Better Call Saul

OK, I was debating on whether or not to start a thread for this, but considering this is the little cousin to the greatest television show ever made, I figured that, in itself, would lend enough gravitas to this particular show, enough to warrant its own thread.

Now, that said, who caught the pilot last night? If so, what did you think? I really enjoyed the flow of the writing for the episode. The cold open was very reminiscent of Bb's season 5 cold open with Walt eating at the Denny's in New Hampshire.

Anyone remember this quote from the second-to-last episode of Bb? "If I'm lucky," Saul says, "in a month from now, best-case scenario, I'm managing a Cinnabon in Omaha."

Any who, episode 2 is going to be aired tonight as well, so looking forward to that.

PS. TUCO!!

There is absolutely no way that breaking bad was the greatest show ever made. None. I'm going to make this my crusade.

People fell in love with the final two seasons which were incredibly well done, and completely gloss over several years of Aaron Paul whining like a little **** for 12 straight episodes, mixed in with constant bickering and fighting with Heisenberg. It was lazy and redundant.

I semi-agree.  I watched the whole series on Netflix after the fact and there was a point in late season 2 through most of season 3 when I stopped watching for a few days and even would sometimes just leave it on and do other stuff around the house, so I had the general gist of what was going on.

Once Season 4 got started, I was on the couch watching again.

Yea, really enjoyed the episode. Looking forward to tonight...supposed to be an action packed episode.

So the beginning of the episode....is that Saul after BB? Would think so right?

Yes, read my OP:

There is huge potential there.  It should be a fun ride.  Jimmy McGill is barely scraping by.  We know he ends up in Omaha.  Let's fill in all that in-between.  It's interesting to seem him at rock bottom, knowing (from BB) that he's in for a wild roller coaster of a career..  "Slippin' Jimmy."  Ha.

I wonder if suburbanite Tuco is anywhere near as bat **** crazy as snorting-meth-off-a-knife Tuco?  And will we see his bell-ringing uncle?

And Zoony, you can absolutely make a pretty strong argument for Breaking Bad as greatest ever.  It is definitely in the conversation.  For me, it absolutely is the greatest drama I've ever watched.

And I can even agree with you that they somewhat overplayed Jesse Pinkman's anguish in the middle of the series.  But think about this.  That flaw may be exacerbated by binge watching.  Normal watching of the series, one episode a week apart, and it would not seem quite so overdone.

But I disagree that ANYTHING in the series was "lazy and redundant."

Episode 1 has all the makings of another great Gilligan product but it feels like another season of BB so far. (No complaints, as I'm a HUGE fan of BB).

I'm hoping for a dark comedy and so far I like it. Saul was best in small doses which is why his character worked so well on BB. I'm very curious to see how this plays out.

Only complaint i have is why does this need to be on at 10? Pretty damn late to stay up to watch a show on Monday night. Wish they would move it to 9

In all likelihood it has to do with competing with the major networks because that 9 PM Monday slot is like the some of the most prime real estate when it comes to the TV show slots. I'm sure the folks at AMC have an implementation strategy with the show and how they want to release it.

It's also likely that they normal air time will be changed and changed again over the course of the show.

I guess, but AMC has not been shy with their shows. The Walking Dead has out rated Sunday night football multiple times.

A nice little cinematic touch toward the end of the opening sequence - that bleak Omaha flash forward filmed in all black and white.  Back home in his apartment, he flips channels aimlessly, then goes to the closet for the VHS of his old Better Call Saul TV ads.  He pops the tape in and watches.  Everything is still black and white - except now there's a tiny bit of color - the ads reflecting off of his eyeglasses. Kind of a visual metaphor for how his life used to be.

I look forward to little touches like that in this series, just as there were in Breaking Bad.

I loved it.  Wife never watched all of Breaking Bad, she did near the end when I was watching it, enough to get the show, but she won't/doesn't know the characters outside of Walt, Jesse, Hank, Hanks wife and possibly a couple of others.

She watched the season premier last night (well half of it and fell asleep) and she loved it.  She told me not to delete it.  I'm definitely interested in watching all of it pan out.  How he hooks up and gets into business with Mike, Tuco, etc.

Having just rewatched these seasons with the wife, I disagree. There's so much more going on to savor outside of the Jesse moping. His low point was in season 5 anyway, where he basically went comatose for a while.

Haven't watched BCS yet, but looking forward to it. BB was a force to be reckoned with.
