Im all for Paterson to get some playing time but I think he would be safe on the PS.

I would take a hard look at bringing in Wayne Gallman or Josh Adams both got cut today.

Hard no for me.  Both of those guys have proven they are JAGs, let's give JP a shot.

He is far and away better than the guys we just let go.

Huge upgrade for us.

It's pretty clear that's the role they see for Jamin Davis. That's basically all he ever played.

Davis isn't ready

Two linebackers is going to be the base defense, whether it’s four down or five.

Yepper.

I think we will add a 5th lb, maybe after week 1, but it will be a guy we had during TC.  they might just want to see how waivers shake out and see if they can upgrade there, knowing they have a few guys they can bring back if an upgrade doesn't present itself.  Norris/kunaczyk?/mayo etc aren't all getting claimed, and they are all pretty comparable JAGs.

I think I understand what you’re saying: If there’s a vet they like that’s a significant upgrade, they’ll sign him as a 5th LB before week 1; otherwise they’ll sign a LB from TC. Right?  I would think they’d better look real soon though if they want a vet to absorb the playbook before game 1.

Yes, my bad, wasn't very clear.  I think they would like to upgrade that 5th lb spot, but knowing that winning a claim / signing a vet is far from a sure thing, they will probably resort to bringing back someone we already had.  Assuming they don't acquire someone from the outside in the next couple days, they may go into week 1 with only 4 lbs, and then add in the 5th lb soon after that once players start getting dinged up (or once they realize DeAndre Carter isn't worth the roster spot. Sorry, couldn't resist.)

if Jarrett Patterson isn't too short to play RB in this league, then why do they consider my little firecracker, Nico Marley, to be too short to play LB for a team of LB's like ours ???

IMHO, coverage of backs out in the flat & TE's.  Length and speed are necessary for LB's in today's NFL.  It's a passing league and coverage is a key component now. Just my opinion.

Yeah a short RB and a short LB are two totally different scenarios. With a short RB it can actually make him a bit harder to bring down at times with a low center of gravity. With a LB it basically just means you have a guy to pick on in the pass game as any situation where he has to cover a TE would be a ludicrous mismatch.

I don’t know anything about McKinney, but a quick google search says he is Miss ST alum like KJ, but 4 years his junior. What are peoples take on McKinney’s strengths and limitations?

Ditto for KJ. Does KJ have any speed? Why is he at home? Is it just a mileage thing for him?

We need additional speed at the backer position IMO.

I put this on the training camp thread, guess it goes here too

granted though years back

If I recall, Bernardrick is an old school 1990s style linebacker. Elite run stopper who can't defend the pass. Kind of a rich man's Mason Foster. As a backup, he's fine

Found a YouTube clip after I inquired. Definitely a downhill guy from what I saw. Don’t see him helping the passing D at all, however.

Jamin will be our primary coverage LB. He is well equipped to develop in that role. For our reserve/ backup LB, I'd like someone to help solidify our run defense and help get us to more 3rd and longs. You're likely only going to get a specialist this late in the process so a run support guy would be my vote.

While I haven't studied gobs of film, from what I can see, McKinney is very strong, decisive, sheds blocks powerfully, takes good angles, and tackles well. I wouldn't have him cover anyone with terrific speed (i.e. Kyle Pitts), but he can stick with the average tight end.

I mentioned Toney in another thread, as a possible dual player, to backup LB.

Reminds me of fan visions of another dual player, who was already talked about all offseason about moving to LB : Landon Collins

Maybe if the situation is right, those fans get their wish

John Bates loves to block.

And he's real good at it.

He reminds me of another John ; John Riggins. Bates makes a really nice play, and just hands the ball to the ref, like he's made a million great plays before

He has a great future here

It's a breath of fresh air to have TE's that want to block after suffering thru feeble attempts by Reid and Davis.  Used to drive me nuts that Gruden insisted on keeping them in tight.  He deserved to get fired for not recognizing that neither player had any desire whatsoever to block.  Dunno how many times Davis especially would let a defender cross face untouched into the backfield.
