It's a breath of fresh air to have TE's that want to block after suffering thru feeble attempts by Reid and Davis.  Used to drive me nuts that Gruden insisted on keeping them in tight.  He deserved to get fired for not recognizing that neither player had any desire whatsoever to block.  Dunno how many times Davis especially would let a defender cross face untouched into the backfield.

If AG can stay healthy our rushing production should trend way up.

Remember Pernell McPhee ?

We had him for one year, and it was quite ueventful. But apparently he managed to win a starting job on the Ravens, I noticed.

I also wonder, if we would have been better off keeping KPL, at least as a backup.

Was he and SDH really that bad, that they couldn't be backups on this team ?

I sure hope they have someone better in their sights.

I agree Kevin Pierre Louis would be a good backup on this team but he decided to sign elsewhere so we brought in Mayo and Norris who looked old and slow against the Ravens. SDH just couldn’t stay healthy. Wondering what’s he doing these days.

Im sure we will bring in a lb or two who has some game experience to serve as backups. Cross our fingers that no one gets hurt for the season.

McKinney is an interesting fit here for sure as we don’t have a real thumper at LB.  Would have to use him wisely, but as our DL isn’t focused on occupying blockers, a guy that can get off blocks and play downhill could be a big help.  Force more passing downs and let our pass rushers get after it.

This team woefully mismanaged the linebacker situation. Again.

I like Jamin. So I’m not going to be too aggressive here. But this team has consistently missed at LB.

Which is crazy given the pedigrees of Rivera and Del Rio. Is it arrogance that they can do more with less??

I mentioned Toney in another thread, as a possible dual player, to backup LB.

How about another dual player, who was already talked about all offseason about moving to LB : Landon Collins ?

Could we be saving a roster spot, by considering him an emergency backup at LB ?

I think when we’re in nickel that Collins assume the Mike responsibility but 10 yds off the line. If it’s a draw on 3rd & long or a keeper, he’s got to be the one getting to the runner. That’s my only reasoning why they don’t have a thumper Mike in the London Fletcher mold. So on run downs, Jamin stays in tight with Collins as the guy who picks up the shallow middle. Obviously depends on the offensive set and personnel, too.

Do a lot of teams carry three quarterbacks on their 53 man roster? I don’t see why we can’t place Kyle Allen on the practice roster and sign an additional linebacker?

I don’t think the issue was not having the ability to keep more than 4 linebackers. It was having more than 4 linebackers worth keeping.

Take Rocky McIntosh's name out of your mouth!

Seriously, it's crazy how we've missed at this position.  It has been a weakness for a long time.  The last good to very good group we had was M. Washington/London Fletcher back when two G Greg was our coordinator...

Mayb e the force has returned to Luke and he wants to play again. That would be amazing.

The Vikings cut Everson Griffin. He'd make a nice rotation with Chase and Sweat. Might as well go all in on that line if we won't be using LBers.

and he called Kurt Cousins a bum, which is pretty funny.

Jamin will be our primary coverage LB. He is well equipped to develop in that role. For our reserve/ backup LB, I'd like someone to help solidify our run defense and help get us to more 3rd and longs. You're likely only going to get a specialist this late in the process so a run support guy would be my vote.

One of the biggest preseason mysteries is that Jamin has almost exclusively played in 3 LB defenses. In nickel and packages with 2 LBers it’s mostly been Boston and Holcomb. Which seems to be a complete 180 from what we expected when drafting him and your statement. We’ll see soon enough but it’s been a bit confusing how we’ve chosen to deploy Davis so far.

And I’ll echo what KDawg has said. My mind is kind of blown at how we all know LB was a massive problem last year and Ron said as much too. As of this moment, we invested in a raw 1st rounder there, asked him to play a LB role that is probably the biggest adjustment for him, he doesn’t seem ready to play at a 1st round level yet and outside of him we signed a few cuttable castoff types that has resulted in our LB depth somehow looking worse than last year.

My mind is kinda blown at this so I’ll try to be optimistic about a few things. Holcomb showed continuous growth as a rookie and last year and by all accounts is still on that path. He’s not an all-star but seems to be growing into a solid starting level three down backer. He’s also been a durable player as has Bostic. For the love of Tanya Snyder, can people finally stop with the Collins at LBer talk? The dude DROPPED weight, has admitted he didn’t buy in at first and struggled last year, but is all in now and looks back to being an absolute friggen missile at SS which would be huge for us. IF we are going to be a mostly 2LBer defense with extra secondary players that provide quality near the LOS (Collins/Curl) then I think that minimizes the hole we left ourselves in once again at LBer and is a reason for less depth and attention there.

That being said, I’m still pretty down about our lack of effort this offseason to address the position group (zero outside of Davis) because we REALLY need a starting quality guy that plays downhill and can punish RB’s through the Dline. We knew this and so far it seems still are completely devoid of that player.

So it's basically pick three of these guys to cut to round out the roster (for now):

WR/PR DeAndre Carter

LB Jared Norris

LB David Mayo

DL Shaka Toney

DL Casey Toohill

DL David Bada

TE Ricky Seals-Jones

CB Darryl Roberts

I vote that we all designate Shaka Toney's new nickname: Shaka Khan! And anyone who gets this joke is over 40.  Reveal yourselves!

I mentioned Seals-Jones when I watched camp.  I wasn't blow away by him but he looked fluid for a big guy.   Having said that, he still could be gone with more roster shuffiling.

I am a fan of Reyes but agree he's not ready yet.

The TE that has impressed me most is Bates’ development. I did not like the pick at all but he must’ve taken well to coaching as he is making fine blocks - both from an assignment AND technique point of view. He looks like a vet. He has handled Defensive Ends surprisingly well when cross blocking or in-line.  Seems to eat up Linebackers. I don’t think he’ll ever be an elite pass catcher but looks like a very reliable #2 TE.

Part of the issue at LB is if you take a look at the FA class, it was quite weak, especially after Milano and David ended up resigning with their teams. I was hoping we would bring in Erin Wilson or Nicholas Morrow for depth but they couldn't hit there.

KJ Wright is not coming here and he frankly is not a fit. McKinney is a better version of Bostic and sends Bostic to the bench, where he belongs.

Im all for Paterson to get some playing time but I think he would be safe on the PS.

I would take a hard look at bringing in Wayne Gallman or Josh Adams both got cut today.

I floated a similar idea. Hold on to Patterson for a week when other teams’ rosters become 99.99% set; release Patrerson and sign a proven vet, but better than Barber which shouldn't be too hard. Then sign Patterson to the PS.

i doubt that happens, though. A couple things I like about Patterson is his height. There’s been some camera angles from the backfield that show him literally running below the feeble arm tackles of defenders who are occupied with a lineman. It’s pretty cool how Patterson just ducks under and gets 4 yards when a back who’s 5’11 or more would have that defenders reach grab his chest.

i also love how Patterson cuts on grass like it’s artificial turf. Defenders just barely get an arm on him at the line. But when the blocking isn't good and he gets tackled, I cringe sometimes as he gets pile driven. Frightening.
