments you just gave to these people out there. Now you know Ripper, as we go along, and standing here before you ladies and gentlemen, all you people out there: the Hawaiians, the Samoans, the Fijans, the Tongans, the Filipinos and you name it as we go along down the line.

You know, Ripper, I've just been standing out here brother, listenin' to you mentioning about all these greatest wrestlers in the past, but nowadays we talkin' about today, tomorrow, and further on. You know, Ripper, there's a lot of people that comes out and stands before this camera and talk.

(EXTREMELY long pause)

You have to realize and know exactly and put it down to a point, to a view, to make sure that you people out there understand exactly what we pointing exactly to you.

Now Ripper...now I know brother, there's a lot of things in everybody's mind wondering what's going on in this world. Well, ladies and gentlemen, only you people can realize and understand one thing, to be paying attention is the only way to know what's going on. Now, Ripper Collins, you know there's a lot of things going on in this world, but there's a lot going on in professional wrestling! And professional wrestling is the name of the sport, there it is only one of its kind.

Now Ripper, there's been a lot of men that's been coming out of the United States, come flying into Honolulu, Hawaii. Why? Because all the professional wrestlers around the world, you name it, around San Francisco---which I'm looking forward to come there---even down all over the coast. Man, you name it, everybody is looking forward to come right here to Hawaii because they know Hawaii is the beautiful paradise of one of the South Pacific islands. You don't even name the Samoan islands, which is one of the prettiest of the South Pacific; the Tongan islands which is the South Pacific; the Fijan islands, which is another paradise of all the South Pacific islands. You name all these wrestlers that come here from all over the world; you name it we got it. And standing here right before you I am one of the Polynesians that represents all the Polynesian islands.

Ripper Collins, we go back in your time brother, that you are one of the greatest and still is. But ladies and gentlemen, you name it, we got it; but there is only one thing that I just like to know deep down in my heart: what is going on here? I want to know. I have to know. Because that's the only way to find out who's got what and who's got who.

Now the most important thing to everyone in professional wrestling, Ripper Collins, is challenging and getting into the ringcircle. Because for one thing everybody is challenging each other for one thing...for one thing, and what that one thing is Ripper Collins, and that's titles. Titles are all over the world, you name the titles that's 'round the world, it might be too much. But let me tell you one thing, it only take faith and confidence to get inside to that ringcircle wherever you at and fight. If it's here in Hawaii, which is so important and so special to me. Hawaiian Islands is what we represent; I represent the Polynesian islands, and if anybody think in their mind that they could come from the mainland, here to my part of my country, and think that they can come and try to demolish the Polynesian islands and and try to take away what they think that does not belong to them---what belongs to us is what we gotta keep in the Hawaiian Islands. Ho-hano, brother.

(about two minutes later, during the next match):

RIPPER COLLINS (attempting the save): I wanna tell the fans, Snuka was talking on his interview there, and in plain simple English what he was telling the whole world is: Jerry Lawler, you're coming to my Hawaii, to my Polynesian land, and I'm going to kick you from post to post and pillar to pillar and take that belt back.

Snuka was terrible.

But at least English wasn't his first language.

There is no excuse for Robert Gibson.

I honestly always thought DDP was terrible on the mic.Remember when he started randomly inserting the word "scum" into people's names?

I also think there is a reason that the best angle involving Ricky Steamboat involved him losing the ability to speak.

Wasn't Gibson partially deaf?

Wasn't Gibson partially deaf?

His parents were deaf, I thought. Gibson may have been missing part of his tongue though. (Just going by his interviews).

Ricky Morton wasn't much better to be honest. And neither of them could really "work" in the way we think of it today.

Yet they are maybe the most fondly remembered babyface tag team ever. It's amazing what you can do if you can do one thing really well. Morton is the greatest seller of all time. And Gibson made the greatest hot tags/comebacks ever. And that formula never fails to work.

And nobody uses it anymore.

Kane ??? Might want to try that again

Dunno about that. With a straight face I'd say that his mic work sans mask was some of the best I've ever seen. Ever. It was even better when you look at where he came from, being a guy with a goofy voicebox, to being a mute. Then they all of a sudden let him talk, and voila.... This guys pretty good all of a sudden.

If they would've let his ass talk from the beginning (with teh mask), I think people would view his  character a lot differently overall. I can speak on anything after '04, so he may have gotten stale, but his promos were awesome.

Go back and watch a lot of those matches where he displayed more psychotic brutality. Crowd would be dead silent in shock/awe

Good points. Between 85-87, no one was as popular as the R&R Express in the NWA. Dusty Rhodes included.

Anyone else going to watch NXT Takeover tonight? I've been getting more amped for NXT shows than WWE shows lately.

I've actually sat through entire NXT shows without fast forwarding...

On RAW, I fast forward through a good portion of the actual matches, watch the promos, watch matches that involve Punk (not any more), Bryan, the Shield, Evolution or the Wyatts. In total, I think I watch about one hour of the three hour RAW a week and ZERO of Smackdown.
